A cultural blend should always be an educational and enlightening blessing, and it often is, unless the bonding and potential partnership is not in harmony.
This played out sadly and magnificently in the 2005 Independent Film masterpiece La petite Jérusalem.
Laura (Fanny Valette), a young philosophy student, lives with her immigrant family in a Jewish enclave in Paris, and is beginning to question the strict rules of her religion.
She feels bad for her sister Mathilde (Elsa Zylberstein), who is married to an adulterer and believes Judaism compels her to stay with him. When Laura meets an attractive Muslim named Djamel (Hedi Tillette de Clermont-Tonnerre), her sexual desire erodes her commitment to her faith even more.
Their relationship is very high risk and for their religious and cultural blend to be a blessing will take conviction and courage.
The shapely model Bishamber Das is a blend of Indian and Malaysian culture and given her phenomenal success in life, it is a union that has been blessed on earth and upon high.
Her story is important to read about and she is happy to share it with us.
At the culturally expansive site asianlife.co.uk she shares, “Being the First British Asian plus size model is a title I am extremely proud of, with this title has come lots of responsibility which I strive to fulfill every day in everything I do. I am constantly working towards creating a stronger platform for plus size women especially among south Asian communities.
I graduated from the University of Derby in Law and Criminology but decided I wanted to do more hands on work and entered the field of child protection.
Born in the United Kingdom to an Indian Mother and a Malaysian father and belonging to such rich cultures meant food was always the main focus in everyday life exposing me to such wonderful cuisines.”
We expressed that her story is encouraging. Not because it is perfect. Few are. It’s impressive in part because of what she had to overcome.
Her mother worked long hours to try and make ends meet so Bishamber spent much of her time taking care of her siblings.
How did it affect her?
She’s very candid in sharing, “Dealing with this as a child was very difficult. As humans we always try and seek something to escape too in order to forget our ordeals. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol but for me the safest option was to abuse my relationship with food. It was the only thing I had control over in my life, the only thing I could turn to for comfort.”
As the years passed, Bishamber continued to gain weight. People in her circle would criticize her and contribute to her feelings of vulnerability.
Her journey taught her a valuable lesson which she wanted to share with every women, and what better way to do that than through a beauty pageant.
She saw an advertisement for Miss India Europe and decided to challenge the perceptions society held in regards to plus size women especially in the Asian community.
After tough auditions she was crowned the second runner up for Miss India Europe UK meaning she would represent the UK in Barcelona against 9 other European countries.
Her community was proud of her accomplishment.
The global news source derbytelegraph.co.uk reported, “A Derby magistrate has won the title of Miss Photogenic at an international beauty pageant. Bishamber, who is also a social care worker, travelled to Barcelona for the finals, where she was up against 16 women from nine countries. Although she missed out on the title of Miss India Europe, she was crowned Miss Photogenic.”
A high achiever, Bishamber studied law and criminology at the University of Derby and was appointed as a magistrate in Derby at the age of 22.

Her upbringing in British society and her Indian and Malaysian background have amounted to a wonderful blend.
“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.”… Thomas Merton
Her success in the shapely modeling community has been a wonderful plus as well.
Let’s travel to her community of Derby.
Derby is a city and unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of Derbyshire, England. It lies on the banks of the River Derwent in the south of Derbyshire, of which it was traditionally the county town. In the 2011 census, the city had a population of 248,700 and 1,543,000 in the wider metro area.
Rich in history, Derby’s early establishment includes settlement by the Romans.
Today, Derby is an internationally renowned center for advanced transport manufacturing, home to the world’s second largest aero-engine manufacturer, Rolls-Royce, and Derby Litchurch Lane Works, the UK’s only remaining train manufacturer.
The warm and welcoming city site visitderby.co.uk would like to provide you with some insight to some very memorable daily marketing and shopping. “Hidden behind the Guildhall is one of Derby’s greatest treasures: Derby Market Hall.
Be greeted with the fabulous smell of toasting pyclets from the famous Pyclet Parlor as you browse the wealth of unusual, classic and traditional stalls, shops and cafe bars.
If you have never been or have not been for a long time, there has never been a better time to take another look especially at the fabulous Victorian architecture whilst you rummage for bargains.”
Sounds like a nice community to grow up in with a strong sense of belonging…and some very delicious food.
In the previously described movie, it’s a story if watched in a quiet setting with no distractions and dark shades over all of the windows, is a film that you will never forget.
The music is haunting and you can feel the deep sense of pain and fear about the blending of Jewish and Muslim cultures yet given the relationship of Laura and Djamel you hoped that they had the courage to follow through on their deep feelings for one another.
Some us in life never find love.
The film is slowly and powerfully propelled by its exceptional acting and ultimate cautionary sad message.
By contrast, Bishamber’s story is a blend of nurturing, inclusion and harmony.
She is an example of supreme confidence since she was the only plus size women in the competition and used this fully to her advantage as her curvy figure was something the other contestants did not have.
“Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all.”… George Washington
Her firm belief is that women should be judged on their deeds and the good qualities they hold within, and not how they physically look.
Here at Femcompetitor Magazine, in America we agree.
Another example of diverse cultures in perfect harmony. A perfect blend.
