February 22, 2022,
Have you heard the expression that every problem can be solved? Every problem has a solution?
We have.
We know it’s not true though. Why?
Death is a problem. A big one. It is inevitable for all of us and it can’t be solved.
So, having said that, we feel that most of the other problems can be solved or at least eased.
The key to problem solving appears to be exceptional critical thinking.
Critical thinking is the analysis of facts to form a judgment. To solve a problem.
The subject is complex, and several different definitions exist, which generally include the rational, skeptical, unbiased analysis, or evaluation of factual evidence.
Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking.
You see, it involves critical thinking to understand what critical thinking means.
We often turn to movies for examples of what to do and sometimes what not to do.
Let’s review the latter.
How many times have you watched a film where a beautiful wife feels that her husband is neglecting her, spending too much time away on the job, making money (which she gladly spends) and doesn’t see her?
Often what is her solution?
To have an affair. With an extremely handsome bad boy. Usually dressed in black.
How is that for critical thinking?
Now we don’t mean to be critical but instead of solving the initial problem, she seems to have created another problem larger than the first one. Did she ever hear of marriage counseling?
Now the husband finds out and in a rage he goes and beats up her lover.
Then the police find out and beat up her husband.
Then when the husband goes to jail, many people beat him up.
Then when the husband gets out of jail, he kills his wife and her lover while they are in the bed together (we did say it was a movie).
Now he is on the run from the police.
Then he meets a beautiful woman who sympathizes with his plight.
She wears black.
Now she is aiding and abetting a criminal act.
Well, enough.
It all started with his wife wanting to be seen by her husband. Now, no one is seeing her except the earth worms.
We don’t think that was the solution that she had in mind.
While that may seem like an extreme example, in all fairness, when you read or watch the news, it can be very puzzling how some people seem to solve their problems.
That’s why they are on the news. Right?
We recently saw a film that we really enjoyed. Afterwards we researched the great actor involved and to our surprise found out, in real life, he has been indicted by the FBI for financial fraud where investors lost millions.
What?
He’s an actor for crying out loud. Maybe a big pay day was coming. Couldn’t he find another way to solve his money problems?
We know of a situation in our circle where a friend’s neighbor was getting annoyed with a homeless person who was seen stealing packages off of neighborhood porches and rummaging through the neighborhood dumpster.
What was his neighbor’s solution to solve the problem?
He sic’d his German shepherd on him. Bite him!
Needless to say, he and the homeless guy almost got in a fight. Fortunately our associate calmed both of them down.
Well, at least he didn’t get his gun.
Then there was the actress who wanted to play Cat Woman so badly that she wore a cat suit on a television show to impress the producer and actor involved in the film.
Nice idea actually.
Except that the cat suit was home made.
Meow, Meow. Me out of a job.
Well, let’s turn our attention to a female detective who was a great problem solver and critical thinker.
Nancy Drew is a fictional character, a sleuth in an American mystery series created by publisher Edward Stratemeyer as the female counterpart to his Hardy Boys series.
The character first appeared in 1930.
The books are ghostwritten by a number of authors and published under the collective pseudonym Carolyn Keene. Over the decades, the character evolved in response to changes in US culture and tastes.
Nancy was one heck of a sleuth and problem solver to last that long.
By all accounts, our super heroine is over 90 years old and while she hasn’t cheated death, she at least pushed the hold button.
What other book might help with critical thinking?
Let’s visit Amazon.
Critical Thinking: Understanding The Principles And Processes of Thinking Well Kindle Edition
In Critical Thinking, Dr. Rogers’ purpose is to give readers the skills they need to engage in analytical thought. The point of critical thinking is to be able to think deeply and clearly about important concerns, to formulate sound arguments, and to evaluate the arguments offered by others. To help readers develop the insights and skills they need to be good critical thinkers, Rogers discusses:
What Critical is and why it is important.
The foundational features of critical thinking.
The cognitive and applied dimensions of analytical thought.
The basics of logic.
The role of assumptions in analytical thought.
The difference between implications and inferences.
The role of language in critical thinking.
The importance of research in analytical thought.
Logical fallacies.
The differences between critical and non-critical thinkers.
How to construct a sound argument.
How to write an argumentative essay and much more.”
Sounds intriguing and could be a must read.
Let’s face it, in this growingly complicated life, we are confronted with problems and we need to think critically and effectively to solve them.
We’re sure you already know this but going by the examples in the movies (which many people actually do) is not always wise.
We just read about what the exceptional male actor did in real life to make some extra mansion and fancy sports car money and how many times on film have we seen the female character struggling with money and what is her solution to make ends meet?
Oh come on. You already know.
Become a hooker of course.
Mostly high end. Nice rear end.
We saw one film, based upon a true story, where she introduced her daughter into the “life”.
Oh, oh. We sense you are being critical.
But you know what?
Isn’t it better than the standard good guy film where he’s broke, the bills are piling up so he thinks critically and takes 20 people hostage at a bank and faces off with against a super cop and critical thinker because his son has cancer or his wife has cancer, or his mother has cancer, or his dog needs to get his balls cut off because he might have cancer or his mother in-law is under the sign of cancer and his relationship with her is cancerous?
We know all of this problem solving can get a little confusing but we’ve decided, instead of turning to the movies for some really unique and neat ideas, instead we’re going to read a book.
