June 13, 2023,
Is the world crumbling?
Tree by tree.
Brick by brick.
Violence and murder everywhere. No country seems immune.
Sometimes it sure feels like it.
Why?
Where do we begin? There could be a trillion reasons. Some of them seem unsolvable. Do we really believe we can bring the rain forests back? Do we really believe that with all of the emission changes that we can stop the waters from rising?
So, in the interest of time, let’s don’t go there. Fair enough?
Let’s go somewhere else. Even if it is temporary.
What has amazed and enticed us, in watching movies, are films that depict people living the good life amid the chaos, but away from it.
Even in a thriller.
Shall we escape together?
Time to go to the theaters.
Deadly Illusions is a 2021 American erotic thriller film written and directed by Anna Elizabeth James and starring Kristin Davis, Dermot Mulroney, Greer Grammer, and Shanola Hampton.’
Remember Kristin Davis? What a babe. Think Sex and the City.
Kristin is an American actress and producer. She is known for playing Charlotte York Goldenblatt in the HBO romantic comedy series Sex and the City (1998–2004).
Davis’s big break came in 1995, when she was cast as the villainous Brooke Armstrong in the Fox prime time soap opera Melrose Place (1995–1996).
Watched it. Loved it.
In the film Deadly Illusions, what mesmerized and captivated us, was not only Kristen’s gorgeous raven haired look but the incredible lifestyle she and her husband loved.
Let’s get back to the story.
Mary Morrison, a successful author of thriller novels, is happily married to Tom with two young children. Her publisher, asking her to write another book, offers a two million dollar advance.
Yippee.
She initially declines but has to accept after Tom says he lost half of their estate on a risky investment. Mary’s friend Elaine suggests hiring a nanny to help with the kids as she writes and, after a few interviews, she employs Grace.
Wait, let’s rephrase that.
Completely gorgeous Grace.
Let the fantasies begin.
Mary has writer’s block and uses her blossoming friendship with Grace to inspire her. Mary then starts having what appears to be sexual fantasies about Grace. She also seems to dream about Grace and Tom engaging in sexual activity in the kitchen, but cannot tell if it is real or her vivid imagination.
Hard to say.
But fun to watch.
Perhaps the world is crumbling but if you stay inside of Mary’s bubble, life is sexy, wealthy and filled with guilty pleasures.
This is fun.
Let’s keep going.
The next film is one where you don’t know what is real or not, yet it is incredibly fun along the way.
Swimming Pool is a 2003 erotic thriller film directed by François Ozon and starring Charlotte Rampling and Ludivine Sagnier.
The plot focuses on a British crime novelist, Sarah Morton, who travels to her publisher’s upmarket summer house in Southern France to seek solitude in order to work on her next book.
The house is to die for.
Have you ever taken one of those get away from it all weekends to some country villa?
One of our associates who worked in advertising had a client who owned a secluded villa near a misty forest and allowed him to spend a weekend there. It was wonderful.
Including baths by candlelight.
Walked with a deer.
The outside world existed but for one misty weekend, it was as though it didn’t.
So, at the villa in the Swimming Pool film, after becoming comfortable with the run of the spacious, sun-filled house and meeting the groundskeeper, Marcel, Sarah’s quietude is disrupted by a young woman claiming to be the publisher’s daughter, Julie. She shows up late one night explaining that she is taking time off from work herself.
Julie’s sex life consists of one-night stands with various men, and a competition of personalities develops between the two women.
Doesn’t it usually when there is lots of wild sex involved?
What we loved about this picturesque gem were the landscapes, small village charm, sipping coffee while watching life go by and looking at every angle of the gorgeous Julie.
So, this is how the idle rich live. Reaction?
We absolutely love it.
The film ignited controversy with audiences because of its ambiguous nature and unclear conclusion which can be interpreted in various ways.
Our take?
Who cares?
What was real or not, does it really matter? That is the fun of a film like this. Place your own spin on it. Weave it into your own fantasy. Especially when there is a beautiful young blonde spoiled princess involved.
One more.
We loved the exceptional, walk back in time, Mad Men television series.
One of the episodes that really stood out was “The Jet Set”.
Don Draper takes a business trip to Los Angeles, where he hooks up with some interesting new wealthy acquaintances. Do these people ever work?
They take in the sun, eat delicious food, act very pretentious, pontificate, have great sex, pontificate some more, drink sensational liquor and are the perfect example of the idle rich. Completely full of themselves.
Where can we sign up?
Is there a beautiful young woman involved?
Of course there is and she thinks Don is beautiful. Well, if a gorgeous young woman thinks you are beautiful, we sense that you can guess what will soon happen.
Don does indeed partake? Doesn’t he always, even when he shouldn’t?
As always, it was an episode that, in terms of escapism, was incredibly enjoyable to watch.
The sun drenched poolside, exceptional views and captivating star filled nights.
What a life.
It seems the harshness of today’s world is like watching a blue ink bottle spill its contents onto a white blank canvass and watch the blue liquid slowly cover and smear over everything with a great sense of dread.
Is the jet set lifestyle the answer to everything?
No, of course not. Often it comes across as shallow, lacking in loyalty and ultimately meaningless but, just for the moment, it does have its place.
As a temporary escape from the madness engulfing our shrinking pain filled world.
It is the perfect medicine.
