Words are important.
Words have meaning.
Even if we don’t fully understand what they mean, especially when a wide variety of people use them in situations that seem insincere.
Empower.
Empowered.
Empowerment.
What do those words mean exactly?
The team at Psychology Today psychologytoday.com offers a suggestion, “What can I do to make my life better? (examples: be more flexible, question my assumptions, uphold my values—be fair, honest, compassionate).”
That is a starting place isn’t it?
Instead of looking for others to empower you, isn’t it better for you to take steps to empower yourself?
Now, for a little broader definition.
In terms of empowering, various dictionaries focus on making yourself or someone stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their own life.
We like that.
Time for an example. It will bring us great joy to tell you about this one.
Let’s go to the movies.
Joy is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film, written and directed by David O. Russell, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano, a self-made millionaire who created her own business empire.
The film received a theatrical release on December 25, 2015, distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Ms. Lawrence received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her performance. Joy was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, among other accolades.
Very impressive.
Now for the storyline.
In 1990, Joy Mangano, an airline booking agent residing in Peconic, New York, struggles financially while juggling a complicated family life.
Living with Joy and her two children are her single mother, Terri, who spends all day in bed watching soap operas, her maternal grandmother, Mimi, and her under-employed ex-husband, Tony, a wannabe singer who sleeps in the basement.
Joy’s overachieving paternal half-sister, Peggy, constantly humiliates her in front of her children for her failed marriage. Joy’s father, Rudy, further complicates matters when he also moves into the basement after his third divorce.
Ouch.
Mimi and Joy’s best friend, Jackie, encourage Joy to pursue her inventing ambitions.
Positive empowerment.
Frustrated when using a conventional mop, she designs and builds an innovative self-wringing type. Trudy, a wealthy Italian widow Rudy is dating, agrees to invest in Joy’s product. They contract a California company to manufacture the mop’s parts at a low price.
To avoid a potential patent lawsuit, the company advises Joy to pay $50,000 in royalties to a man in Hong Kong who has a similar product.
Joy meets QVC executive Neil Walker who agrees to sell her mops on TV. To manufacture 50,000 additional units, she takes out a second home mortgage.
Taking risks?
Big time.
Surely an important ingredient in empowering yourself. It is hard to take control of your life if you don’t take risks.
When the first TV attempt fails, after the celebrity pitchman improperly demonstrates the product, Joy demands she be allowed to do a second infomercial.
Taking risks.
Being persistent. Picking yourself back up after failure. What happens next?
The mop sells out, earning thousands of dollars.
And, so it goes.
Based upon that movie, another step in empowering yourself is to not take no for an answer, always have a Plan B and most important, don’t quit.
Are you starting to feel a little of the empowerment itch?
Good.
Let’s walk over to the bookstore.

In the second section of this book, the author uses her personal stories to provide examples of how to apply these principles to achieve any life goal as a woman.”
Good to know.
We always like to get a different perspective and a second opinion on a matter in discussion.
An additional element that stands out is the notion of thinking big. Let’s face it, if you are going to overcome hardships, learn from your mistakes and take risks, why do it for pennies?
Think big. Like owning a global mop company.
Everyone loves something.
Everyone should have a passion. Life is just too short.
Find yours.
Pursue it.
What we like about that is, you don’t have to rely upon others, some not sincere, to empower you.
Why let others do for you what you can do yourself? Empower yourself.
You can do it.
You always could.
