November 14, 2021,
If it is yours, created by you, with love, like a first love, and you somehow lose it, for whatever reason, this year, next year or down the road, you will want it back.
Or buy it back.
Like Jessica Simpson did.
As reported on October 18, 2021, by people.com, “Jessica Simpson‘s back in charge of her billion-dollar business. After Sequential Brands Group Inc., the parent company of the Jessica Simpson Collection fashion line, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August, Jessica and her mom Tina Simpson have been hard at work regaining complete ownership of the brand.”
How well has Jessica done since her reality television days?
Her company is now worth well over a billion dollars.
How much did it cost her to get it back? As posted at bloomberg.com, “Jessica Simpson’s family offered to buy the singer-turned-fashion entrepreneur’s brand out of bankruptcy for $65 million.”
Our teenager is all grown up and appears to know a thing or two about making lots of money and saving it.
Hard to believe that Jessica is now 41.
Oh those were the days.
Jessica Simpson is an American singer, actress, fashion designer, and author.
Famous in all categories.
After performing in church choirs as a child, Jessica signed with Columbia Records in 1997, at the tender age of 17.
Her debut studio album, Sweet Kisses (1999), sold two million copies in the United States and saw the commercial success of the single “I Wanna Love You Forever“.
It was time to evolve.
Jessica adopted a more mature image for her second studio album, Irresistible (2001), and its title track became her second top 20 entry on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In This Skin (2003), Simpson’s third studio album, sold three million copies in the United States.
Jessica has listed Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Sade, and Whitney Houston as influences on her music.
You see, her spectacular hair is not the only platinum jewel in her bio.
About that television show that so many of us watched back in the day.
During her earlier career, Simpson became known for her relationship and later marriage to Nick Lachey, with whom she appeared on the MTV reality television series Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica between 2003 and 2005.
We watched the show. Constantly.
Aside from her musical pursuits, Simpson launched The Jessica Simpson Collection in 2005, a fashion line of clothing and other items. The brand has gone on to earn over $1 billion in revenue.
In terms of her fashion success, she also starred on the reality television series The Price of Beauty in 2010, was a judge on two seasons of Fashion Star between 2012 and 2013, and published a memoir in 2020, Open Book, which reached number one on The New York Times Best Seller list selling over 59,000 copies in its first week.
Jessica is now married to Eric Johnson, with whom she has three children.
The fashion success is what caught our eye and recaptured our Jessica Simpson fix.
Many celebrities have tried to launch fashion lines and have failed miserably. Off all of Jessica’s accomplishments, the fact that her company is a billion dollar empire is amazing.
Let’s visit her home for a closer look.
At jessicasimpson.com her team demonstrates her life is an “Open Book”, the title of her book. They share, “Jessica reveals for the first time her inner monologue and most intimate struggles. Guided by the journals she’s kept since age fifteen, and brimming with her unique humor and down-to-earth humanity, Open Book is as inspiring as it is entertaining. The Open Book Audiobook includes 6 exclusive new songs inspired by Open Book. Now a #1 New York Times Best Seller!”
As we said. Platinum here. Platinum there. Platinum, platinum, everywhere.
They love her at Macy’s. Check out the page they dedicated to her: https://www.macys.com/shop/b/jessica-simpson-clothing?id=71459
She is indeed well loved. Part of the reason for that is her willingness to give back to the community.
In April 2004, Jessica performed during the VH1‘s benefit concert Divas Live 2004 alongside Ashanti, Cyndi Lauper, Gladys Knight, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle, in support of the Save the Music Foundation.
Why save the music?
At www.savethemusic.org they educate, “As one of the top nonprofit music education organizations, we bring together a group of music and community members and other music nonprofit organizations to invest in schools and teachers upgrading their skills and capabilities. An example of this is in the city of Newark, NJ where we are entering the fifth year of a five-year project.
Together with the school district, the mayor’s office, a group of local art and music non-profits, several Newark-focused foundations, Queen Latifah and Wyclef Jean, we’ll have invested in 45+ schools and 98% of Newark students will have access to music education.”
Based upon a Newark case study, music in schools improves student, teacher, school and community outcomes.
Makes sense.
In May 2004, Simpson did a benefit concert to help the Skin Care Foundation.
In March 2007, Simpson donated a new Chrysler minivan to the Elim orphanage in Nuevo Laredo.
Jessica is Soles4Souls‘s Ambassador where she participated in autographing shoes to donate the money from communities across the United States.
Soles4Souls is a non-profit headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.
It receives shoe and clothing donations from individuals, community donation drives, and retailers. Then, Soles4Souls distributes the donated items to various programs around the world to help those in need. Items are repurposed either to provide relief or to help create jobs through the selling of clothes or shoes in developing countries.
Soles4Souls was founded after a group of executives from the shoe industry donated shoes to survivors of a 2014 tsunami then to survivors of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Simpson also works with Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Must admit, back in her reality television days, we knew she was talented and absolutely beautiful, very entertaining too, but must admit we didn’t see all of this in her future.
If you were watching her back then, did you?
The other interesting aspect to this is, in our minds, she is just getting started. We really feel that. Now that she has her clothing empire back all to herself, where she will take it is anyone’s guess but we are guessing far skyward with no ceiling.
Okay, that was our 2021 Jessica Simpson update.
We will stay alert. Stay styling.
We’re certain the best in fashion is yet to come.
