June 19, 2023,
Time comes and goes. We don’t know where.
Generations emerge and pass away. Sadly so.
Sounds like a song.
The legendary Alan Parsons Project taught us so:
“Time, flowing like a river
Time, beckoning me
Who knows when
We shall meet again, if ever
But time keeps flowing
Like a river to the sea.”
Can’t stop the passage of time. Slow it down either. Wish we could.
So, that being the case, all most of us can do, is to enjoy what happens in between. Especially in a festive way. Birthdays, weddings, high school and family reunions, come to mind. Every generation tends to place a high value upon them.
We understand why.
Need some planning ideas? Theme ideas?
Why don’t we go to the movies?
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is a 1997 American comedy film directed by David Mirkin and starring Mira Sorvino, Lisa Kudrow, and Janeane Garofalo.
The plot revolves around two 28-year-old women who appear to have not achieved much success in life, and decide to invent fake careers to impress former classmates at their ten-year high school reunion.
The characters are taken from the stage play Ladies Room, which also featured Ms. Kudrow.
The film received positive reviews from critics and is considered a cult classic.
We completely agree.
Watching this movie brought back so many memories for us. As we age, those high school reunions become more and more important.
A little deeper into the storyline.
The two under achieving girls, Romy White and Michele Weinberger, live together in an apartment in Venice, Los Angeles, California.
Romy works as a cashier in the service department at a Jaguar dealership and Michele is unemployed.
Okay, very low achievement.
They are single, unambitious, and enjoy a casual lifestyle of slacking, mocking TV and movies, and elaborate amateur dressmaking.
While working, Romy encounters her former classmate from high school, Heather Mooney, once a rebellious, troubled girl who frequently smoked cigarettes in school, who is now a business woman, having invented the paper for a special type of cigarette.
We can hear the cash register ringing. Okay, so you don’t have to go to the best college to be successful. As we guessed, it is about who you are internally.
Heather informs Romy about their upcoming ten-year high school reunion in Tucson, Arizona.
Then the real fun begins.
You must watch this one.
Oh, by the way, the music was incredible. The dance scenes too.
Weddings are another important life pastime, depending upon your situation, that can make you feel depressed and left behind.
We know. Been there. Done that. Most important?
Deeply felt that.
Along with funerals (which we are going to avoid here), weddings are one of the most important markers of life. That being the case, try and have some fun with it.
Back to the movies.
Mamma Mia! is a 2008 jukebox musical romantic comedy film directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson, based on her book from the 1999 musical of the same name.
The film is based on the songs of pop group ABBA, with additional music composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson.
The film features an incredible ensemble cast, including Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård, Meryl Streep, and Julie Walters.
The plot follows a young bride-to-be who invites three men to her upcoming wedding, with the possibility that any of them could be her father.
What a premise.
By the way. Wasn’t DNA testing invented in 1986? Oh well.
The film grossed $611 million worldwide on a $52 million budget, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 2008. Obviously the DNA thing, wasn’t a thing.
Bravo. Standing ovation.
Here is the storyline.
On the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi, bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan reveals to her bridesmaids that she has secretly invited three men to her wedding without telling her mother, Donna.
They are the men with whom her mother had sex during the 25-day period that was coincident with Sophie’s conception.
Drum roll.
The men involved included Irish-American architect Sam Carmichael, Swedish travel writer Bill Anderson, and British banker Harry Bright. She hopes that her father will give her away and believes that after she spends time with them, she will know which one is her father.
This movie was a ton of fun. You are allowed to laugh, sing and dance.
Just don’t bring a DNA kit.
In this short life, we need a lot more fun.
Reunions are taken to the next level when they involve family.
Great food, music and laughter.
Madea’s Family Reunion is a 2006 American comedy-drama film and an adaptation of the stage production of the same name written by Tyler Perry.
It was written, directed by, and starring Perry with the rest of the cast consisting of Blair Underwood, Lynn Whitfield, Boris Kodjoe, Henry Simmons, Lisa Arrindell Anderson, Maya Angelou, Rochelle Aytes, Jenifer Lewis, Tangi Miller, Keke Palmer, and Cicely Tyson.
The film tells the story of Madea preparing for an upcoming family reunion while dealing with the dramas before and during it.
Trust us, in this one, there is a lot of drama. Just like in real families. Still, the humor is incredible.
So, what about you?
When was the last time you attended a friend or family member’s wedding? If you did, were you faced with looking at the one that got away? Was there pressure on you to tie the knot as well?
It does make you reflect.
Then there is the high school reunion.
Talk about reflecting.
There is nothing like a high school reunion to put a mirror up in front of you. In some ways, as you see your once young classmates aging, it reminds you of your own mortality. It also reminds you of a precious time period, once so real, that will never exist again.
There is nothing like family. Once, you were all children. Now all grown up. Cherish each and one of your family members. One day, as some of us have already found out the sad way, they will be gone.
Generations come and go.
We can’t stop time from passing.
Still, since we know ahead of time, the importance of the moment and the memories, make the most of the time in between with those you love. And by the way?
Have lots of fun doing so.
