August 8, 2022,
The quest for spiritual enlightenment is not a new thing.
People have been seeking that out for thousands of years.
In modern times, it just seems to take on a new sheen.
Not just, what is the meaning of life. More like, what is the meaning of my life.
The societal reasons for it tend to have the usual suspects. The decline in attending organized religion or believing in God. The breakdown in the family. National ills like high rent, expensive housing and the swift destruction of the earth.
We could add a few more that speak to our quest. We sense you could add more yourself.
As far as those usual suspects, while in times past, they may have worked to some degree, with side effects, everyone wasn’t remotely happy.
Especially when inside some of those institutions there was severe abuse. They just don’t appear to be working anymore.
They just don’t.
We often told our story about how we left organized religion and why. Primarily due to it proving false when it came to money verses principal. It was very clear what the priority was.
We could go on, but we won’t.
This disenchantment with tradition has led us to follow beautiful young women, out into the wilderness, where they are searching for something important to them that they didn’t appear to find back in civilization.
They tend to be highly educated, intelligent and could be extremely successful at whatever they choose to pursue.
And yet, they are often alone, out in the middle of nowhere.
Appealing to all of us to watch.
Still, nowhere to us, is absolutely somewhere important to them. One of these female adventurers is Christian Schaffer.
Her obvious beauty can be beguiling.
Her high intelligence, impressive.
Her follow through on what needs to be done, admirable.
Her ability to take risks, inspiring.
But there is something far deeper, richer, spiritual and more meaningful going on. And you know what we suspect?
She has not completely figured it out yet, but what she has discerned is fascinating.
We’re patient.
Christian Schaffer is a Van Life Adventurer, YouTuber and Social Media Influencer telling soul stirring tales and portraying life on the road in all its freshness and sunrise glory.
At her YouTube channel she expresses, “As of May 2021, I’ve been living on the road full-time for three years as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. Here’s a tour of my current tiny home on wheels after 14 months in an SUV and two years in a custom built Ram Promaster. My ultimate goal here is to inspire you to step outside your comfort zone by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey.”
Good job Christian.
We are inspired.
Her story is a layered one and worth peeling back the fresh forest golden leafs, one by one.
Let’s get started.
This video is a great starting place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_p31M_EXLM
Here Christian explains how she has designed, built, installed and decorated the van from its humble empty cargo van beginnings. It is well stocked and tastefully laid out. From refrigeration to distressed paint, Christian seems to have thought of everything.
Including “Leave No Trace” principles.
Have you heard of them? The National Park Service is happy to explain.
At nps.gov they educate, “Each of us plays a vital role in protecting our national parks. As we spend time outdoors, in the natural world and in wilderness, it’s important to be conscious of the effects our actions may have on plants, animals, other people, and even entire ecosystems. Following the Leave No Trace Seven Principles, summarized below, can help us minimize those impacts. They can be applied anywhere, at any time, while taking part in recreational activities.”
Here is a snapshot.
Leave What You Find
- “Preserve the past: examine, photograph, but do not touch cultural or historic structures and artifacts.
- Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.
- Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species.
- Do not build structures, furniture, or dig trenches.”
Exceptional info. Good to know.
Now that we begin the journey, where do we follow Christian to next?
How about taking a look inside of her journal?
We lace up our hiking boots and walk over to christianschaffer.art/journal where she guides, “Would you rather have endless freedom but no stability, or a home and stability but limited freedom? It’s a question I ask myself often, and an area where I’m always trying to strike some kind of balance. I found a little bit of both in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Along with some beautiful views and a much needed hot bath.”
Life is indeed about balance. Often hard to find but very necessary if we are to find happiness.

Time to visit the Santa Fe, New Mexico area.
At first it looks more barren then we expected.
Christian is a little rattled because at about 2am, the night before, she heard gun shots. That really surprised us. We thought there would virtually be no people there. Apparently there were. People with guns. Out in the middle of the wilderness, where no one can hear you scream.
Sounds like a horror film. Good thing nothing happened.
As the sun rises, we are welcomed by a beautiful snow covered paradise. The snow in Santa Fe is magical.
Christian, a professional photographer, will do some shooting that day for a client. So much beautiful scenery to choose from including a handsome and rugged mountain landscape.
She also has the opportunity to rest in a nicely decorated, environmentally friendly home where she does indeed, light a candle, and soak in a much needed bath.
Santa Fe is incredibly spiritual and serene, as advertised.
That is the outer region.
As far as the city itself, Santa Fe is the capital of the New Mexico.
With a population of 87,505 as of the 2020 census, it is the fourth-largest city in New Mexico.
Its metropolitan area is part of the Albuquerque–Santa Fe–Las Vegas combined statistical area, which had a population of 1,162,523 in 2020.
Good to know. Previously we did not see the connection to Las Vegas.
It is at the highest altitude of any of the U.S. state capitals, with an elevation of 7,199 feet (2,194 m). Thus the incredible mountain views.
Santa Fe is widely considered one of the world’s great art cities, due to its many art galleries and installations, and it is recognized by UNESCO‘s Creative Cities Network.
Its cultural highlights include Santa Fe Plaza, the Palace of the Governors, the Fiesta de Santa Fe, numerous restaurants featuring distinctive New Mexican cuisine, and performances of New Mexico music.
Among its many art galleries and installations are the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, a gallery by cartoonist Chuck Jones, and newer art collectives such as Meow Wolf.
Christian certainly knows how to do a tour exquisitely well.
Since Christian once lived in the Seattle area, you should check out her excursion to Mount Rainer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJVn4PLheIc
We loved the scenery, the mountains and the mist. Sighting the deer in the forest made us wonder, who placed them there, throughout time and for what purpose? They are the epitome of quiet, spiritual beauty and serenity.
One more stop in the beautiful, rugged great Northwest.
We figured the Washington State back country would be magnificent and it is. The streams, mountains and vibrant colors are right out of fairytale adventure.

What we love most about Christian is what fascinates us about life.
She is still figuring it out. She doesn’t have all of the answers and each adventure is a little different and far more beautiful than she expected.
She seems to be getting closer to what she seeks.
Like most of us, Christian is not just trying to discover the meaning of life.
She is trying to figure out what is the real purpose of her life.
We would say it is evolving.
We are extremely happy she is taking us along for the eventual discovery. Outdoors. Under the sun, moon and stars.
Towards the ultimate purpose.
