December 18, 2023,
Keep your chin up.
Maintain a wonderful smile.
Think positive.
In this time period, it is getting harder to do so.
Millions around the globe have been displaced from their homes as democracies crumble. Multiple major wars rage, famine flourishes, homeless people are everywhere, especially in large cities, hatred and divisions are on the rise, gun violence and mass shootings are commonplace and you could probably add more challenges.
But don’t’.
Let’s try and be positive.
Optimistic even.
Sometimes it is the only thing that keeps us going.
It can have good effects upon us.
The team at psychologytoday.com express, “By focusing on the positive aspects of your experiences, you can improve your mood, boost your self-esteem, and enhance your overall well-being.”
We will raise our glass to that.
And turn on the TV.
One show that exemplifies the position spirit is Emily In Paris and according to online sources, the show is about to be renewed for a fourth season.
We’ll tip our hat to that.
Emily in Paris is an American romantic comedy-drama television series created by Darren Star for Netflix.
Here comes the fun part.
Set in Paris, the series stars Lily Collins as an aspiring marketing executive Emily Cooper, an American who moves to France to provide an American point of view to a French marketing firm.
There, she struggles to succeed in the workplace while searching for love and experiencing a culture clash with her conventional Midwestern U.S. upbringing.
She must learn to adapt and overcome the challenges that arise within her work, love life, and friendships.
That’s an understatement.
She learns to balance her work-life with her personal-life all while attempting to fit in with the Paris lifestyle.
Lots of challenges there but what we love so much about Emily is that she meets those challenges with a positive spirit and as she overcomes them, she grows as a person.
We’re not sure we’ve ever seen any character smile so much.
It is very uplifting.
There is a school of thinking that speaks to that mindset.
Positive psychology studies the conditions that contribute to the optimal functioning of people, groups, and institutions. It studies “positive subjective experience, positive individual traits, and positive institutions… it aims to improve quality of life.”
Makes good sense.
Positive psychologists suggest a number of factors that may contribute to happiness and subjective well-being, for example: social ties with a spouse, family, friends, colleagues, and wider networks; membership in clubs or social organizations; physical exercise; and the practice of meditation.
The human experience seems to take flight and soar when a person has many positive ties to others.
Some people feel that being optimistic and relentlessly positive is like sticking your head in the sand. You are evading real life.
To some degree that might be true unless you get involved in positive processes or walk uplifting pathways to help solve the world’s problems.
What we seem to be saying is, when you can be positive, it is usually best for everyone.
Which brings us to a closer focus on being optimistic.
Optimism is an attitude reflecting a belief or hope that the outcome of some specific endeavor, or outcomes in general, will be positive, favorable, and desirable.
A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass filled with water to the halfway point: an optimist is said to see the glass as half full, while a pessimist sees the glass as half empty.
To be optimistic, in the typical sense of the word, is to expect the best possible outcome from any given situation.
This is usually referred to in psychology as dispositional optimism. It reflects a belief that future conditions will work out for the best. As a trait, it fosters resilience in the face of stress.
Both theories appear to foster the idea that so much of our life experience will depend on if we are positive and optimistic.
Proof?
Time to walk over to the bookstore.

The Power of Optimism Paperback – May 28, 2021
By The Editors of Meredith (Author)
Having a positive outlook translates into a happier and healthier life – and it’s not as elusive as you might think.
Though there is evidence that optimism has biological and genetic roots, research has shown that we can shape our attitude to see the best possible outcomes in life, cultivating happiness, gratitude, and resilience while reducing stress and anxiety. And for those who may see the glass as half full, it is possible that pessimistic thinking can actually lead to positive outcomes.
This special issue looks at the benefits of an optimistic mindset in all aspects of life, how to frame everyday thoughts in a favorable light, and how to maximize positive inclinations.”
Does indeed sound very beneficial.
As we go through life in this challenging time period, so much of our experiences will depend upon the choices and decisions we make.
The situations out of our control will occur. We cannot change that.
How we respond to it is within out control.
Being positive and optimistic in our thinking and behavior will tend to lead to much better outcomes for all involved.
Especially for you.
