Massive square boxes.
They are made of concrete and steel, adorned with window dressings and a patio where you can decorate with plants. Provide yourself a feeling of combating climate change, one leaf at a time.
Nicely painted too.
Still it is a box.
Many Northern California cities were once filled with Victorians. Elegant regal structures that spoke to individuality, wealth and success. Wonderful places to raise a family and build unique and principled memories.
Now they are being flattened and replaced with large concrete boxes. Nicely painted.
Given the population surge, around the world, it doesn’t seem to be realistic that city blocks will continue to be appointed with Victorians when massive apartment and condo complexes, complete with remote controlled parking, can house far more people.
As we walk down California City streets, what strikes us the most is how this new community lifestyle creates anonymity. Who lives on the 5th floor? Who lives in the middle unit?
If there ever was a word that can make you feel anonymous, meaningless and completely conformed is the word unit.
Hi, we live in unit 45. Where is that you ask? Take the elevator to the 3rd floor, turn right and it is 5 doors down.
And it looks just like all of the other units.
The increase in population is a massive factor in builders making these decisions to create these hovels that are incredibly profitable. Very expensive to buy or rent. Long waiting lists to move in.
There also seems to be another factor in why people are attracted to them.
You can remain anonymous.
Yes there is a dog park nearby and a community garden where you and your neighbors can grow pest free vegetables to eat, but you don’t have to participate if you don’t want to.
Abstain and you can remain anonymous.
One of the benefits to remaining anonymous is that you don’t stand out and you don’t stand up. For anything. That could get you in trouble.
There was a time when you could stand up for your principles and even if you went up against someone more powerful who could squash you like a bug, their own morals and principles were a restraint to doing so. They believed in freedom of speech and your right to your beliefs.
Most of those people are gone.
Now we live in a world of wolves who have no morals or principles and ruling by revenge and violence is the order of the day. Going up against these personality profiles, who are organized, is only going to end badly. For you.
When you engage, your morals and principles confine you to the white stripes and playing field.
With them?
They can go up into the stands and outside the white lines into much darker ones. For them, as the expression goes, winning is everything.
They hunt like wolves.
The experts at livingwithwolves.org educate, “Wolves are opportunists. They test their prey, sensing any weakness or vulnerability through visual cues and even through hearing and scent. Contrary to ambush predators that rely on the element of surprise and a short and intense burst of energy to secure their prey.”
Very foreboding.
They add, it is during a hunt where co-operation between wolves within a pack is most apparent. A wolf pack may trail a herd of elk, caribou or other large prey for days before making its move. During this time, they are already hunting, assessing the herd, looking for an animal that displays any sign of weakness, and this is just the beginning.
From a surge in gun violence, policemen committing suicide, an ever growing drug epidemic, societal unrest to extensive government corruption, the average person would prefer not to get involved.
Won’t change anything anyway. Just would bring bad things into my life.
Why when you don’t have to.
Probably a good idea. In the short term. Horrible in the long term. Do that?
The wolf pack just gets stronger.
Picking us off one weak person at a time.
A film that becomes more and more unsettling every time we watch it is Sicario.
Sicario, Spanish for “hitman“, is a 2015 action thriller film directed by Denis Villeneuve, written by Taylor Sheridan and starring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Victor Garber.
The film follows a principled FBI agent who is enlisted by a United States government task force to bring down the leader of a powerful and brutal Mexican drug cartel.
The film was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing at the 88th Academy Awards. It also earned BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Music.
Here is the storyline.
In Chandler, Arizona, FBI agents Kate Macer and Reggie Wayne lead a raid on a suspected Sonora Cartel safe house where they discover dozens of decaying corpses and a booby trap which kills two police officers. Following the raid, Kate’s boss recommends her for a Department of Justice and Department of Defense joint task force overseen by CIA officer Matt Graver and the secretive Alejandro Gillick.
Assured that the task force has been set up to apprehend Sonora Cartel lieutenant Manuel Díaz and to bring to justice those responsible for the safe-house incident, Kate joins the operation.
Kate? Nothing is what it appears to be.
You will find that those high standards, morals and principles will turn you into a, forgive the expression, lone wolf.
But that is just the problem. Kate is not a wolf.
The movie should have started with the disclaimer that it is based upon a true story because it sure felt like one.
She does meet many wolves along the hot desert strewn way, but the biggest and meanest wolf is on her team.
Or is he?
Kate eventually finds out that he is on his own team but is wise enough to hunt with a pack.
To hunt monsters.
As far as the “he who fights with monsters must be careful lest he thereby become a monster” theory is just that. To him, a theory. An ineffective one.
He didn’t get Nietzsche’s memo.
Or he did and didn’t read it?
Or he did and he read it, but didn’t give a darn about applying it.
He proves to Kate, at least here, a principled lone wolf will never defeat a monstrous unprincipled one who hunts with a pack.
It seems most of us are starting to agree with him.
So we remain anonymous in our concrete and wooden hovels. Nicely decorated and smartly painted. Complete with a balcony where we can place nice little plants and sooth our conscience about global warming. A realm controlled by corporate wolves who hunt in a pack.
We don’t want to get involved.
We don’t want any trouble.
Wait. Did we say something wrong?
Excuse us for a second. What is that we hear?
Wolves howling outside the door.
