January 3, 2022,
We bump into them every day.
No choice.
They are always there. Walking or running past. Sitting near us while we dine. Strolling past us in the mall.
We can’t get away from.
Never will.
Who are they?
People you have never met before.
And in some cases, need to.
That is when the first impression clause kicks in.
In many ways, when you know that you are going to meet a person for the first time, imagine yourself as a blank canvass.
They are the artist with the painter’s brush.
Based upon the way you dress, style your hair, cleanse your body, utilize facial expressions, communicate and listen, what will your portrait look like?
From their eyes.
All of us are involved in first impressions in virtually every aspects of our lives, including what we watch on television or film.
FBI: International is an American crime television series that debuted on CBS during the 2021–22 television season. It is the second spin-off from Dick Wolf‘s drama FBI and the third series in the FBI franchise. The series premiered on September 21, 2021. In October 2021, the series was given a full season order.
Great to know. Glad of it.
It made a great first impression.
One of the actresses in the series that made that so, for us, is Christiane Paul.
Christiane Paul is a German film, television and stage actress.
Ms. Paul first worked as a model for magazines such as Bravo.
She was 17 when she obtained her first leading role in the film Deutschfieber .
Prior to her acting career (she has no formal acting training), she studied medicine and successfully completed her studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin; however, she gave up medicine in 2006.
Apparently it didn’t make a lasting impression.
Let’s think about you. About us.
How can we make a great first impression in the various important scenarios we find ourselves in?
Let’s turn to literature.
First Impressions: What You Don’t Know About How Others See You Paperback – March 29, 2005
By Ann Demarais Ph.D. (Author), Valerie White Ph.D. (Author)
“What kind of first impression do you make? A first impression is the most important impression you’ll ever make—and you get only one chance to make it. Business deals can be made or broken, first dates become second dates or not, friendships are created or fail to form; everything hinges on that all-important initial encounter. And yet most of us don’t know how we’re really seen by others. Many of us don’t know how to make a good impression.
Wouldn’t you like others to see you as confident, interesting, attractive, and sincere? Ann Demarais, Ph.D., and Valerie White, Ph.D., consultants to many Fortune 100 companies as well as creators of First Impressions, Inc., a New York–based dating and consulting firm, offer you the keys to putting your best self forward in any new situation, whether you want to strike up a conversation at a party or are meeting a blind date or a new business client.
You’ll learn to see yourself as others see you, and how to tweak your style to create the impression that reflects the real you. Breaking down a successful first impression into its seven fundamentals, the authors show you how to master these principles so that you can make the best first impression. They also show how to avoid common misunderstandings that leave others with a bad impression, how to reveal the four universal social gifts, and they outline practical steps you can take to enhance your personal charm.
Informative and filled with enlightening research studies, do-it-yourself checklist reviews, and dozens of helpful case histories, First Impressions is a fun, groundbreaking, and long-overdue guide to the most important moment of virtually any relationship: the first.”
Sounds very effective.
Now for some fun.
First Impressions Kindle Edition
By Nora Roberts (Author) Format: Kindle Edition
Overwhelmed by the neighborly attentions of the cheerful and vivacious “girl next door,” a man burned by love finds his passions reigniting in #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts’s First Impressions.
“Entrepreneur Vance Banning took a residence in rural Maryland to escape business pressures—and relationships with women pursuing his bank account. To the community, he’s a moody, out-of-work carpenter with a chip on his shoulder. To next door neighbor Shane Abbott, he’s just a man who needs a little kindness in his life. Vance’s suspicions of the stunning beauty’s intense interest in him start to fade when he realizes Shane’s compassion is honest and joyful—giving his heart permission to experience true love.”
Sounds like this one could turn into a movie.
As you might guess, how to make a great first impression can be a very subjective enlightenment.
We have a visiting writer with another view.
How to Give a Winning First Impression Now
How to give a winning first impression now and every time can be learned. Here are 5 “how to” tips to give a positive first impression.
When it comes to modern-day society and life, whether you are in a business meeting or a social encounter, your very first impression is incredibly important.
When people first meet you, they will judge and remember you by that mental picture they take.
Many people make first impression mistakes without even knowing it. In this post, we share five key how to tips to help you give a winning first impression now.
Tip #1: Give a Winning First Impression Start With a Smile
The very first thing you should do to make people comfortable around you is to smile.
A smile takes away tension. It tells other people that you are happy. Smiles help people feel comfortable. Smiles are contagious!
Smiling exudes self-confidence. So when you first meet someone, smile.
Tip #2: Dress for the Occasion
The second way to give a winning first impression is to dress for the occasion.
You do not have to go out and buy the latest, most expensive, designer clothes. The price of your clothing does not really matter.
When it comes to making a first impression at work, for example, you don’t want to overdo your look. But you also don’t want to look sloppy. The clothing you wear reflects your personality. How you dress will impact how people perceive you.
Tip #3: Use The Other Person’s Name But Don’t Overdo It
To give a winning first impression, be careful not to overuse someone’s name.
This is not suggesting you not repeat someone’s first name. Addressing someone by name after introductions is actually a good thing to do; especially if it is uncommon to you. What we are saying is do not over do it.
Tip #4: Be a Great Listener
The fourth thing you can do that will help you with how to give a winning first impression is to be a great listener.
Being an active listener is a skill. However, it is a wonderful skill when it comes to meeting people and getting them to like you.
Why?
Because most people like to talk about themselves. Their interest is in what they have to say.
As a great listener your task is getting the new person to elaborate on their interests. Their personal opinions will make them feel more comfortable around you.
Active listening tips include giving short comments like, “Oh interesting” or “I agree“.
Bonding during the first few minutes of interaction will make people like you more.
Tip #5: Let Other People be the Center of Attraction
The fifth suggestion on how to give a winning first impression is let other people be the center of attention.
In making a good first impression at work, let the other person understand and feel as if they are more important. Do not dominate the conversation. Do a lot of listening. Do not talk about yourself unless asked. This may seem like a different technique but it works wonders in the world of business as well as meeting people in your after-work life.
Throughout your day-to-day activities knowing how to give a winning first impression is integral when it comes to having relationships, making new friends, job interviews, and getting along with other people.
