February 3, 2023,
The past is gone.
It doesn’t exist.
Anywhere.
In film? Yes, artificially. But in reality, nowhere else.
Since that appears to be the case, wouldn’t it be wise not to be stuck there?
If you feel you are trapped in the past, emotionally, because you certainly cannot be physically there, think about ways that you can move on.
It is in your best interest to do so.
Since we spoke of film, here is one that is very entertaining, packed with depth and is an excellent example of the importance of moving on.
The Accidental Tourist is a 1988 American romantic drama film directed and co-produced by Lawrence Kasdan.
The film stars William Hurt as Macon Leary, a middle-aged travel writer whose life and marriage have been shattered by the tragic death of his son. It also stars Kathleen Turner and Geena Davis as well.
The Accidental Tourist was theatrically released in the United States on December 23, 1988, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film received critical acclaim and grossed over $32.6 million. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with Geena Davis winning Best Supporting Actress. It was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama.
If you or someone you love seems stuck in the past, this movie is worth a look.
Here in part is why it is so hard to move on from the past, especially in terms of negative experiences.
The team at psychologytoday.com educate, “According to neuroscience, the brain handles negative and positive information differently. Negative experiences require more thinking and, thus, are processed more thoroughly. This causes our brains to become better at remembering adverse events.”
One more film.
This one is a little surprising to be on the list but something occurred that has driven the main female character indoors.
The Woman in the Window is a 2021 American psychological thriller film directed by Joe Wright from a screenplay by Tracy Letts, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by pseudonymous author A. J. Finn.
The film follows an agoraphobic woman (Amy Adams) who begins to spy on her new neighbors (Gary Oldman, Fred Hechinger, and Julianne Moore) and is witness to a crime in their apartment. Anthony Mackie, Wyatt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, and Jennifer Jason Leigh also star.
Here is the storyline.
Child psychologist Anna Fox lives alone in a Manhattan brownstone after separating from her husband Edward; he lives away with their daughter Olivia, but she talks to them on a daily basis. Anna suffers from agoraphobia and her housebound state leads her to observe all of her neighbors from a second-story window, including the Russell family who recently moved in across the street. She also takes a large number of medications and drinks heavily.
Why is she behaving this way?
You will find out. If only she wasn’t stuck in the past.
Let’s turn our attention to some experts who can help us on this subject and walk over to the bookstore.
The Power of Letting Go: How to drop everything that’s holding you back Paperback – April 7, 2020
By John Purkiss (Author)
How to drop everything that’s holding you back
The Power of Letting Go brings together a number of key principles that come up for anyone who is on the journey of self-enquiry and development. At some point, the choice becomes clear, whether to hold on or let go.
For many others, there are multiple layers and obstacles that have built up through one’s life so far. Expectations, fear of uncertainty, well-worn inhibitive thought patterns, lack of trust, lack of acceptance, old trauma and hurt. Despite all this, there is a spark, a glimmer of hope that brightens at the thought of letting go and going with the flow, at following one’s instincts and intuition rather than constantly second-guessing the outcome, at letting go of expectations and enjoying what is. This book combines both the why and the how to let go, with excellent practices that help convert the desire into action.
There are four stages to letting go:
- Be Present and Enjoy Each Moment
- Let Go of the Thoughts that Keep You Stuck
- Let Go of the Pain that Runs Your Life
- Surrender and Tune into Something Far More Intelligent than Your Brain”
Great suggestions.
One more book from another point of view.
Really Moving On: Healthy Ways to Let Go and Find Closure Paperback – August 2, 2021
By Pierre Alex Jeanty (Author), Carla Dupont (Editor)
“Did you know there’s a difference between letting go and moving on and between moving on and REALLY moving on? Did you know unhealed wounds destroy a lot of good relationships?
After heartbreak, many people don’t let go or move on properly which, unfortunately, starts a terrible cycle in their personal lives. In order to find new love, you must close chapters that aren’t supposed to be open anymore. You have to do more than put band aids on issues, brush actual healing under the rug, and do just enough to jump headfirst into the next relationship.
Really Moving On is a guide to help you navigate real healing and closure, and prepare for real love. It’s also a deep dive into the different myths, habits, and practices that hinder us from actually moving on physically, mentally, and emotionally.
So… are you ready to unlearn the wrong things and learn the right things to do?
Pick up your copy of “Really Moving on” and get started on a path less traveled. It’s time to get the closure your heart and soul needs.”
Closure.
On the past.
At some time in our life, we almost all need that.
In our personal experience, the two main reasons you need to move on from the past is that you can do absolutely nothing to change it.
Nothing.
The second is that it impedes and paralyzes you from moving on and being available in the present.
It is like the unfortunate experience of losing a child. As traumatic as it is, you still have to remember the other children in your home that are still there. You need to be there for them.
In the present.
The brilliant film Ordinary People speaks to that.
The present is to be approached aggressively, since all of us are running out of time to move forward, set new goals and achieve them.
You have a window of opportunity to do so.
Our suggestion?
Do it right now.
