September 27, 2024,
Certain pathways in life, no matter the time period, seem to hold true.
Small streams form larger streams, which turn into rivers, which flow to lakes, seas or the ocean.
It all starts somewhere.
Somewhere small.
This translates to the present. Taking life one day at a time.
The past is gone and we can never bring it back. Even when there are reunions, there appears to be a glimpse of the past, but we are still older. The future is important to plan for but, as we know, it is not remotely guaranteed nor does it always evolve into what we thought it would. Otherwise, everyone would be extremely rich and live the perfect life.
Sometimes that does happen, but not as often as we would like.
So, fortunately, we have to live in the moment. Moments turn into hours. Hours turn into days.
One day at a time.
The idea of course is to try and string as many good days together as you can. Make great memories. Let your days become streams that build a reservoir of memories.
When was the best time of your life?
For many, it was high school. This is why films or television series about teen life remain so popular.
This is a classic.
Thirteen is a 2003 drama film directed by Catherine Hardwicke, written by Hardwicke and Nikki Reed, and starring Holly Hunter, Evan Rachel Wood and Nikki Reed with Jeremy Sisto, Brady Corbet, Deborah Kara Unger, Kip Pardue, Sarah Clarke, D. W. Moffett, Vanessa Hudgens (in her film acting debut), and Jenicka Carey in supporting roles.
Loosely based on Nikki Reed’s early life, the film’s plot follows Tracy, a seventh-grade student in Los Angeles who begins dabbling in substance abuse, sex and crime after being befriended by a troubled classmate.
As you might guess, if the film was done well, and it was, it might be controversial.
Though it received numerous favorable reviews from critics, the film generated some controversy for its depiction of youth drug use (including inhalants, marijuana, LSD and alcohol), underage sexual behavior, and self-harm.
Be that as it may, doesn’t that speak to the youth that a number of us had.
And through it all, if we survived that period and went on to college, we still might view it as the most important days of our life.
The friendships were intense and felt real. The romances, new and unforgettable. Often having feelings we would never feel again as adults because those new relationships are based upon work, contacts, money, position and power, all things that you can lose. Often when you do lose them, you lose the relationships as well.
The film earned Hunter an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Golden Globe nominations for Holly Hunter and Wood for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress in a Drama, respectively.
There are myriads of other high school scenarios, less controversial, which features the star of the football team and the beautiful popular cheerleader, often highs that will never be experienced again.
It impresses the importance of enjoying each moment. Hold on to it for as long as you can because, at some point, it will be gone.
There are other reasons to take life one day at a time. Maybe you are trying to sober up. It is critical that you take it one day at a time. Don’t look too far into the future.
Another popular youthful series that speaks to this is The OC.
The O.C. is an American teen drama television series created by Josh Schwartz that originally aired on Fox in the United States from August 5, 2003, to February 22, 2007, with a total of four seasons consisting of 92 episodes.
The series title, “O.C.”, is an initialism of Orange County, the location in Southern California in which the series is set.
The series centers on Ryan Atwood, a troubled and gifted young man from a broken home who is adopted by the wealthy and philanthropic Sandy and Kirsten Cohen. Ryan and his adoptive brother Seth, a socially awkward, quick-witted teenager, deal with life as outsiders in the high-class world of Newport Beach.
Storylines deal with the culture clash between the idealistic Cohen family and the shallow, materialistic, and closed-minded community in which they reside.
And most of the have nots, wish they could reside there.
What we loved about the series is that, at least for us, it appeared to give us a very realistic glimpse into a world that we have never been a part of. The elements of youth and wealth are very powerful. It is one thing to have wealth when you are older, it is another thing to have it when you are young, beautiful and vibrant.
The world can be your oyster.
Don’t question it. Enjoy it, one day at a time because it will most likely never happen again.
Let’s walk over to the bookstore.
