October 18, 2022,
We all love a good scare.
Especially if the movie involved is well done and there is a beautiful heroine.
Horror films can take on many themes and the “woman in peril” is a fascinating one.
Here are a few that we have enjoyed and sense that you will too.
Fear of Rain is a 2021 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Castille Landon and starring Katherine Heigl, Madison Iseman, Israel Broussard, Eugenie Bondurant, and Harry Connick Jr.
It received a limited theatrical release in the United States on February 12, 2021, by Lionsgate.
Here is the storyline.
17-year-old Rain Burroughs (Madison Iseman) suffers from early on-set schizophrenia and is admitted to hospital following a psychotic episode. She later reveals to her therapist that she has not been taking her medication as it interferes with her ability to paint.
Her mother Michelle (Katherine Heigl) and father John (Harry Connick Jr) are both very supportive, but when Rain returns to school, she is disowned by her friends who make fun of her mental illness.
However, a new boy, Caleb (Israel Broussard), notices her and they begin hanging out.
Good for Rain. She really needs him to help her distinguish between what is real and what is not.
One night while having a bad dream, Rain sees a vision of her teacher Ms. McConnell, who just happens to be her next door neighbor (imagine that), dancing with a small child. She wakes up and looks through her bedroom window into Ms. McConnell’s attic window, and sees the girl quickly snatched from view.
Ms. McConnell is the essence of creepy. Mercifully we didn’t have many teachers who looked and behaved like her.
Was that vision real or not real?
As Rain pursues her belief, it puts her life in peril and us on the edge of our seats.
The intriguing thing about the movie, that we thoroughly enjoyed, was we were caught off guard by what was real and what wasn’t.
Time for another.
We loved the fear factor that this sweet looking young girl appears to have a dark side.
For good reason.
Orphan is a 2009 psychological horror–thriller film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by David Leslie Johnson from a story by Alex Mace.
The film stars Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, CCH Pounder, Jimmy Bennett, Aryana Engineer, and Karel Roden. The plot centers on a couple who, after the death of their unborn child, adopt a psychopathic nine-year-old girl with a mysterious past.
Be careful what you ask for.
The film is an international co-production between the United States, Canada, Germany and France.
Orphan was released in the United States on July 24, 2009, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its dark humor, scares and Fuhrman’s performance as Esther, but criticized its formulaic screenplay, uneven pacing and two-hour runtime.
Look, you can’t always go by what the critics say.
The film grossed $78 million worldwide against a $20 million budget.
We can understand why.
We always enjoy what the movie critics at rogerebert.com have to say. They share, “After seeing “Orphan,” I now realize that Damien of “The Omen” was a model child. The Demon Seed was a bumper crop. Rosemary would have been happy to have this baby. Here is a shamelessly effective horror film based on the most diabolical of movie malefactors, a child.”
See what we mean?
It is a very different kind of what is real and what is not real storyline.
The villain is very real but you will be surprised who she turns out to really be.
It falls into the category of “I wish that you hadn’t told me that”.
Every little girl has her secrets. The difference here is that her secret could end your life.
Let’s try this one.
The Woman in the Window is a 2021 American psychological thriller film directed by Joe Wright from a screenplay by Tracy Letts, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by pseudonymous author A. J. Finn.
The film follows an agoraphobic woman (Amy Adams) who begins to spy on her new neighbors (Gary Oldman, Fred Hechinger, and Julianne Moore) and is witness to a crime in their apartment.
Okay, here we go again.
Did it happen or not?
Upon release the film received negative reviews from critics, with most criticism aimed at Wright’s direction and the screenplay, though the cast earned some praise.
Can’t always listen to the critics.
It wasn’t Gone With The Wind but it was entertaining.
Here is the storyline.
Child psychologist Anna Fox lives alone in a Manhattan brownstone after separating from her husband Edward.
He lives away with their daughter Olivia, but she talks to them on a daily basis.
Anna suffers from agoraphobia and her housebound state leads her to observe all of her neighbors from a second-story window, including the Russell family who recently moved in across the street.
She also takes a large number of medications and drinks alcohol daily. The perfect formula for people who see and hear things that may not be there.
One evening, Jane Russell visits Anna and they befriend one another.
She also meets Ethan, Jane’s teenage son, who suggests his father Alistair is abusive.
One night, Anna witnesses Jane being stabbed to death in the living room.
Or did she?
Jimmy Stewart (Rear Window) would be proud. Aw shucks.
She contacts the police but they do not believe her, claiming everyone in the family is fine.
They sure look fine to us.
Alistair arrives along with “Jane” who, to the shock of Anna, is a different woman from the one she met. She begins spying on the Russell family.
As you might guess, then the problems start.
For those of us in life who have had our challenges, while we haven’t experienced seeing things that are not there, some in our circle have had experiences where, under continued duress, they behaved in ways that might appear to be a little delusional.
Nothing like a well-done woman in peril movie to bring back some haunting memories.
