March 29, 2021,
Everyone loves a comeback.
Especially in a Hollywood movie.
Especially in Hollywood when the movie is about them.
After the COVID crisis which devastated box office returns, Hollywood films are performing better at movie theaters.
It’s turning nobodies into somebodies.
As posted at hollywoodreporter.com, “Bob Odenkirk’s new action revenge-thriller Nobody was a somebody at the weekend box office, opening to a pleasing $6.7 million domestically as more theaters in Los Angeles and the rest of West Coast reopen.”
The film has gotten a lot of buzz, so what’s it all about Alfie?
Nobody is a 2021 American action thriller film directed by Ilya Naishuller and written by Derek Kolstad.
The film stars Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, RZA, Aleksei Serebryakov, and Christopher Lloyd, and follows a man who helps a stranger being harassed by a group of men, only to become the target of a vengeful drug lord.
Ouch.
It is honorable to be a Good Samaritan but is it wise?
Here is what the master reviewers at rogerebert.com expressed about Nobody, something that they just wouldn’t say about anybody, “The bus scene that initiates the real action of “Nobody” is the kind of action choreography work of art that will have devoted audiences applauding at screenings for years to come.”
Now that is something that everybody could get into and apparently already have.
Loving the comeback theme. Yes we are.
Then there is Godzilla Vs Kong.
We know it is a story that has been told a number of times before but we still can’t get enough of it. Just place a different spin on it and we’re anxiously waiting, popcorn in hand.
According to deadline.com, “Warner Bros/Legendary’s Godzilla Vs Kong has set a new benchmark for the biggest international box office debut by a Hollywood film during the pandemic era with an estimated $121.8M from 38 overseas markets.”
We’re so happy to see that. Anything that gets us closer to pre-COVID normal is a blessing.
The team at https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2564993/godzilla-vs-kongs-crazy-opening-china-box-office-is-back-king-of-the-monsters add, “While it’s bit too early to know if Godzilla vs. Kong will in fact pull these huge numbers at China’s box office, it certainly looks like it’s on track to become the most-successful Hollywood movie since COVID-19 in the offshore market.”
The hope is that the number of people getting vaccinated continues to rise. Hope springs eternal.
If that happens, more Hollywood comebacks could be in the works where they are the star of their own story.
Okay, we are ready to applaud.

NEW YORK, March 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — IMAX (NYSE: IMAX) delivered a roaring international debut for “Godzilla vs. Kong,” earning $12.4 million for the weekend across 891 screens in 40 markets worldwide. In a positive sign as the summer blockbuster season approaches, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ epic kaiju clash scored the biggest opening weekend in IMAX for a Hollywood film since December 2019.
China led the way as the highest grossing IMAX market with $9.4 million in weekend box office — good for 14% of the film’s total Chinese box office on only 1% of screens in the market. Worldwide, IMAX delivered 10% of the film’s weekend box office despite accounting for just 1% of screens — continuing IMAX’s history of strong market share with the “Monsterverse” franchise.
“Godzilla vs. Kong” expands to at least 1170 IMAX screens worldwide on March 31 when it debuts in North America — where pre-sales have been brisk with multiple shows already sold out across top-performing IMAX locations.
“‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible and audiences worldwide are answering the call — continuing to drive market share gains for IMAX and proving there is real business to be done for Hollywood blockbusters,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. “We are particularly encouraged by the film’s strong debut in China, where audiences turned out in a big way for this Hollywood franchise.”
“Godzilla vs. Kong” currently stands as king among the films in the “Monsterverse,” winning the franchise’s biggest IMAX opening weekend in thirteen markets, including China, India, and Russia. In China, IMAX screens are featured in each of the film’s top ten highest grossing theaters. Despite capacity limitations of up to 50%, numerous markets delivered healthy per screen averages in IMAX theaters, including Australia ($63K), Hong Kong ($51K), Saudi Arabia ($43K), Thailand ($31K), UAE ($21K) and Singapore ($21K).
