February 23, 2024,
We are best when we function.
If you are going to function, be high functioning.
One pathway that affects virtually everything else that we do, which allows us to function at a high level, is our fitness.
There are many names for that.
Here is one that stands out.
Functional Fitness.
The team at opexfit.com educate, “Functional fitness is a classification of training that prepares the body for real-life movements and activities.”
For anyone who has ever pulled a back muscle, this type of training seems ideal.
Stated another way, functional fitness is focused on building a body capable of performing real life activities in real life positions and situations as opposed to lifting a certain amount of weight in an idealized posture created by a gym machine.
Life is rarely idealized. True?
This genre of fitness is becoming so popular, a movie was made about it.
The informative film source imdb.com relates, “This documentary takes a raw and introspective look into the world of Functional Fitness, illustrating what this growing trend is all about. Functional Fitness follows the stories of gym owners, athletes, and those just beginning their fitness journey. An inspiring film that explores how this fitness phenomenon has enhanced the lives of so many people.”
Applause for that.
Big bonus.
The movie features Anníe Mist Þórisdóttir.
Annie is a professional CrossFit athlete from Reykjavík, Iceland.
She is the co-owner of CrossFit Reykjavik, where she also coaches and trains.
Wish we were there.
Drum roll please. Annie is the first woman to win the CrossFit Games twice (in 2011 and 2012).
She placed second in the 2010 and 2014 CrossFit Games. She did not compete in 2013 due to injury, and dropped out of the 2015 CrossFit Games early due to heat stroke.
She placed third in the 2017 and 2021 CrossFit Games.
Annie trains four hours per day, six days per week, and also has experience as a gymnast (eight years), ballet dancer (two years), and pole vaulter (two years).
What a specimen.
In the dynamic film she is joined by Talayna Fortunato who describes herself as a physical therapist with a CrossFit habit.
She is a former college gymnast and heptathlete.
Fantastic influencers.
Some of functional fitness can be participated in within a group setting which can make the experience more enjoyable and help you build workout contacts.
The informative team at psychologytoday.com share, “Support groups can be a powerful way for participants to gain emotional support and validation, strengthen social connections, experience stress reduction, learn new coping skills, discover new information about themselves, and feel empowered.”
Sounds functionally great.
Working out in group settings is becoming more popular as well.
There is a fitness company that is enhancing Group Fitness by redefining it.
It is a method you should probably become more familiar with.
Check it out.
