Salsa Dancing – 5 Simple Ways That This Time Next Month You Could Call Yourself A Dancer
By Justin Hyne
I have always said, and I stand by it, that if you can clap in time to music then there’s no reason why you can’t be salsa dancing by this time next month. But just one month I hear you cry! Don’t be stupid, I’ve never danced before in my life, how could I be salsa dancing by next month? Well if you follow the 5 tips I give you below then you better start changing your opinion about what is possible.
5 Ways To Be Salsa Dancing By Next Month
- Find your ‘why’
2. Find the right club and teacher
3. Commit to doing at least one class per week
4. Learn the way you want to
5. Socialize And Dance
Let’s cover each of these in more detail below to give you some personal insights which will help you out.
-
Find Your ‘Why’
This may sound a bit ethereal but procrastination is the biggest enemy against you right now. You need to have a big enough ‘why’ to get good at anything in life and so before you get started with salsa dancing you need to find your own ‘why’ and use it as your motivator.
When I use the term ‘why’ I am referring to your reason why you want to learn salsa dancing. In life people either move towards pleasure or away from pain, they are the two motivators so try and use them to find your reason and make it strong enough to stick with it. Maybe you’ve always dreamed about being able to dance and decided now is the time or maybe you’re sick of people telling you that you can’t dance or that you would never be good at it. Whatever your reason try and embed your emotions into it and you’ll be more inclined to stick with it.
-
Find the right club and teacher
There are going to be many different clubs that you could go to and many different teachers that you could choose. The key here is that pretty much every club is teaching the same thing so you simply want to pick a club and teacher that you resonate with and someone who teaches in a way that you can learn. I would suggest that if you’ve tried salsa dancing before without success then it was down to the fact that you didn’t resonate with the teacher and not because you can’t dance despite what they or anyone else may have told you.
-
Commit To Doing At Least One Class Per Week
Constant action is the key to success in life and so once you start you need to commit to at least one class per week and preferably two. This will fast track your learning and allow you to be salsa dancing by this time next month. You also need to take daily action and practice what you have learnt each and every day. If you do this then the information will always be fresh in your head and your body will start to build up what is called muscle memory and so after time you will start to do things automatically without having to think about them; this is simply created with time and daily practice.
-
Learn The Way You Want To
We all learn in different ways, some of us by seeing, some of us by hearing and others by feeling. You need to make sure that you learn the way you want to and get the teacher to adapt to you because there will be other people who will benefit also. What I mean by this is that if you are a visual learner then ask the teacher to demonstrate the technique again until you are happy. If you learn by listening then ask them to explain it again in more detail. Likewise if you learn through feeling then ask for them to demonstrate on you so that you can feel how the technique works. In general it’s good to get a combination of all three of them but try and focus on the one that works for you best.
-
Socialize And Dance
It is so important to make sure you get to know people in your club and socialize with them wherever possible. Salsa dancing is a very social activity and people want to have fun as well as learn and ultimately they will feel more comfortable asking you to dance or accepting your dance request if they already know who you are. You also need to ask people to dance as much as you can and get out there and make mistakes. Most people are so worried about doing something wrong that they end up stalling before they start. You will learn quickest by making mistakes and learning from them and the only real way to do it is to get out there on the dance floor and give it a go; I guarantee other beginners will be looking at you thinking ‘I wish I had the confidence to do that’
