Of the movie.
In recent times, there have been some fantastic female driven TV series and Movies.
We’ve watched, enjoyed them immensely and thought we would share some of them with you.
Elizabeth Holmes captivated the tech industry and the world at large with her promises of a medical innovation in disease detection.
It is a story that has been in the news for some time and the series The Dropout depicted in captivating fashion.
The Dropout is an American biographical crime drama miniseries created by Elizabeth Meriwether, based on the podcast of the same name hosted by Rebecca Jarvis and produced by ABC News.
The series documents the disgraced biotechnology company Theranos and its founder Elizabeth Holmes, played by Amanda Seyfried.
It is the first television production to be produced by Searchlight Television.
The Dropout premiered on the streaming service Hulu on March 3, 2022.
It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the writing and the performances of the cast.
We completely agree.
The series was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Seyfried, winning the latter.
What intrigued us about the series the most was the way it gave us an insight into how Elizabeth was raised and how one family could be involved with two of the most publicized scandals in recent times, her father, a then Vice President, working previously working for Enron.
What are the odds?
Enron Corporation was an American energy, commodities, and services company based in Houston, Texas.
Before its bankruptcy on December 2, 2001, Enron employed approximately 20,600 staff and was a major electricity, natural gas, communications, and pulp and paper company, with claimed revenues of nearly $101 billion during 2000.
How well were things going?
Fortune Magazine named Enron “America’s Most Innovative Company” for six consecutive years.
Then the bottom fell out.
At the end of 2001, it was revealed that Enron’s reported financial condition was sustained by an institutionalized, systematic, and creatively planned accounting fraud, known since as the Enron scandal. Enron has become synonymous with willful corporate fraud and corruption.
What struck us at the time was how so many employees lost their life savings and retirement by investing in their own company.
You would think Elizabeth would want nothing to do with fraudulent behavior, given how her family was affected.
The series was also a very insightful depiction into a culture of fear and constant suspicion at Theranos.
We’re confident you will enjoy this one.
The next one stars Aubrey Plaza in the film Emily The Criminal.
It is not publicized as being based upon a true story but it sure feels like one.
This movie is brilliant.
Emily the Criminal is a 2022 American crime thriller film written and directed by John Patton Ford in his feature film debut.
It received generally positive reviews from critics for its social commentary and Aubrey Plaza’s performance.
Here is the storyline.
Emily lives in Los Angeles and is deeply in debt. She struggles to pay off her student loans, largely because a felony conviction prevents her from obtaining a well-paying job.
The opening scene, where she is being interviewed for a medical related job, is priceless.
Didn’t work out.
Consequently, she delivers food as an “independent contractor” for a catering company.
Sounds like she could get fired at any time and has no medical benefits.
A co-worker connects Emily to a “dummy shopper” service that promises to make her $200 in one hour.
The service is revealed to be a credit card fraud ring, and Emily meets Youcef, one of its organizers, who instructs her to purchase a flat-screen TV using a fake card and ID. The next day, Emily is sent on a larger job (purchasing a car on a no-limit credit card) which goes poorly after the dealer discovers the scam, leading to a physical altercation.
A bloody nose for Emily.
In Emily’s life, symbolically speaking, it wasn’t the first and it will absolutely not be the last.
She is a criminal but it is so easy to relate to her.
Root for her.
When people in superior positions, who want to take advantage of her and other people in desperate situations (Emily has over 60,000 in student loan debt) feed her a line of bull, she calls them out in no uncertain terms.
Many life lessons here about not being a victim, even if you are one.
One more.
The Good Nurse is a 2022 American drama film, starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, about Amy Loughren, a night nurse, who suspects that her co-worker is the serial killer Charles Cullen.
The film is based on the 2013 true-crime book of the same name by Charles Graeber. It is directed by Tobias Lindholm and written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise towards to Chastain and Redmayne’s performance.
Here is the storyline.
In 2003, Amy Loughren is a single mother and nurse working in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Parkfield Memorial Hospital in New Jersey, who is suffering from cardiomyopathy.
Due to having no health insurance, Amy has no other choice than to remain working for another four months, in order to acquire the insurance to afford a heart transplant.
The hospital recruits experienced nurse Charles Cullen to help her work the night shifts, and they quickly become good friends. Charlie discovers her condition and empathetically agrees to keep it a secret.
Now for the rub.
When an elderly patient named Ana Martinez, who was being looked after by Amy and Charlie, suddenly dies, the hospital’s administrative board contacts the state police.
Meanwhile, after Kelly Anderson, another ICU patient suffers a seizure and inexplicably dies, Amy discovers insulin had also been administered to her the night before. Suspicious, she contacts an old friend, Lori, a fellow nurse who worked with Charlie at a different hospital.
Lori reveals that, during Charlie’s employment, the ward he was assigned to dealt with numerous sudden deaths, with the discovery of insulin in several of them. Shocked, Amy raids Parkfield’s storage, discovering holes in several IV bags, indicating they had been contaminated.
Eventually, to her dismay, she discovers it is indeed Charlie behind the murders.
Jessica Chastain gives an incredibly believable and moving performance.
It makes the film seem all too real.
Some history.
After making her film debut at age 31 in the drama Jolene (2008), Ms. Chastain had her breakthrough in 2011 with six film releases, including the dramas Take Shelter (2011) and The Tree of Life (2011).
She received Academy Award nominations for playing an aspiring socialite in the period drama The Help (2011) and a CIA analyst in the thriller Zero Dark Thirty (2012). Her biggest commercial successes came with the science fiction films Interstellar (2014) and The Martian (2015), and the horror film It Chapter Two (2019).
She continued to receive critical acclaim for playing strong-willed women in the dramas that we watched and were impressed by including A Most Violent Year (2014), Miss Sloane (2016), and Molly’s Game (2017), and the television miniseries Scenes from a Marriage (2021).
Drum roll please.
For her portrayal of Tammy Faye in the biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021), which she also produced, Jessica won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
This is a great time in history for talented actresses to make a name for themselves and help our television and movie experience really come to life.
The three above films speak to that in a very powerful way.
