June 23, 2020,
Today is the day you decided to purchase curtains. Yes, those over there do look very nice.
We suggest not to purchase them, attractive though they may be. Why?
They are a little too dark for your window.
Your window is one of opportunity and you need to keep it bright and uncovered as possible.
While it is still open. And it still is.
Currently there is much gloom and doom due to the deadly global pandemic. Businesses are closing, industries are shutting down, schools are closed and societies around the world are crippled.
As reported by cnbc.com, “The new coronavirus outbreak and subsequent shutdown of huge swathes of China could impact more than 5 million businesses worldwide, according to a new study. A special briefing issued by global data analytics firm Dun & Bradstreet analyzed the Chinese provinces most impacted by the virus, and found they are intricately linked to the global business network.”
Adding to the bleak report, the global news leader cnn.com, “Global airlines stand to lose $113 billion in sales if the coronavirus continues to spread, according to the International Air Transport Association.”
No industry, once thought invincible, appears to be immune.
The Los Angeles Times shared, “ESPN’s lack of live games is projected to lead to a ratings decline of as much as 80% and compound the problems for Disney, which has been reeling on multiple fronts due to the pandemic. Disney’s theme parks are closed around the world, and its cruise ships are stuck in harbors. Movie theater closures have erased another big source of revenue for the company because Walt Disney Studios relies heavily on its box office blockbusters.”
Previously we could never imagine a NBA season being canceled but due to the pandemic, we certainly are in unprecedented times. As reported by nbcsports.com, “For the NBA and its teams, financial losses will be front of mind. In a recent article, NBC Sports NBA Insider Tom Haberstroh estimated that nearly $500 million could be lost in ticket revenue without fans in attendance for the final stretch of the season.”
Yet amid the very real dire virus related cloud, new windows of opportunities are opening.
It just depends upon your industry.
While some windows for many businesses and industries are closing, hopefully not shut, other industries are seeing record profits.
Straight from their news room, Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, the world’s leading provider of diagnostic information services, announced today financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2019.
- Record fourth quarter revenues of $1.93 billion, up 4.8% versus 2018
- Record full year revenues of $7.73 billion, up 2.6% from 2018
- Record full year cash provided by operations of $1.24 billion, up 3.6% from 2018
Quest Diagnostics is an American clinical laboratory. A Fortune 500 company, Quest operates in the United States, (including Puerto Rico), United Kingdom, Mexico, and Brazil. Quest also maintains collaborative agreements with various hospitals and clinics across the globe.
As of 2017 the company had approximately 45,000 employees, and generated more than $7.7 billion in revenue.
The company offers access to diagnostic testing services for cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, neurological disorders and employment and court ordered drug testing.
In the goods and services sector theguardian.com posted, “The online retailer Amazon has been described as a “clear winner” from the coronavirus crisis, its share price surging by more than a third inside a month, its customers spending almost $11,000 a second on its products and services, and its owner, Jeff Bezos, reinforcing his position as the world’s richest person with a fortune of $138bn.”
Clearly their window of opportunity for increased profits surged as doors closed shut in other financial sectors due to the global pandemic.
They also add that while most businesses have been hit hard by the impact of the pandemic and the looming recession, shares in Amazon have risen to a record high as hundreds of millions people stuck in lockdown conditions turn to the delivery giant to keep them fed and entertained.
Most of us in sheltering in mode understand that all too well.
If you go to the supermarket or retail store and what you seek is out of stock, there are little to no other options except to order the product online.
Even trying to reach there but public transportation, you are all alone.
Recently a friend in our circle went to a giant retailer to purchase a Cam Camera so they could Skype with a relative and the store was out and the sales clerk related how due to the Coronavirus outbreak she doesn’t expect that they will be receiving Cams for at least another month.
Amazon, here our friend comes.
USA Today educates, “Logitech, the company that dominates webcam sales, is sold out of every one it makes. Amazon and Best Buy are out of stock. And price gougers on eBay are selling used models for as high as $420, or more than twice as much as the most expensive Logitech model, the $199 Brio.”
Ouch. Amazon is sold out too?
We tried calling Walmart, Target, Office Depot and other retailers and we received the same response. They are all out.
The informative team at theverge.com echoes the sentiments, “Most laptops come with a built-in webcam, but if you’re working at home from a desktop or maybe just looking to touch up the mediocre quality of whatever camera you’re stuck with, external webcams are still a crucial accessory. But with so many people now firmly settled into work-from-home life, they’ve become nearly impossible to find. NPD Group reported a 179 percent jump in sales for webcams over the first three weeks of March as consumers settled into quarantine.”
Talk about a window of opportunity that opened up for the webcam business.
In the elite high school sports world where we are from, there was always the understanding that no matter how tough a defense you are facing, when they are effectively taking one thing away from you, they are absolutely vulnerable to something else.
In our personal lives as we navigate through this global pandemic crisis, for so many, many doors have shut and closed but as we have seen above with a few examples, for others incredible windows have opened.
This can be the same for you as an individual as well.
The coronavirus has a blanketing defense, but it unknowingly has opened up windows of opportunity for us as well.
We have to keep analyzing.
Seeking. Surmising.
A great window of opportunity is opening in front of us.
We have to keep our eyes open to find it. Leave the windows open. Keep the spacing free and clear.
Choose the bright curtains.
