November 27, 2021,
Why aren’t there any tennis tournaments in Antarctica?
That has been a burning question for you for some time, right? You’ve discussed it with friends and family over dinner and just couldn’t get your question satisfactorily answered.
Even got into debates about it.
One of the world’s greatest mysteries?
Not really.
First of all, it is really cold there and most tennis players compete in short pants or skirts.
Second, there are virtually no people permanently living there.
Ticket sales would be really sparse.
As educated by National Geographic, “Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent in terms of total area. (It is larger than both Oceania and Europe.) Antarctica is a unique continent in that it does not have a native population. There are no countries in Antarctica.”
Antarctica is Earth‘s southernmost continent.
It contains the geographic South Pole and is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean.
At 5,500,000 square miles, it is the fifth-largest continent and nearly twice the size of Australia.
It is by far the least populated continent, with around 5,000 people in the summer and around 1,000 in the winter.
Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents.
Get this.
Antarctica contains 80% of the world’s freshwater reserves, enough to raise global sea levels by about 200 feet if all of it were to melt.
Okay, still, part of the challenge of life is to do things that have never been done previously (before the ice melts).
Guess what?
Wonders never cease.
There is a tennis tournament scheduled to be played in Antarctica.
Yes, really. Truly.
As reported by tennisnow.com, “Hall of Famer John McEnroe will face younger brother Patrick McEnroe in what is being billed as the first-ever pro tennis match in Antarctica—and you can be there to see history in February.”
Well, we told you so. So what’s it all about Frosty?
The team at nysportsjournalism.squarespace.com fill in the details. They smile, “If you have ever wanted to spend nearly two weeks with John McEnroe and Patrick McEnroe, and not only watch them play tennis but have an opportunity to play against them — and if that quest also took you to Antarctica — that opportunity is here.”
Sounds like an incredible once in a lifetime opportunity.
We remember back in the day when we used to play some very serious amateur tennis here in Nor Cal and we would love to contact some of our old tennis buddies and convince them to join us and take that exciting trip.
The McEnroe brothers have such a great sense of humor. We’re certain they’ll have us splitting our sides before the ship even leaves port.
They add that, LegendsAbroad.com, which hosts and manages unique travel experiences worldwide, is planning this once in a lifetime tennis adventure for a limited number of travelers to spend eleven days with John and Patrick McEnroe.
Let’s meet the hosts of this epic historic journey.
