November 10, 2021,
Don’t blink.
Don’t sleep too long.
Pay attention.
Universities keep adding women’s wrestling programs at road runner speeds.
Here is another one to add to a growing list.
The news team at rivercountry.newschannelnebraska.com announced on October 14, 2021, “The Doane athletic program is adding a women’s wrestling program.
Today, the university announced that the board of trustees approved the decision and work will begin immediately. Women’s wrestling, one of the fastest growing sports, now brings Doane’s athletic program to 23 competitive sports. In May, the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) approved the sanctioning of girls wrestling and holding a state championship. It was previously an emerging sport. Currently, there are 37 NAIA universities and colleges with women’s wrestling, with more adding it this year.”
Yes, many more.
Let’s take a closer look at Doane University.
Doane University is a private university in Crete, Nebraska. It has additional campuses in Lincoln, Grand Island and Omaha.
On July 11, 1872, Doane College preempted the old Crete Academy. On May 9, 2016, the institution was renamed to Doane University. Doane is the first liberal arts and sciences college in Nebraska.
At their home, doane.edu they welcome, “Doane University is located on 300 gorgeous acres in Crete, Nebraska. We’ve really settled in over the last 148 years, creating a learning environment unlike anywhere else in the state. Come see the best campus in Nebraska for yourself.”
Give them credit. They are very confident. We can’t wait for them to say they have the best women’s wrestling program in Nebraska. That might happen soon.
They add, “Our nationally recognized liberal arts and sciences education will give you the skills you need for the career you want.
Few institutions can match our mission to include traditional undergraduate, adult and graduate learners. Fewer can boast our world-class liberal arts and sciences education built on pillars of leadership, inquiry, values and engagement. None can seamlessly weave it into one academic community that has stood tall for more than 140 years.
As a university that prides itself on doing everything it can to benefit its students, Doane was one of the first colleges to implement a four-year graduation guarantee, first offering it in 1995. With a four-year graduation guarantee, you will automatically be ahead of the typical college student who will graduate in six years according to the national average.
By choosing Doane, you put yourself on the path to start your professional career without the stress of paying for the extra years of tuition you could pay at a number of others schools. Not to mention, we will help you pay your way through college. Most of the Class of 2020 received financial aid.”
The financial aid package sounds like a blessing given the cost of a college education.
This is also very intriguing and encouraging.
“At Doane, you will never get lost in the mix. The average class size consists of 11 students, allowing for personal attention, more interaction, and the ability to know your professors on a first-name basis. Our service-focused Hansen Leadership Program, impressive research achievements, and rich tradition of Fulbright Scholars are a few indicators of how our academics harness greatness in our students.”
We love personal attention. Sounds like the incoming female grapplers will get all the training they need and more with that approach.
Let’s visit another university adding women’s wrestling to their athletic department.
You’ve heard the expression, “Don’t shoot the messenger”, so here we want to reward the messenger.
With a head lock.
On November 2, 2021, as reported by messengernews.net, “Female wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation, and now, Iowa Central will be a destination spot for college students. On Tuesday, night the Iowa Central Community College board formally approved women’s wrestling beginning in the fall of 2022. Women’s wrestling will be the 32nd sport and 22nd NJCAA sanctioned program for Iowa Central — the most in the nation for any junior college.”
We tip our hats to that news.
Let’s meet Iowa Central Community College.
Iowa Central Community College is a public community college in Fort Dodge, Iowa, with satellite campuses in Webster City and Storm Lake. The college was organized in 1966 on the foundation of three area junior colleges which had been operating since the 1920s by the local public school systems.
We appreciate that history but since life is about the moments and the present, time to visit their home and listen to the here and now.
At www.iowacentral.edu they educate, “When Iowa Central was founded in 1966, few people ever imagined that this small college in Iowa would one day garner national acclaim and be lauded as one of the top Iowa colleges.
Now, with over 100 programs to choose from and an array of student activities, Iowa Central provides an affordable and enriching alternative to four-year universities. You can attend classes at one of our five campus locations in Fort Dodge, Storm Lake, or Webster City for exceptional hands-on learning, while Iowa Central online classes offer a flexible distance-learning opportunity for many of our students.”
One hundred programs to choose from is an amazing statistic. Now women’s wrestling is one of those programs.
They add, “For all we serve, Iowa Central Community College strives to be the premier learning community, and college of choice, preparing the best citizens and workers for our region and beyond.
It is the philosophy of Iowa Central Community College, as a comprehensive community college, to aid in developing our citizens capabilities to the maximum. Iowa Central provides a flexible program to satisfy the needs of the individual and the needs of the community. An educational environment is planned to provide experiences for those who desire pre-professional courses, improvement of educational or technical skills, or developmental programs for self-enrichment.”
According to their site, they have a 16 to 1, student to teacher ratio which is exceptional.
There you have it.
Two more schools of higher learning are helping to lead women’s college wrestling to a higher realm.
They are not alone. The growth continues to be phenomenal.
When it comes to new women’s wrestling programs being added to the college ranks, please don’t blink. Please don’t snore. Stay wide awake.
So you can keep up.
