December 13, 2023,
No matter how old you are, you are caught in the middle.
The middle of what?
The middle of which or whatever moment you are in.
Each moment, no matter your age, is incredibly important.
By staying present, strongly in the middle of what you are doing, it prolongs the importance of your life.
It propels you to finish strong.
It reminds us of London Grammar’s mesmerizing and captivating song, Strong.
Here are some of the lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6drfp_3823I
“Excuse me for a while
While I’m wide-eyed
And I’m so damn caught in the middle
I excused you for a while
While I’m wide-eyed
And I’m so damn caught in the middle
And a lion, a lion roars, would you not listen?
If a child, a child cries, would you not forgive them?
Yeah I might seem so strong.”
So moving. And inspiring.
In your life, no matter your age, what are you right now, at this moment, in the middle of?
Is it high school, preparing for college?
Is it college preparing for graduation or entry into a Master’s program?
Is it trying to be united with your spouse in raising your children and preparing for their future?
Are you entering the business space and trying to make your mark on the world?
All things are possible if you focus on each moment with the intent of finishing strong.
Age is of little issue. Let’s look at a film that speaks to that.
Nyad is a 2023 American biographical sports drama film directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, and written by Julia Cox.
It stars Annette Bening as swimmer Diana Nyad, Jodie Foster, and Rhys Ifans. The film is Vasarhelyi and Chin’s narrative feature directorial debut and is based on Nyad’s autobiography Find a Way.
It had its world premiere at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2023. It was released in select theaters on October 20, 2023, before streaming on Netflix on November 3.
We explored her story some time ago and found it fascinating.
If this is the way that you choose to end your life as your last big statement, your last huge act on earth, this journey would certainly qualify.
Find A Way. Great title. Here is the book.
Find a Way: The Inspiring Story of One Woman’s Pursuit of a Lifelong Dream Paperback – June 28, 2016
“When Diana Nyad arrived on the shore of Key West after fifty-three hours of grueling swimming across an epic ocean, she not only set a world record—becoming the first person to swim the shark-infested waters between Cuba and Florida with no cage for protection—she also succeeded in fulfilling a dream she first chased at age twenty-eight and at long last achieved when she was sixty-four.
Now, in a riveting memoir, Diana shares a spirited account of what it takes to face one’s fears, engage one’s passions, and never ever give up. For no matter what life may throw at you, or how many times you may have experienced defeat, it is always possible—as long as you commit to living life to the nth degree, no regrets—to “find a way.”
Exceptional.
Inspiring.
So much about finishing strong is about analyzing where you are headed in the beginning, where you find yourself in the middle and the importance of gaining a new focus if you find yourself drifting, as so many of us do, at middle age.
Don’t become lost as a result of the distractions.
An important element of not drifting and becoming lost is when you are young, take your time and take the time to truly analyze what you want to do with your life.
What you want.
For yourself.
Not what your friends, family, college professor or society expects you to do. You must find out what you want to do. This is so important. For those of us who didn’t find this out when we were young, there is a tendency for life to send you down a pathway that is not in your best interest and you live a life you hate or do not want.
This is a critical process in living the life you want. Then all the pieces of your puzzle, though not perfectly fitting at some points, with adjustments and determination will begin to fit in place to help you finish important sections of your life in a strong way.
One more trip to the bookstore.
Living Strong, Finishing Well: How to Keep Growing and Learning for the Rest of Your Life Paperback – September 7, 2021
By Dr. David Stoop (Author), Stephen Arterburn
“Growing older is inevitable and, as we often say, it beats the alternative. But just because we age does not mean we must give in to a slow deterioration of our bodies, minds, social circles, and interests. It doesn’t mean we need to give up on our dreams, goals, or aspirations. In fact, as people live longer and healthier into old age, we need to decide what we want to do with all the extra years we’ve been given!
In Living Strong, Finishing Well, Dr. David Stoop draws upon his more than 80 years on the planet and his decades of counseling, speaking, and writing to show you how to live every moment to its fullest until you’re finally called home. He shows you how to be yourself, continue the search for meaning, stay humble, build on your friendships, develop resilience, stay teachable, and more as you learn to accept the gifts that come with growing older and wiser in a world that needs what you have to give.”
Very good.
So much of what this book speaks to is continuing to focus on the moments. Continuing to assess where you are right now and analyze what you are doing as opposed to what you really want to be doing. How you are living as opposed to how you actually want to live.
Every moment counts.
It will certainly help you live the life you actually really want and continue to take steps to finish strong with every milestone you achieve.
