March 31, 2021,
Euphoria. Yes, spelled with a capital E.
This has to be it. We’re feeling it. Right now. This moment. This magic moment.
The spectacular legendary music group Jay and the Americans told us so in song:
This magic moment
So different and so new
Was like any other
Until I kissed you
And then it happened
It took me by surprise
I knew that you felt it too
By the look in your eyes
We can feel the magic.
Cheryl felt it too.
Was it too good to be true? Sure felt like it.
Had Cheryl had some bad times in her past?
How can we name the ways?
Her primary family neglected her. That sounds like a cliché but when we heard the details, they actually did.
She was so despondent in high school that for two years she didn’t even take year book pictures.
We could go on but we think you get the point.
What did intrigue us the most about Cheryl’s story was how myriads, no make that legions of people, brought bad things into her life.
She failed enough on her own but many relatives, so called friends and lovers helped dig her grave. It was weird. She truly did have a lot of people do really bad things to her. A very high percentage.
Ultimately though, who made all of that possible?
That’s right, Cheryl did.
She had to change and she did.
She has successfully eliminated all of the lousy personality profiles of her past and, as she was relaxing on a Thursday night, watching Liv mother and smother her adopted son Noah on Law and Order Special Victims Unit, she quietly thought to herself, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Especially if you enjoy watching Liv trying to be the perfect mother.
What intrigued her most was how Cheryl was waiting for something bad to happen. A demoralizing message left on the answering machine. A letter of litigation in her P.O. Box. A knock on the door from someone she no longer wanted to see.
She waited.
And waited.
It didn’t happen. Instead Noah asked Liv a question that caught her off guard.
Nice.
It finally dawned on Cheryl that she no longer had to expect or wait for bad things to happen. Her behavior had changed and she took the responsibility to wrap up loose ends so those people were gone forever.
She had a chance to be happy.
If only she stopped looking back into the past.
“I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is.”…Alan Watts
That’s the key.
How many people who could be moderately happy in the present keep ruining the mood by continuing to look back into the past? Keep dredging up bad experiences. Keep pondering smoldering regrets. Keep asking herself, “why did she do that?”, when it came to disappointing behavior from incidents long gone.
Why indeed.
It is time for Cheryl to let it go.
Sure, many of us wished that we had lived a life closer to what we dreamed that it would be like and should be like after graduating from college, but it didn’t turn out that way.
So now that those chapters are closed, what new ones are you beginning to pen? It is up to you to write your future story. Yes life does surprise, but aside from that, isn’t much of what will happen in the present and future up to us?
“My future is in my past and my past is my present. I must now make the present my future.”… Vladimir Horowitz
Maybe you could use some suggestions as to how to do that.
From time to time we glide through Amazon and we came across this intriguing book that seems to speak to this very subject. Here it is:
How To Live In The Present Moment: (Kindle Edition)
by Morris, Matt and Dr. Shah Faisal Ahmad.
Here are some of their thoughts:
Past events haunt all of us and the future weighs heavy. Our what ifs, maybes, and not good enoughs paralyze us and prevent us from enjoying what we have right in front of us – the beauty of a sunset, accolades for a successful project, the smell of freshly baked bread, a good friend.
We accept our past as who we are, and yet, we would all like to break out of that mold and truly enjoy life for what it is. How To Live In The Present Moment, Version 2.0 will gently guide you through breaking the shackles of your debilitating thought patterns of the past and future and give you the tools to live in the Present Moment.
The methods described will lead you through the unknown jungle of self-doubt and I will show you how you can forgive yourself and those around you so that you can move on to become who you truly are NOW, not who you were yesterday. It discusses how you can meaningfully plan for your future without getting bogged down in trying to predict what might happen.
You’ll be guided down the path of self-discovery and celebrate the true and happy new you – the you who has been waiting patiently in the wings for you to discover how to live in the Present Moment and thus discover true happiness.
It is time to break out of your self-imposed jail sentence to experience freedom of your body and mind using the power of the Present Moment!”
Sounds like great advice.
We have learned to stay very focused on the present. It serves us well. Savor it.
“The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.”…Marcel Pagnol
Smell the coffee. Literally. Go ahead. Please smell it. Especially if it has caramel in it.
Go to the beach and watch the sun set. Try a restaurant that you previously have not. Go to Netflix and take a risk on a series in a genre you typically don’t. Walk down a different pathway in the park or forest near you.
Explore new things in the now.
View the present as a starting place as to where you want to go.
Right now.
