Common to cultures around the world, with a pledge from one young generation to the next, bold, daring and life altering experiences happen at night.
In the dark, with only a flicker of light. Sometimes pulsating. Strobing.
Especially if you orchestrate it. Enhance it. Even manipulate it.
Do it only at night.
Whatever works, and if it does work, it works in magical ways at night.
Night or nighttime is the period of ambient darkness from sunset to sunrise during each 24-hour day, when the Sun is below the horizon.
In song, the legendary techno pop rock band Depeche Mode sang about it. Here are some of the lyrics:
I’m waiting for the night to fall
I know that it will save us all
When everything’s dark
Keeps us from the stark reality
When everything is bearable
And there in the still
All that you feel is tranquility
There is a star in the sky
Guiding my way with its light
And in the glow of the moon
Know my deliverance will come soon…
Yes indeed. Night can keep us from the stark reality that we know so well in the daytime and can’t seem to escape.
At night we can become someone else, similar to the paint retailer by day and Disco Prince at night, like the main character in the classic film Saturday Night Fever.
When life is bland and ordinary in the daytime, which it often is for those of us who settled, then at night we can create a new and wonderful world, bursting with magic, where our first run dreams come true.
The ones we didn’t take the risk for when it mattered most.
To escape a world that our parents trapped us in when they had no plan, not only for themselves, but even less for us.
In diplomacy, an Embassy Attaché is a person who is assigned to the diplomatic or administrative staff of a higher placed person or another service or agency.
In the timeless film, The Year of Living Dangerously, the female Embassy Attaché, played with wrenching emotion and sometimes window closing desperation by Sigourney Weaver, our heroine risked it all, including getting shot at, during the darkest of the night, to be with her dashing lover who had just swept her off her feet.
Previously she was heading down the rabbit hole. The perfumed pathway sauntered down by so many previously failed romantics, looking for Mr. Right, hoping for Mr. Perfect and permanently finding neither, beckoning her to join them in delusional memory.
Convincing themselves that heir window has not closed but sensing that it has.
Misery always loves company.
Thus, though we may have failed in the daytime, we can spray magic dust and mist around us at night so that we still have at least one more chance.
The night has received a very bad reputation.
We didn’t say earned or deserved. Some might feel that way and we by no means are saying that really bad things don’t happen at night.
They do.
All of the time.
Especially in the big city.
But you know what?
Wonderful things happen at night in the big city as well.
Young Embassy good girl took a risk. She’ll never be young again. That night foray into the speeding car, win, lose or draw will never be regretted. She put herself out there.
For those of us who didn’t, we dread the dark. Because we are alone with our thoughts and sensory deprivation.
She dreams in the dark. Of the past. The memories of doing something so crazy when she was young and laughing out loud about it.
As for us?
We cry in the dark. Because we didn’t get in that symbolic car. We played it safe.
And now we’re old and can’t change it.
We dread the dark, because without the distractions of the daytime, we are alone in the dark with our regrets.
“Songs don’t have to be about going out on Saturday night and having a good rink-up and driving home and crashing cars. A lot of what I’ve done is about alienation… about where you fit in society.”…David Bowie
Therefore at night, especially before we turn forty, in the dark under soft light we orchestrate.
Manipulate.
Fornicate.
We want to dance the night away. To Van Halen.
Have you seen her?
So fine and pretty
Fooled me with her style and ease
And I feel her from across the room
Yes, it’s love in the third degree
Oh, baby baby
Won’t-cha turn your head my way?
Oh, baby baby
Ah come on take a chance
You’re old enough to
Dance the night away…
We go places at night, unusually dressed by our standards, where no one will recognize us as we emerge as someone else.
Neve Campbell’s character Julie Black who flaunted herself as a Manhattan Socialite in the film 54, actually is from New Jersey, but you would never know it. She doesn’t want you to. She’s just a babe trying to hustle her soap opera career into high gear.
What about you? Does the night hold special meaning for you?
Typically it falls into two categories.
Regret or basking in powerful memories. Memories where you have taken risks for what you loved and survived.
Or memories where something or someone you loved faded.
We drifted into music as we sadly or blissfully danced to it, now it is time to turn the lights out, keep our eyes open, grab our sweaters or coats and meander into film.
At night.
Please leave your sunglasses at home. You won’t need them.
Peppermint is a 2018 American vigilante action thriller film directed by Pierre Morel and starring Jennifer Garner.
Charles Bronson’s Mr. Paul Kersey of the original Death Wish franchise would be proud.
“We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.”…George Orwell
The plot follows a mother who sets out for revenge against the cartel that killed her husband and daughter.
The film was released in the United States on September 7, 2018. It has grossed over $53 million worldwide and received generally negative reviews from critics, although Jennifer’s performance was praised.
We’ve seen it all before. Somehow watching this one at night makes you feel it differently.
Apparently, as Mr. Orwell stated, we sleep safe in our beds because rough vigilante women stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.
The night will continue to hold a fascination for many in a good way or otherwise.
So much of it depends upon what you did in the daytime when it really mattered. When you had your chance. Knowing that it may be your last chance.
Take the risks, make the sacrifices and become vigilant and persistent in achieving your dreams, when it really counts, then you too will be waiting for the night to fall.
Where everything is bearable.
And there in the still, all that you feel is tranquility and satisfaction that you finally got it right.
