Forcing her way into the room, knocking down as many doors as she opens, the world of the strong female super hero is upon us.
One super heroine from the past who continues to get a makeover is Red Sonja.
Red Sonja is a fictional character, a sword-and-sorcery comic-book heroine created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973.
In this story, Red Sonja lives with her family in a humble house in the Western Hyrkanian steppes (this seems to be in modern Ukraine/Russia though historical Hyrcania is on the borders of modern Iran/Turkmenistan).
When she is just 17, a group of mercenaries kills her family and burns down their house. Sonja attempts to defend herself, but can’t lift her brother’s sword. She is brutally raped by the leader of the group. Answering her cry for revenge, the red goddess Scáthach appears to her, and gives her incredible fighting skills, on the condition that she never lie with a man unless he defeats her in fair combat.
Naturally a movie is in order.
The film Red Sonja is a 1985 Dutch-American sword and sorcery action film directed by Richard Fleischer.
The film introduces Brigitte Nielsen as the title character with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, Ronald Lacey, Ernie Reyes, Jr., Paul L. Smith and Pat Roach in supporting roles. The film features the sword-wielding Marvel Comics character Red Sonja, created by Roy Thomas, who first appeared in Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian series (#23) in 1973.

At the informative site biography.com they educate, “An Egyptian queen renowned for her beauty, Nefertiti ruled alongside her husband, Pharaoh Akhenaten, during the mid-1300s B.C.
Nefertiti, whose name means “a beautiful woman has come,” was the queen of Egypt and wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten during the 14th century B.C. She and her husband established the cult of Aten, the sun god, and promoted Egyptian artwork that was radically different from its predecessors. A bust of Nefertiti is one of the most iconic symbols of Egypt.”

Yes, our feminine heroes have come a long way and continue to gain parity traction.
As reported at the very informative and entertaining global source The Huffington Post, “According to research conducted by Vocativ’s Tracy Clark-Flory and Tal Reznik, the Marvel and DC universes have come a long way on the path to gender parity in comics since Wonder Woman’s first appearance decades ago. “Female superheroes are breaking comics’ glass ceiling,” their new article asserts.
Since 2000 alone, Marvel has added 18 women-led titles.
A roundup of data from 1941 to 2015 shows that in the year 1994, nine male characters entered the canon, compared with only two female. Sixteen years later, in 2010, the spread was six male characters to four female characters, a small but significant jump. Women characters are starting to get their own series faster than the men, too: According to Vocativ, it takes a female superheroine about 15 years to get her own title, while it takes male characters 18.”
