August 26, 2020,
We’ve been asked to go inward. For a very long time.
Globally.
Pandemics have a way of doing that to civilizations.
Think positive. You’re joining the In Crowd.
Thus, inward we are, hopefully by a window with a view.
An opportunity that presents itself with many possibilities, if you are staying home and creating a new schedule, is the daily practice to include yoga on your health, fitness and wellness itinerary.
Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India.
Yoga is one of the six Āstika (orthodox) schools of Hindu philosophical traditions.
There is a broad variety of yoga schools, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
The term “Yoga” in the Western world often denotes a modern form of hatha yoga and yoga as exercise, consisting largely of the postures called asanas.
Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. Something that can so beneficial in today’s spiritual climate.
It is an art and science of healthy living. Well-being. Peace of mind.
Yoga does not adhere to any particular religion, belief system or community.
“Yoga is a method for restraining the natural turbulence of thoughts, which otherwise impartially prevent all men, of all lands, from glimpsing their true nature of Spirit. Yoga cannot know a barrier of East and West any more than does the healing and equitable light of the sun.”… Paramahansa Yogananda
It has always been approached as a technology for inner well-being
The word ‘Yoga‘ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’.
Yoga gurus from India later introduced yoga to the West, following the success of Swami Vivekananda in the late 19th and early 20th century with his adaptation of yoga tradition, not including asanas.
Outside India, it has developed into a posture-based physical fitness, stress-relief and relaxation technique.
Let’s stay within India. There is much wisdom there. Especially in relation to yoga.
At mea.gov.in, The Ministry of External Affairs by the government of India where they speak to the history of yoga. “Several Thousand years ago, on the banks of the lake Kantisarovar in the Himalayas, Adiyogi poured his profound knowledge into the legendary Saptarishis or “seven sages”. The sages carried this powerful yogic science to different parts of the world, including Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa and South America. Interestingly, modern scholars have noted and marveled at the close parallels found between ancient cultures across the globe. However, it was in India that the yogic system found its fullest expression. Agastya, the Saptarishi who travelled across the Indian subcontinent, crafted this culture around a core yogic way of life.”
Very informative.
They add, “Yoga is also commonly understood as a therapy or exercise system for health and fitness. While physical and mental health are natural consequences of yoga, the goal of yoga is more far-reaching. “Yoga is about harmonizing oneself with the universe. It is the technology of aligning individual geometry with the cosmic, to achieve the highest level of perception and harmony.”

As of this August 26, 2020 writing, due to the Coronavirus, the world is a very different place.
In terms of sheltering in and social distancing, along with Social Safeness, we may have entered into a new era where, like our ancestors, we will be spending much more time indoors. New schedules and habits will need to be created.
We can’t think of anything more productive to add to your daily or weekly routine than yoga.
It has been around and loved for more than a thousand years for a reason.
