We all love style. Need it.
It is in style, until it isn’t.
When it is out of style, usually there is an advancement in technology that contributed to its declining value.
Currently, binge watching is still in style and all the rage.
That means we love it.
When you get immersed in something, you are all in. As far as we are concerned, great binge watching products are hard to find. We have gone to many of the major streaming services, which at this point shall remain nameless, and they present one series after another that resembles the other series and the other series and the other series, that you just saw, and didn’t finish. Here are a few.
She returns to her hometown, to solve a murder, and finds out there is a cover up.
He returns to his hometown, to solve a murder, and finds out there is a conspiracy.
She is an ex-war veteran who returns home and is out for revenge.
The drug dealers killed his wife and kids and now he wants revenge.
They stole the mob’s money and have only 24 hours to dodge the corrupt cops and thugs who want the money too.
Her family doesn’t know she is an operative for the government until she kicks her husband in the nuts and now, he can hit the high notes.
A virus has wiped out the earth’s population and, once strangers, now they have to trust each other to reach Utopia.
She is on a road trip to change the world and finds that the world changes her.
He is on a road trip to change the world and finds that the world he knew, has already changed.
She is on a road trip to change the world but finds out she needs to change herself first.
He is on a road trip to change the world, and along the way, discovers a new world.
She is on a road trip to change the world and discovers a world she never knew.
She is on a road trip to change the world and wonders, what in the world is going on.
He moves to a small town to find peace and quiet but finds love instead.
She moves to a small town for peace and quiet, finds peace and quiet and is bored out of her skull.
Enough.
We think you get the point.
Here are a few binge worthy series that we found that actually either break with tradition or just do it better than virtually everyone else.
The Night Agent is an American action thriller television series created by Shawn Ryan based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk.
The series stars Gabriel Basso in the title role as it premiered on Netflix on March 23, 2023.
The program emerged as the third-most-viewed debuting series on Netflix in its first four days, and within a week it was renewed for a second season.
Very impressive.
Within a month, it became the streaming service’s sixth-most-viewed series. In October 2024, ahead of the second-season premiere, the series was renewed for a third season. The second season was released on January 23, 2025. The third season is in production as of February 2025.
What do we have here?
There is very little new under the sun, it is just done a lot better. Look at the plot. Nothing really ground breaking in the storyline.
FBI agent Peter Sutherland is thrown into a vast conspiracy about a mole at the highest levels of the United States government. To save the nation, he plunges into a desperate hunt for the traitor, while protecting former tech CEO Rose Larkin from the people who murdered her aunt and uncle.
Okay, there is a mole. Isn’t there always a mole? Isn’t there always a conspiracy? Isn’t there always a love interest? So, they are wise enough not to re-invent the wheel, they just build a better wheel.
The acting is first rate and the star really carries the series. We really loved this one and, despite the cliches, found it to be very fresh.
Here is another.
A patrol officer working in the struggling, high-crime neighborhood of Kensington, Philadelphia investigates the murders of three area women while seeking information about her own sister’s disappearance.
Long Bright River is an American crime drama miniseries based on the 2020 book of the same name by Liz Moore, starring Amanda Seyfried as a Philadelphia police officer. All episodes were released on Peacock on March 13, 2025.
Once again, the storyline is something that we’ve all heard before, except it takes place in a different city, but, as usual, Amanda Seyfried elevates the character and the script.
Here is what one critic said about it, who appears to agree.
The series is set in Kensington, a Philadelphia neighborhood frequently associated with crime, prostitution and an open-air drug market. In a review for NPR‘s Fresh Air, John Powers notes that the series “depicts the characters living in an area of Philly whose decline embodies a profound social collapse … Propelled by its heroine’s search for a killer, Long Bright River isn’t just a mystery but a heartfelt story about wounded communities, wounded families and the wounded individuals who try to make things better.”
Based upon that, treat yourself to another Amanda Seyfried masterpiece.
The Dropout is an American biographical drama television miniseries about the rise and fall of the disgraced biotechnology company Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, played by Amanda.
Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, it is based on the ABC News podcast of the same name hosted by Rebecca Jarvis.
The series features an ensemble supporting cast, including Naveen Andrews, Elizabeth Marvel, William H. Macy, Stephen Fry, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Bill Irwin, Utkarsh Ambudkar, LisaGay Hamilton, Michael Ironside, Laurie Metcalf, Anne Archer, and Sam Waterston.
The Dropout, based on the ABC Audio podcast of the same name — is a series about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos.
The show touches on experiences that likely motivated Holmes’s deceptions and lies in a linear fashion, starting from her preteens and all the way to her exposure as a fraud.
We found ourselves a little sympathetic with Elizabeth. That says a lot about the effectiveness of a story where she should be a complete villain.
So, there you have it. While binge watching these series may not change the world, it just might entertain yours.
