November 9, 2023,
Just when the world becomes absorbed with one major conflict, another one rears its ugly head.
As the average citizen, there is not much that we can do about it.
We watch.
We pray.
We wait.
Bad as that is, we can learn and reflect in our own personal lives how to avoid and prevent conflict.
It is all about conflict resolution.
Conflict resolution is conceptualized as the methods and processes involved in facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict and retribution.
Committed group members attempt to resolve group conflicts by actively communicating information about their conflicting motives or ideologies to the rest of group. In other words, their intentions, reasons for holding certain beliefs and by engaging in collective negotiation.
Ultimately a wide range of methods and procedures for addressing conflict exist, including negotiation, mediation, mediation-arbitration, diplomacy, and creative peacebuilding.
Makes perfect sense.
We often love to turn to film and television to learn. Especially if the show appears to teach us techniques at a very high level. We really respected and admired this show.
Ransom is an internationally co-produced drama television series created by David Vainola and produced by Frank Spotnitz, starring Luke Roberts, that began airing on CBS.
Ordered straight-to-series with 13 episodes on June 6, 2016, the series is a co-production between Canada’s Global, France’s TF1, the United States’ CBS, and Germany’s RTL, while the latter is airing the series on its sister network VOX.
Now for the storyline.
The series follows Eric Beaumont, an experienced crisis and hostage negotiator, and his team, who solve kidnap and ransom cases involving the most dangerous criminals in the world.
The series is inspired by the real life negotiators Laurent Combalbert and Marwan Mery.
No wonder we learned so much from Eric’s approach. If you decide to stream this one, you most likely will learn much too.
Without the stress.
We have an associate in our circle who goes through a process before he decides to engage in a conflicting process.
Here are some questions he asks.
How important is this?
Are others being affected by activity that I view as out of line or inappropriate and if I don’t act, how will they be affected?
Will it resolve itself, burn out as it were, if I do nothing?
Do I need to get others involved?
Am I exaggerating how extensive this is?
If I don’t act, will the person or persons initiating the bad behavior continue or did they just want to blow off some steam.
Yes, he actually does ask himself these questions before he acts. Even once he acts, he exercises patience, listening and above all, self-control.
What do you think about that?
Let’s walk over to the bookstore.
The Dynamics of Conflict: A Guide to Engagement and Intervention, 2nd Edition 2nd Edition
By Mayer (Author)
The Dynamics of Conflict
“When it was published in 2000, Bernie Mayer’s The Dynamics of Conflict Resolution quickly became one of the seminal works in the conflict resolution field. The book bridged the gap between abstract theoretical approaches and practical handbooks and became an immensely valuable and accessible resource for experienced and novice practitioners, as well as for professors and students of conflict management who needed a deep yet practical view of conflict and methods for dealing with it.
The Dynamics of Conflict is the second edition of Mayer’s classic book. While building on the strengths of the first edition, this thoroughly revised and updated book keeps pace with the most current trends and research in the field and explores four key concepts: interactional dynamics, system dynamics, culture and conflict, and conflict engagement. Like the first edition, the focus of the new edition is on the ways we can productively think about conflict and conflict intervention, rather than on specific techniques and processes. Mayer presents ideas about conflict as a set of conceptual tools that build on one another and contribute to a multifaceted view of conflict and conflict intervention but that also stand on their own.
Filled with illustrative examples, the book draws from the author’s thirty years of experience with interpersonal, family, community, organizational, labor management, environmental, public policy, and international disputes and includes instances of conflicts that have been in the news. In addition, this vital resource contains information on the most important work that has been done in the past decade on culture, systems, and conflict engagement and shows how conflict concepts apply to new technologies such as online communication and conflict resolution efforts on the Web.
In the concluding chapter Mayer explores how conflict intervention efforts fit into more general values about peace, democracy, and social justice, and the personal impact that conflict work as a field has on conflict specialists.”
We love the variety of options. Which one speaks closest to an area you feel you need to address?
One more.
