May 7, 2021,
The weather is getting warmer and we are already warmed up to the idea of spending a lot of time outdoors.
Looking cool. Hydrating cool.
Running, jogging, hiking, walking down crowded city streets and exercising on the patio.
So relaxing and spirit lifting.
We are also feeling it is a very cool idea to eat and indulge in foods that we didn’t enjoy during the winter.
Covid-19 restrictions are lifting and that alone is lifting our spirits and mood.
You know what puts us in a good mood after feeling a little down?
Slurping on a delicious smoothie.
How can you be depressed or in a bad mood when you have a delicious smoothie in front of you.
We can’t imagine.
If you’ve never made one, a smoothie is a drink made from pureed raw fruit and or vegetables, using a blender.
A smoothie often has a liquid base such as fruit juice, dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, ice cream or cottage cheese. Smoothies may be made using other ingredients, such as non-dairy milk, crushed ice, sweeteners (honey or sugar), vinegar, whey powder, chocolate or nutritional supplements, among others by personal choice.
Sounds great. We are getting summer enticed already.
Typically we have purchased our smoothies from sandwich shops but this year we really are going to keep an open mind to other smoothie experimenting options.
One of the options we haven’t previously thought of are smoothie subscription boxes.
This was one of the few industries that actually did well during the pandemic.
As reported by secondmeasure.com, “Since January 2019, the market size for smoothie subscription boxes has tripled. Sales accelerated the most in the early months of the pandemic, and monthly year-over-year sales growth in 2020 averaged 97 percent. Smoothie box companies also experienced noticeable sales spikes in January of each year.”
The healthfulness of a smoothie depends on its ingredients and their proportions. Many smoothies include large or multiple servings of fruits and vegetables, which are recommended in a healthy diet and intended to be a meal replacement.
However, fruit juice containing high amounts of sugar can increase caloric intake and promote weight gain. Similarly, ingredients such as protein powders, sweeteners, or ice cream are often used in smoothie recipes, some of which contribute mostly to flavor and further caloric intake.
It’s easy to go off the nutrition rails since incredible smoothies come in all flavors and styles.
Our personal favorites are strawberry, peanut butter, banana and just plain old reliable vanilla.
We want to stay inside of the nutrition lines. At least most of the time.
We are open to suggestions.
“So I have the green smoothie every day for breakfast, and then sometimes even for lunch too, and then I have a normal dinner.”…Dita Von Teese
A green smoothie typically consists of 40–50% green vegetables, usually raw green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, swiss chard, collard greens, celery, parsley, or broccoli, with the remaining ingredients being mostly or entirely fruit.
Wheatgrass and spirulina are also used as healthful ingredients.
Speaking of healthy choices, the team at studyfinds.org shares, “Need more convincing that you should add leafy green vegetables to your daily diet? Not only are they good for the muscles and waistline, a new study reveals they’re also good for the heart. Researchers in Australia find nitrate-rich vegetables, leafy greens and beetroot, lower blood pressure and the risk of developing heart disease.”
Thanks for the info. Good to know.
There is a lot going on in the smoothie world and we’ve always admired a group who seems to know this special market very well.
