The epitome of an ambitious woman, Amanda Coetzer entered the top-20 on the women’s world rankings in 1992 and remained there for most of the next 10 years. She developed a reputation for regularly beating players who were higher ranked than her as she climbed to her career high ranking of World No. 3 in 1997. As a result of her many upset wins and her small size, she earned the nickname “The Little Assassin.”
It’s inspiring to see someone who is not the largest, wealthiest, strongest or brimmed with so many of life’s advantages not use that as an excuse and accomplish extraordinary goals anyway.
DWW was filled with girls next door who were not natural fighters but studied the craft and became enjoyable wrestlers to watch.
The very substance of the ambitious is merely the shadow of a dream.…William Shakespeare
Monika T. was one of them.
Described by many as a Model; adorned with beautiful soft brown hair, magical eyes and a glowing smile, Monika was a girl that dreams were made of, on and off the court. Though very new to the game and staying for a short time, she fought hard enough to ensure that time would remember her.
Here are what some of her critics and admirers had to say.
Monika (right)
Monika vs Delores: “This is definitely a collector’s item for those of you who want the girls unskilled but aggressive. Both girls do not know much about wrestling, both girls aren’t very strong either, but they’re both pretty girls, well built and they do one thing all of us do love and appreciate: They wrestle emotionally and they want to win. Lots of falls here, one of the best matches ever filmed for fans of novices.”
Her match against sexy Silvia. “Many fans like watching not just good, strong wrestlers but novices going at it for the first time. Here they are! Three gorgeous, slim, fit teenagers, who don’t know each other, taking each other on in the first wrestling matches of their lives. As different as they are, they have one thing in common – all want to find out what it’s like to fight another girl and try to win.
Who wins? Tiny, blonde, upper class cutie Silvia – a great squash player, street gang member Dolores – who relishes dishing out schoolgirl pin humiliation or dreamy, slim brunette model Monika?”
With a 5ft 6 inch frame and weighing only 105 lbs., slender is an appropriate description and that’s what made her desire and fire to compete so admirable.
I’m an entrepreneur. ‘Ambitious’ is my middle name.……Kim Kardashian
We can often turn to film for comparisons and inspiration and one that speaks well to disadvantaged women fueled with ambition that propels them to great heights is Clint Eastwood’s captivating Million Dollar Baby.
The film is about an under appreciated boxing trainer, the mistakes that haunt him from his past, and his quest for atonement by helping an underdog amateur boxer achieve her dream of becoming a professional.
The eternally penetrating and thought provoking movie reviewer Roger Ebert takes us inside. “Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby” is a masterpiece, pure and simple, deep and true. It tells the story of an aging fight trainer and a hillbilly girl who thinks she can be a boxer. It is narrated by a former boxer who is the trainer’s best friend. But it’s not a boxing movie. It is a movie about a boxer. What else it is, all it is, how deep it goes, what emotional power it contains, I cannot suggest in this review, because I will not spoil the experience of following this story into the deepest secrets of life and death. This is the best film of the year.
It is a dark picture overall: a lot of shadows, many night scenes, characters who seem to recede into private fates. It is a “boxing movie” in the sense that it follows Maggie’s career and has several fight scenes. She wins from the beginning, but that’s not the point; “Million Dollar Baby” is about a woman determined to make something of herself, and a man who doesn’t want to do anything for this woman, and will finally do everything.”
That is what the power of ambition can do for you and the effect that it can have on those around you.
What makes Monika’s matches so enjoyable are found in the words that describe her ranging from amateur, to novice to even unskilled.
The last one is debatable.
At Femcompetitor we love to see everyday women take risks and put themselves out there, even if temporarily to find out both mentally and physically how far they can go.
It certainly earned the ambitious Amanda Coetzer worldwide praise and glowing reports from her countrymen at southafrica.info. “South African tennis star Amanda Coetzer epitomized the saying: “Dynamite comes in small packages”. She stands only 1.58 meters tall, but her heart was one of the biggest on the WTA Tour, and her never-say-die attitude reaped big rewards in a career that began back in 1988 and lasted 16 years.
In an age when top tennis players became bigger and stronger and relied increasingly on the power game, Coetzer was a throwback to the glory days ruled by players like Billie Jean King, Chris Evert-Lloyd, Martina Navratilova and Tracy Austin.
Coetzer stands only 1.58 meters (5 feet 2 inches) tall, but she was all heart, known for being super-fit, for being a tenacious fighter, for chasing down every ball, and for giving the game her all.”
I am overly ambitious, because I realize it can be done.……..Pharrell Williams
Her many fans enjoyed watching Monika grace the mats near the mighty Danube River. She never let her lack of experience deter her from giving it her all.
Her ambition certainly made an impression on so many.
