December 26, 2021,
Most likely you have experienced this.
We certainly have. Over and over.
In business, your product was not delivered on time. The check you received bounced. The potential client did not show up for an important appointment, nor called ahead.
Here the list is endless.
In family life, the child did it, but said they didn’t. Another did not score well on their exam and expressed that the professor does not like them.
Please don’t let us get started on romantic relationships.
What do they have in common?
Examples of people, little or large, who do not take responsibility for their actions.
It is certainly the easy way out.
Being responsible speaks to being reliable, trustworthy, honest and accountable for your actions.
It also propels you to being a far more successful person.
The team at psychologytoday.com educates, “Personal responsibility means that you unequivocally hold that you are 100 percent responsible for producing your desired results, no matter how hard it may be. Remember: You always have a choice to do or not to do, and you are always the chooser of the choice you choose.”
We choose to take responsibility for our actions. We’ve found that it is the only way to grow and transition into the more mature and successful person you can be if you take responsibility and learn from your mistakes.
It applies to organizations too.
At Female Competition International (FCI), we work with female grapplers and other performing artists.
Recently at our October 2, 2021 Female Sports and Entertainment Event at the San Francisco Airport Hyatt, we contracted out with female grapplers, Samba Dancers, an Opera Singer, a Competitive Cheer group and an artist who performed Traditional Japanese dance.
In booking artists, we’ve found that few of them actually keep their word and take responsibility for their actions. As a result, we only book them through an agency or recruiter.
That way, they are impelled not to make excuses for not keeping their word because there will be consequences.
Everything goes smoother when we all take responsibility for our actions because others are greatly affected when we don’t.
Here is a book we found at Amazon that shares the rewards of doing so.
Stepping Up, Second Edition: How Taking Responsibility Changes Everything Paperback – November 24, 2020
By John B. Izzo
“The perfect book for the times in which we live . . . page after page of engaging stories, profound insights, and practical tips on how you can stand up and take responsibility for making something meaningful happen.”
–Jim Kouzes, coauthor of the bestselling The Leadership Challenge
“All too often, the challenges we face seem overwhelming. Where do we start? What if we fail? But bestselling author John Izzo argues that almost every problem, from personal difficulties and business challenges to social issues, can be solved if all of us look to ourselves to create change rather than looking to others. And with the research to prove it, Izzo shows that by seeing ourselves as the locus of control rather than the victims of change, we are happier, less stressed, and more powerful.
Izzo shows how taking responsibility changes our careers, our companies, our lives, and our communities. This book is filled with stories that illustrate the incredible power of stepping up: a homeless man who started a recycling revolution, a middle-aged Italian shopkeeper who fought back against the Mafia, two teenagers who ignited an antibullying movement, an executive who turned a dying division into a profit center, and a few employees who created a multibillion dollar product for Starbucks, and many more. This second edition includes a new chapter on the Stepping Up Continuum, a model that looks at six ways to know if you are stepping up or stepping back, as well as fresh stories and a self-assessment tool for helping leaders create a culture for stepping up in their organizations. We have the power within ourselves to move mountains–we just have to decide that we are the ones to do it.”
Well said.
At FCI, we always like to get differing point of views and share other ways at viewing the same subject from a different angle.
We are not always right. Ours is not the only way to do things.
In terms of taking responsibility for our actions, we have a visiting female writer with some intriguing thoughts.
Positive Women – Own Your Life And Take Responsibility
Everywhere you go, you can hear someone blaming someone else for their problems but as a positive women you get to own your life and take responsibility and THAT is the most honorable, powerful thing you will ever do!
“No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning oneself.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
The above line was spoken by Academy Award Winning Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in “Firelight,” his Hallmark, Hall of Fame movie about a Georgia correctional facility for young women. It was the most powerful statement by an actor who has always blown me away with the feeling and realism he puts into monologues in his powerful performances.
I got to see his movie in the Paramount Studio Theater in Hollywood before seeing him in person at the taping of the Dr. Phil Show. The movie has a powerful message about taking responsibility and owning your life. The live audience laughed, cried, reflected on their own lives and I think everyone was very touched by this story based on truth.
Enough about Cuba, this is about positive women!
When we take responsibility for the good, the bad and everything in between, we find our inner power – what positive women are all about!
We create everything in our lives with our thoughts, feelings and actions (whether we recognize it at the time or not). We can trace every situation and communication (positive or negative) in our lives back to ourselves. I realize most people won’t accept responsibility for everything in their life but I’ve learned to do this, no matter how painful it can be, and I’ve seen tremendous, amazing and speedy results for me and the other women I know who have chosen to access their inner power.
Take responsibility for your life. It’s the ONLY thing you CAN take responsibility for. ~ Kelly Rudolph
If you think someone else is responsible for your results, you are a victim and victims never win.
The privilege of owning oneself, of taking responsibility for creating everything in our lives is a gift. Maybe you have a challenging relationship, health situation or career path. I know, for a fact, that you can trace each of those back (possibly to very early childhood) and locate the first programming that set your belief system up for these challenges. You can find the triggers to this programming that came along throughout your life to create such situations and by changing your programming, create new, better situations.
I have traced challenges in my life back to the beginning and been amazed and grateful for the opportunity to take responsibility of recreating what I truly want.
Remember, positive woman… “No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning oneself.” You and only you possess the inner power to live the life you desire so take a step forward into owning who you are and who you are becoming.
