May 21, 2024,
There are as many philosophies about the path you should take as well as quotes that speak to them.
It can be one of the trickiest aspects of life to figure out but an extremely important one.
Especially when you are young.
If you are young and inexperienced, not sure which path to take, sometimes the temptation is to listen to someone older. Perhaps read an ancient book, to learn. In our opinion?
That is okay as long as you’re just getting information and have not made a decision to follow the pathway they suggest. Why?
That’s how cults are formed.
In our experience, there is another massive factor to consider.
Why are they suggesting this to you?
What if, they come across as benevolent but internally are extremely selfish?
When it comes to deciding which pathways to follow, you have to be patient and be very careful.
Otherwise, you can have your youth used up, and when they are done with you or see less benefit in you, they will most likely throw you away.
Over the years, we’ve come to really admire Buddha. Why? In part, because he doesn’t seem to wear out the carpet asking or requiring that we become his follower, servant or slave. When someone or some book does that, be very wary.
Regarding pathways, he is once quoted as expressing, “No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”
We say this based upon experience.
Which brings us to the hope and the why.
Whatever pathway you choose, what is motivating you to do so.
Is it fame?
Money?
Attention from those you are romantically attracted to?
Spirituality?
Pleasing your parents or community?
Happiness?
We really like the last one. Following a pathway that will make you happy is hard to argue with, yet so hard to know. Especially when you are young.
Let’s get a second opinion on happiness.
Time to travel to the bookstore.
Happiness Is the Way: How to Reframe Your Thinking and Work with What You Already Have to Live the Life of Your Dreams Paperback – November 3, 2020
By Dr. Wayne W. Dyer (Author)
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
This was something Dr. Wayne Dyer said often, and it was the inspiration for this book. The material contained within is taken from speeches and presentations he gave to many varied audiences, over many years. Yet it seemed that no matter who he talked to, he returned to a few themes over and over again, and these themes are woven throughout the pages of Happiness Is the Way.
As Wayne will show you, there is no magic potion for getting what you want from life. All you could ever want or need can be found inside of you–you simply need to learn to reframe your thinking. No matter what your present circumstances are, you have the power to overcome them.
This book will show you the impact of your attitudes, choices, and expectations, leading you to a great sense of empowerment; help you recognize how you are likely much more successful than you ever realized, regardless of the challenges you may be facing; and illuminate the importance of a personal mission. It also includes specific questions and journal exercises to help you chart the way to the life you’ve dreamed of. In the process, you’ll discover that you contain the seeds for greatness within, leading you to a life of true happiness.”
Appears to be sound thinking.
Ready for a movie?
Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 American comedy-drama film directed by Jon Avnet and based on Fannie Flagg‘s 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.
Written by Flagg and Carol Sobieski, and starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker and Cicely Tyson, the film tells the story of a middle-aged housewife who, unhappy with her life, befriends an elderly lady in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know.
The film was released in theaters in the United States on December 27, 1991, garnered positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing $119.4 million on an $11 million budget.
Fried Green Tomatoes received nominations for two Academy Awards and two BAFTA awards, as well as nominations for three Golden Globe Awards and a Guldbagge Award.
The team at collider.com express, “As the two form a fast friendship, Mrs. Threadgoode recounts the tales of two southern women from her past and how they overcame life’s complications in 1920s Alabama. Each leading character must find her new path through the trials and tribulations of her story.”
Must see movie viewing.
As you can see, we left one major pathway off the list.
Overcoming challenges.
Why finding the right pathway is so important for us is because it is very personal.
We have an associate who was at an intersection.
He was young and naïve and wanted to serve God.
His options at the time were to pursue a Master’s Degree, teach English in a foreign country or become more involved in the evangelical work.
Which pathway would be best for him?
He chose the Bible based one.
For him, it later became the worst decision he ever made in his life.
It lead him to picking a horrible but stable job that allowed him to fulfill his responsibilities as a leader and family man.
One decision led to another and his life became more miserable.
Ultimately he turned into a person most people didn’t like and one he didn’t like either.
Going down that pathway destroyed his life.
What was his mistake? He chose a life he felt God wanted for him as opposed to choosing one that he wanted for himself. The problem is, he never met God, so in reality, it is possible he was simply following the direction of religious corporate men.
Try and learn from that real life experience.
When you are standing in that intersection, with choices and options as to which pathway to choose, our associate would suggest, choose the one that you want. Not one that you think others want for you.
Whatever pathway you choose?
It will change you for better or worse. It is not a neutral decision.
Life is very short.
Walk a pathway that you are confident will change you into the epitome of the person that you desire to be.
