May 10, 2021,
Aren’t we supposed to be rooting for the good girls? All of the time?
We thought so, but so many are behaving so badly, it can get a little confusing.
There are a lot of hard luck stories out there that span decades but when do heroines cross the line and take up residence in villain village.
Hustlers is a 2019 American comedy drama written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, based on New York magazine‘s 2015 article “The Hustlers at Scores” by Jessica Pressler.
The film stars Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B.
Get this.
The plot follows a crew of strippers in New York City who begin to steal money by drugging stock traders and CEOs who visit their club, then running up their credit cards.
Seems downright criminal. Eye shadowy.
They’re not going to fall back on the tired old line of how they didn’t rip anyone off who didn’t deserve it are they?
And they’re the heroines in the land of heroin. The E must be added for entertainment purposes because heroes they are not.
No matter how pretty they are. Which they are. After all, they are strippers
First announced in February 2016, the film was originally set to be financed and distributed by Annapurna Pictures. However, amid financial trouble, Annapurna dropped the rights in October 2018. After STX Entertainment picked them up, much of the cast joined that fall through the following spring, and filming took place in New York City from March to May 2019.
Sounds complicated.
Like heroin.
Things can get really complicated there.
Hustlers had its world premiere on September 7, 2019, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 13, 2019.
Now they became heroines again, especially if you were one of the executives who took a massive risk to purchase the rights to an already troubled production. About heroines acting badly. Why?
The film grossed $157.6 million worldwide and received positive reviews from critics, with Ms. Lopez’s performance earning praise.
And as crazy as this all sounds, when watching the film, we found ourselves rooting for them.
Kind of. Sometimes.
Especially when they wore tight skirts. Which was often.
And super especially when Lili Reinhart is doing her thing. A thing she does well. Which is often. Many places. She is the heroine.
She’s blonde and gorgeous. Knew we had seen her before. Just couldn’t remember where. We wanted to remember. Badly. Without looking her up. You’ve played that memory game with yourself, right?
Where have I seen this babe before?
“Okay, I am happy with the way I look, but I have never, never, ever thought of myself as a ‘pretty girl.’ Honestly. When I read some of these scripts I’m sent, and they describe the heroine as ‘incredibly beautiful,’ I wonder why they sent it to me.”… Anna Kendrick
Lili Reinhart is an American actress, known for portraying Betty Cooper on The CW teen drama series Riverdale.
Ah yes. That’s where we saw her. Loved her there too. The series just didn’t stick with us and we tuned out.
After watching Lili in Hustlers, we might tune back in.
Our gorgeous beauty was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in the nearby town of Bay Village.
Bay Village is a city located west of Cleveland in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 15,651 at the 2010 census. In 2012, Family Circle Magazine ranked Bay Village as one of the 10 Best Towns for Families.
Another small town girl with a beautiful fresh face. Perfect to play the role of a heroine.
Lili developed a love for singing, acting, and dancing at the age of 10, and begged her mom to drive her to New York for auditions. She later moved to Los Angeles when she was 18 years old to pursue acting and almost gave up after five months.
Isn’t that a common story? A beautiful girl from the Mid-West moves to Hollywood with dreams of fame, fortune and roles on film as a heroine.
Who doesn’t snort heroin. Unless the script calls for it. Like Hustlers.
Unfortunately some small town beauties just end up on heroin or some other chemical. When they could have been heroines, if only they got the right break.
We’re glad we’re going to see more of Lili. Much more.
Here is a newer film on the screen.
Galveston is a 2018 American thriller film directed by Mélanie Laurent.
It stars Ben Foster and Elle Fanning. Lili plays the character Tiffany.
It’s complicated.
The master reviewers at rogerebert.com like complicated films when they are well-done and stocked with a heroine. Here, maybe two.
They analyze, “Still, despite its limitations, this is a consistently engrossing, sometimes powerful crime drama that feels rich despite its brief running time.”
Lili scores again.
On October 24, 2019, Lili announced that she partnered with American Express for the relaunch of its AmexGreen Card.
You know what green stands for here? Right? We didn’t. We thought it was just another green credit card used for many things (off the record, including snorting coke) material.
It has a different meaning. Well-meaning. Very meaningful. To our earth.
Earth to Lili.
The team at greenmatters.com allows Lili to enlighten and they then educate, “To be honest, I have lived my life maybe a little bit uneducated on the environmental issues that we’re obviously dealing with today. I think I’ve been a little sheltered from it,” Lili Reinhart tells me over the phone on Thursday, with a refreshing sense of honesty. The actress is famous for roles in Riverdale and Hustlers — and now, she is using her huge fan base for good. Reinhart has partnered with a major company to use her platform to advocate for the climate crisis, an issue she recently began learning about.”
Now that is what a heroine would do. That’s how you should wear green. Which is what Lili did for the green cause.
Also in October 2019, Ms. Reinhart became a spokesperson and ambassador for CoverGirl.
Going green and getting green. Lots of green here.
Ms. Erika Woods, Cover Girl’s vice president of marketing, stated “We’re excited for Lili to join our family as she embodies a woman who is unapologetically herself – she is authentic, talented, and truly lives by what she believes in.”
Unapologetically. Impressive. Makes us green with pride.
Lili plays a great heroine. Sometimes. When she’s not hustling.
If she continues to make the right ambassador and film career moves, she will be a heroine where it really counts.
Helping all of us to think about going green.
While she goes to the bank with a lot of green.
Speaking of chemicals, Lili stars in a real thought provoking tear jerker in Chemical Hearts.
Chemical Hearts is a 2020 American romantic drama film written, produced, and directed by Richard Tanne, based on the novel Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland. It was released on August 21, 2020, by Amazon Studios.
Here, Lili’s character is the new girl in town and has a lot to offer, both simple and complicated but always beautiful.
There are certain aspects to this, peel the artichoke, to get to the heart, teen drama that are fairly predictable.
She walks with a cane so we’re sensing car accident here. She is sullen and withdrawn so were sensing massive guilt too.
Was she drunk behind the wheel and accidentally killed a friend or someone she loved?
You have to keep peeling to find out why.
When it comes to any character that Lili plays, it’s worth the effort.
