September 26, 2023,
Watching the recent 2023 US Open tennis tournament, it is filled with wonder, putting on display some of the highest self-motivators in the world.
Yes, they have coaches. True.
But on that court, especially on the world’s largest stage, the player has to rely upon self.
They have to be fully motivated.
Continually.
In life, certain fortunate and special opportunities come along. Rarely. But they will come along more often, to be fully taken advantage of, if you are constantly motivating yourself to achieve one goal after another.
You can pick the categories.
Your health.
Your money.
Your accomplishments and achievements.
By focusing on the above and being self-motivated, it will determine much of the type of life you have. To transition into having the lifestyle you want.
The life you’ve been dreaming of.
Let’s talk about Ralph.
When our associate was young, he paid for his own college education and was very motivated but wasn’t sure what future he wanted.
He was contacted by a nice mature woman who sold him on her international religion.
Unknown to him, it was a religion that very cleverly influenced him and others to give up their personal motivations and pursue the organization’s goals, to please the creator.
There were issues in his past, growing up in conflict with his parents, so he was searching for something. He thought he found it in that religion, that seemed to say all of the right things.
So, he bought in to it.
Most young people buy into something.
As a result, he put his own ambitions on hold. In fact he stopped pursing them. He took a job that gave him more time to get involved in the membership drives of his religion, did not focus on making a lot of money and was content to stay at a lower socio-economic level than his college education, if maximized, would have given him.
This went on for years, as he begin to accept a second or even third level lower lifestyle.
Others he went to college with were pursuing careers and making lots of money. They were achieving positions of power and control. They lived in nicer neighborhoods.
By the time he reached his thirties, he was embarrassed about the low self-esteem life that he chose. He knew, that when he was younger, he was capable of doing much more.
What made him realize that he had allowed himself to become a marginal person, ironically, was watching the US Open.
It was when the camera panned the audience.
It wasn’t just that many of the people were well-dressed and looked professional, he could also sense the lifestyles they lived.
He went to movies, picnics and camping.
On a budget.
They have nice seats at the US Open.
Probably NBA and NFL games as well.
Attend nice parties of influential people.
In short, they seemed to live a life he could have had, but because of not being motivated to make his personal life the best it could be, instead he promoted the interests of others, people in a corporate office that he never met.
What a huge mistake.
At some point, he realized his real life was lost.
What about you?
Especially if you are young?
Are you motivated to live your best life? Be an overachiever? Be admired and possibly envied by others?
It is okay, in an ethical way, to put your interests and needs first.
Life is about balance and you have to try and find it.
Ask yourself this question.
What is the life you truly want to live?
Once you find the answer to that question, pursue it with strong self-motivation.
And you know what?
It is okay to seek out a Life Coach.
Life coaching is the process of helping people identify and achieve personal goals through developing skills and attitudes that lead to self-empowerment.
Driven by self-motivation.
Life coaching generally deals with issues such as procrastination, fear of failure, relationships’ issues, lack of confidence, work–life balance and career changes, and often occurs outside the workplace setting.
That is important to remember.
Getting advice from or being coached by people in leadership positions in an organization, you have to ask yourself, whose best interests do they have in mind?
Most likely, theirs, not yours.
Their loyalty is to where their bread is getting buttered, most likely in the organization where they have a leadership position.
In Ralph’s case, he asked for and received lots of life advice from older people in the organization, who were sometimes well-meaning, but their loyalty was to the organization.
Not Ralph.
Seek advice from people who have a loyalty to you.
Especially a Life Coach or a therapist, who is being paid by you.
You might keep in mind one caution.
Some skeptics have criticized life coaching’s focus on self-improvement for its potential for commercializing friendships and other human relationships.
If you are paying someone, know that going in, while you want to keep good relations, an argument could be made that you are not friends. Don’t be naïve about that. You are looking for a professional to help you with self-motivation to help you pursue a life you desire.
One you deserve.
Let’s walk over to the bookstore for some coaching.
