August 20, 2024,
There is nothing like big dreams that begin certain important long-term life endeavors.
Once the process starts, there are big dreams for everyone, in part due to the massive amounts of sacrifices and preparation that go into it. The stakes are high. If expectations are not met, it will be extremely painful.
In high school, collegiate and pro football, this happens all of the time.
Hard Knocks is a reality sports documentary television series produced by NFL Films and HBO.
The series first broadcast in 2001.
The show typically follows a National Football League (NFL) team through its training camp and covers the team’s preparation for the upcoming football season.
It had such success, there were additional programming.
Beginning in 2021, the show has also dedicated an additional season of television to following an additional team throughout the NFL regular season. Followed by an additional season to following another team through the NFL offseason starting in 2024.
It is well worth watching.
The series depicts the personal and professional lives of players, coaches, and staff, including their family life, position battles, and even inside jokes and pranks. It particularly focuses on rookies‘ adjustments to playing in the NFL, usually with emphasis on the team’s most recent top draft pick.
It usually also chooses to focus on undrafted and journeyman players who are attempting to make the team.
The season we enjoyed greatly was the 2023 season for the New York Jets.
The 2023 season was the New York Jets‘ 54th season in the National Football League (NFL), their 64th overall, their fifth under general manager Joe Douglas and their third under head coach Robert Saleh.
With the acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers in an offseason trade with the Green Bay Packers, expectations were high.
Our expectations were very high with the great Aaron Rodgers under center. Could this be the year that the Jets make it to the Super Bowl?
Then, on opening night, Aaron led the Jets out of the tunnel, complete with the American flag in tow, and after only four snaps, he tore his Achilles tendon.
Oh, no.
So much for big dreams and high expectations.
Now, reality sets in.
The season, which was entered with Super Bowl aspirations, was a major disappointment for the team, finishing at 7–10 for the second consecutive season, and failing to improve on their record from 2022. It was also the Jets’ fourth consecutive season with at least ten losses.
Then there are TV series.
Going into the season, there are huge dreams and great expectations. Will it turn the featured actor into a star? We can just see them falling asleep at night and dreaming about their Oscar acceptance speech.
When we first saw this one, and binged watched, we were certain it would last.
Gypsy is an American psychological thriller web television series created by Lisa Rubin for Netflix.
Naomi Watts stars as Jean Holloway, a psychologist who secretly infiltrates the private lives of her patients. Billy Crudup co-stars as her husband Michael.
The first season comprises 10 episodes and was released on June 30, 2017.
Stevie Nicks re-recorded an acoustic version of her Fleetwood Mac song “Gypsy” to serve as the show’s theme song. Nice touch.
Academy Award-nominee Naomi Watts stars in this Netflix-original psychological thriller as Jean, a therapist in New York with a successful practice and a life that seems picturesque.
Or at least we thought so.
Well, we still think so. The problem is she doesn’t think so nor recognize what an incredible life that she has.
Why place a life that most of us would dream of at risk? Maybe that’s the thrill.
As Jean starts to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives, the borders of her professional life and personal fantasies become blurred. Jean descends into a world where reality and the forces of her desires, are disastrously at odds, which impacts her life and the lives of those around her.
We were waiting for this one to blow up in her face but she always seemed to be one step ahead of the grenade while planting one foot one inch away from the landmine.
Tricky business indeed in high heels.
She’s not the heroine but Naomi’s heroic effort makes this one binge watch worthy.
We were greatly disappointed the series was not renewed by Netflix for a second season.
Accepting reality is extremely hard. Especially in artistic endeavors.
Then, there are relationships. Someone mesmerizing began flirting with you. You can’t help it but you fell in love. You hope it is reciprocal but it is not. Whatever you do, don’t start stalking them.
We loved this series too.
Friendzone is a dating relationship reality television series produced by 495 Productions, airing on MTV.
The show follows people who have romantic feelings for one of their friends. Sally Ann Salsano created the show based upon one of her personal experiences. The theme song is “Two Hearts” by Keegan DeWitt.
Each episode of Friendzone features two stories.
In each story, the person with romantic feelings (the crusher) wants to express these feelings to the target of his or her feelings for the crushee.
At the very beginning of the show, both crushers featured are introduced and each mentions their crushee.
It was fun to watch, entering each episode with high expectations, or at least hopeful ones, then, sometimes it works out and unfortunately, sometimes it doesn’t. There were some tear jerking moments.
The show ended on December 2, 2014.
In this short life, we all have our dreams. Often those dreams are worth fighting for, right up until there is absolutely no hope of fulfilling them. You have to keep trying.
It is not like the sports world where there are clear endings. When the season is over, your record is what it is. Once you are cut or retire, most times it is best to accept that. Accept reality.
But in everyday life, with your hopes and dreams, our suggestion?
Delay reality for as long as you can.
