June 21, 2023,
Ready to work out?
Need some pep and energy to help you along?
Are you thinking what we are thinking? Perhaps say it in a whisper.
Energy drinks.
If energy drinks, as a whole, were healthy and actually provided you with more demonstrated energy, oh what a happy sports world we would have.
Ready?
An energy drink is a type of drink containing stimulant compounds, usually caffeine, which is marketed as providing mental and physical stimulation.
Do you partake?
They may or may not be carbonated and may also contain sugar, other sweeteners, herbal extracts, taurine, and amino acids.
They are distinct from sports drinks, which are advertised to enhance sports performance. There are many brands and varieties in this drink category.
That is good to know because sometimes we get them mixed up.
Energy drinks generally contain methylxanthines (including caffeine), B vitamins, carbonated water, and high-fructose corn syrup or sugar (for non-diet versions).
Energy drinks have the effects of caffeine and sugar, but there is little or no evidence that the wide variety of other ingredients have any effect.
That’s not why you are drinking them anyway. Right?
Now, sometimes here is the rub.
Energy drinks have been associated with many health risks, such as an increased rate of injury when usage is combined with alcohol, and excessive or repeated consumption can lead to cardiac and psychiatric conditions.
Caution is advised.
Let’s turn to an expert for some advice.
The well-respected informative team at webmd.com educate, “Many sports and fortified liquids also contain sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes to replace minerals lost in sweat. Electrolyte replacement is important for the physically active and for those who may be working in hot and humid environments. The caveat with sports drinks and flavored waters is that they contain calories, whereas water has none.”
Got it.
Water is just not quite as fun. Or as cool looking.
Appreciate the update.
Our concern with energy drinks, more than the caffeine, is the sugar.
What if we found an energy drink that appears to have healthy ingredients and virtually no sugar.
How does that sound to you? Sounds great to us.
Maybe we have found one.
