March 2, 2024,
Can you have the life you want but not fully be the person you hope to be?
Easily, yes.
The life you want is stationary for the moment.
The person you hope to be, arguably, is always in transition.
Human imperfection are two words that rarely go together with accuracies.
Illusions, yes. Accuracy, mostly not.
Which should come first?
Hard to say, everyone’s life is different. So much is about foundation building.
Virtually everything has one.
When you look at the stars in the sky, they all had an original foundation for creation.
Walk down the street, every house, office building, restaurant or skyscraper has a foundation.
Therefore, it would be consistent that whatever life you have right now, was built by a foundation.
Here’s the deal. Some foundations are strong, others less so.
If you look to the future and desire a better life, don’t be disillusioned, begin building a foundation to get there.
Time for a few examples.
The key to laying a foundation for a better future often begins in the home. If you have a stable situation, wonderful. If you do not, then, even if you are young, you need to begin to take steps to try and get into and pay for college.
Don’t wait to just take out a lot of loans.
That will lay a foundation for a challenging future.
In terms of earnings, the Social Security Administration (ssa.gov) explains, “Men with bachelor’s degrees earn approximately $900,000 more in median lifetime earnings than high school graduates. Women with bachelor’s degrees earn $630,000 more. Men with graduate degrees earn $1.5 million more in median lifetime earnings than high school graduates. Women with graduate degrees earn $1.1 million more.”
In today’s world of rising rents and median home prices, that can be pretty substantial.
When you are young, think about the foundation you are laying to attend college. Your financial future could strongly depend upon it.
Then, think about what you want to major in. We suggest to major on a pathway that pays well. Not one where you just want to have a good time and fun experience in college but have few job prospects when you graduate. You should research the employment market demand and pay ranges.
We know of an example of someone who did that very well.
She is a doctor, and while we realize we are approaching rarified air, still, in general terms, this real life experience speaks to the point we are trying to make.
True story.
We have an associate who is the patient of a doctor, who practices under a family corporation, who works 4 days a week and is off three. She gets to spend time with her children, travel and make a lot of money.
When she was young, she and her family began to lay a powerful foundation to place her in a place to be the epitome of the person she wants to be and live the lifestyle she desires to have.
We applaud her.
Our point?
Start laying your foundation early.
Focus on a pathway where you can make a great living but not have to over work.
It can yield you a wonderful lifestyle.
A lifestyle like this one for example.
They are not doctors but primarily attorneys.
The Girlfriend Experience is an American anthology drama television series created, written, and directed by Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz that is broadcast on the premium cable network Starz.
The first season stars Riley Keough as Christine Reade, a law student intern who also works as a high-end escort.
So, the story itself was very interesting and really brought to life by Riley Keough. Tremendously so. She was believable and intense.
In terms of captivation, it was the lifestyle of the people she associated with. Where they worked, how they dined and how they negotiated. They operated on a higher level than most, in the upper floors of skyscrapers.
The foundation planning of most of their lives started very early.
It placed them in a position to meet the right people and live a full life.
That was truly a powerful aspect to the series.
To lay a foundation to become a better self and live a much better life, let’s walk over to the bookstore.
Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life Hardcover – September 20, 2016
By Bill Burnett (Author), Dave Evans (Author)
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • At last, a book that shows you how to build—design—a life you can thrive in, at any age or stage • “Life has questions. They have answers.” —The New York Times
“Designers create worlds and solve problems using design thinking. Look around your office or home—at the tablet or smartphone you may be holding or the chair you are sitting in. Everything in our lives was designed by someone. And every design starts with a problem that a designer or team of designers seeks to solve.
In this book, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans show us how design thinking can help us create a life that is both meaningful and fulfilling, regardless of who or where we are, what we do or have done for a living, or how young or old we are. The same design thinking responsible for amazing technology, products, and spaces can be used to design and build your career and your life, a life of fulfillment and joy, constantly creative and productive, one that always holds the possibility of surprise.”
Designing the best life for you. Very well said. We would add something important.
No matter how stable your life is, start early.
Be consistent and be in it for the long term.
The investment that you make in yourself, laying the groundwork for college, and most important, when you get there, choose a pathway where, when you graduate, there will be a high paying demand for it.
Will you be happy?
If not in the beginning, you can eventually get there through transfers, changing jobs and adding more education to your experience.
Once in the workforce, start saving money, even if you don’t know what to do with it yet. Don’t just spend it because you have it.
Save lots of money.
As you get older, you will begin to see what attracts you, what your calling may be and, most important, what lifestyle you desire.
Build a foundation early.
Right now.
It is never too early to start.
