August 11, 2023,
Coffee shops, for some, are just a place to get a cup of coffee fast and jumpstart their work day.
For others, and we know some, it is a place to relax, socialize and feel bright.
One thing about coffee that has affected both groups, is the price.
The last time we were there, less than a week ago, the prices appear to have really gone up.
As reported by businessinsider.com, “At coffee shops nationwide, a single cup of coffee now costs $4.90 on average, a 7.6% increase from this time last year, according to NPD Group data cited by The Wall Street Journal.”
Now, unless we’re missing something, that must be the cost of plain black coffee, because the prices we saw were closer to $15-$18 per cup.
Granted, they were large cups, but those were the prices. What could be a major reason for the jump?
Over 900 species of insect have been recorded as pests of coffee crops worldwide. Of these, over a third are beetles, and over a quarter are bugs.
Some 20 species of nematodes, 9 species of mites, and several snails and slugs also attack the crop. Birds and rodents sometimes eat coffee berries.
To some degree, those elements are always a factor, so there must be an additional reason that coffee production has been affected.
Look towards the sky.
According to the informative source barchart.com, “The U.S. Climate Prediction Center said today that sea surface temperatures across the equatorial Pacific Ocean had risen 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal, and wind patterns have changed to the point where El Nino criteria have been met. An El Nino pattern typically brings heavy rains to Brazil and drought to India, negatively impacting coffee crop production.”
We’re not sure it is connected, but we know here in Northern California, we had the mildest summer that we can remember. June 2023, was barely hot at all.
An additional source ourworld.unu.edu adds, “In recent days Arabica coffee beans — by far the most popular variety of coffee — have been fetching around US$2 per pound on the world market. That’s nearly double the price of a year ago.”
The article goes on to express that a prolonged period of drought and some unseasonably cold weather in Vietnam, which is the world’s second biggest coffee-producer, has reduced crop forecasts for robusta beans, mainly used for instant coffee.
Almost drought conditions have also hit coffee-producing areas in East Africa.
This news affects so many, including us.
Darkly colored, bitter, and slightly acidic, coffee has a stimulating effect on humans, primarily due to its caffeine content. It has the highest sales in the world market for hot drinks
One associate has considered purchasing a fancy coffee maker, and beyond our social gatherings, will make coffee at home.
She is not alone in that thinking.
As posted by driveresearch.com, “68% of American coffee drinkers make coffee at home on a daily basis, with 15% making it at home 1 to 3 days a week. Others make it at home 4 to 6 days a week.”
As you might guess, there are endless coffee makers to choose from, especially if you go to Amazon.
We came across another group who has a coffeemaker that just might make your day.
Check it out.
