Pulsating and dramatic was the background music as Slovenian ski jumper Vinko Bogataj personified “The Agony of Defeat” by competing in the 1970 International Ski Flying Championship in Oberstdorf, West Germany. The faulty ski jump he had that day would be seen each week in the series’ opening sequence of ABC’s Wide World of Sports.
His performance was the polar opposite of enjoying the glory of “The Thrill of Victory” which announcer Jim McKay would open the segment with as we watched the legendary American boxer Sugar Ray Leonard dazzle to victory.
If any beautiful Fem Competitor personified the Thrill of Victory and The Agony of Defeat during her glorious career in the DWW women’s wrestling factory, it was the sensuous, strong, shapely Czech brunette named Gloria.
An examination of her record demonstrates lopsided thrilling victories and agonizing defeats punctuated with domination. Fortunately our DWW Maiden’s victory total was greater than her defeats but it was intriguing what ping ponged back and forth in Gloria’s mind when she was losing because many of the scores were not close which was puzzling given her great skill level.
Just when you think you had her figured out as a moderate to good fighter, she would absolutely surprise you with these signature wins over elite warriors like the chest thumping Luna and rock solid performers in Anastasia, Antonia, Denise and rising future star Kimbra.
Her long, hard fought resume includes competing against Pamela, Renata B, Anastasia, Anni, Gloria, Nikita, Miriam, Emanuella, Mary-Ann, Luna, Antonia, Mel, Eva N, Pettula, Denise, Lucille, Jana N, Petra, Leslie, Antscha, Vladka, Dani, Kimbra, Edita, Laila, Bea S, and Dani,
One opponent she defeats 9-0 and at least twice she was the shapely spoils to victors at 5-0 defeats.
Go figure.
One thing that was easy to figure was that Gloria was a volatile beautiful star that we loved to watch shine bright; full of controversy and excitement. In one match she would relentlessly fight her way back from the jaws of defeat, turn the tables and then have a sexy, tough competitor like Antonia submit to her will and then in another match she would erotically beg her successful opponent to please stop scissoring her and in very feminine form, melt into her arms and submit to the other girl’s will in real competition.
The one review that seemed to exemplify Gloria’s sweet, unpredictable personality was when she was in a cat fight with Miriam and complained because she was getting her hair pulled too hard. The reviewer wondered what in the world did Gloria expect.
It’s a catfight!
Sometimes as DWW fans we wondered who would win if the old guard had a chance to fight the newer generation of DWW wrestlers. When she faced veteran Ingrid of 1990s to early 2000 fame, though smaller, I thought Ingrid would still win.
You can find the match at dwwgalaxy.com and here is how the reviewer described it. “Gloria is always in tremendous condition. And she is always very confident. This match is pins and submissions, and you will see both. Also, both wrestlers will be wearing jean shorts. Gloria wins over Ingrid 5-0, who preferred to catfight.
Of course Ingrid wanted another catfight but Gloria didn’t want that idea at all as she has already had enough hair being ripped out by aggressive Ingrid last time. These two women still had something to settle something and there’s no love lost between them at all.”
No head scratcher there.
Here is what is described when she met the always confident Luna.
“Luna has stormed onto the DWW scene destroying virtually every opponent who has had the misfortune to face her. Now for the first time she faces an opponent who is truly her equal. Gloria is tough and skillful and is clearly not ready to give way to her younger counterpart.”
Gloria was a member of the Czech DWW contingent. Let’s take another trip together to the Czech Republic with an eye on food and etiquette.
Always a fantastic foundation builder, if you are not familiar with The Czech Republic, Wikipedia will gladly introduce you.
“The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe bordered by Germany to the northwest and west, Austria to the south, Slovakia to the east and Poland to the northeast. Prague, the capital, is the largest city, with 1.3 million residents. The Czech Republic includes the historical territories of Bohemia and Moravia, and Czech Silesia.
The Czech state, known in English as Bohemia until the early 20th century, was formed in the late 9th century as the Duchy of Bohemia under the Great Moravian Empire.”
Thank you Wikipedia.
Now it’s time to eat. Oh by the way, if you’re looking for health foods, as one Food Critic expressed, The Czech Republic is not the place for bean sprouts or Sushi. Look, how do you think so many of our DWW Czech beauties got to be big sexy, curvy girls?
The enticing site www.foodbycountry.com provides us with a fork and a knife. “Czech cuisine was influenced historically by the surrounding regions that dominated the country. In 1273, Count Rudolph, King of Germany, founded the Hapsburg dynasty. Eventually the dynasty controlled most of Europe, including the region of the present-day Czech Republic. The Germans brought with them roast goose, sauerkraut, and dumplings, which have since become Czech staple dishes.
Czech cuisine is considered heavy and very filling, with meals centered on meats and starches. This is because Czech winters are long and cold, which does not allow for a variety of fresh vegetables. In fact, if salads are available, they typically are limited to two vegetables, such as tomato and cucumber.
Seafood is not widely available because the country is not located by any large bodies of water. The fish, usually carp and trout, are raised in artificial lakes or fish farms.”
It still sounds yummy to me. So, if you are invited to the home of a Czech family, here are some tips provided by www.kwintessential.co.uk. Here goes.
Once you arrive, please remember these suggestions.
If you are visiting a Czech’s house:
. Arrive on time.
. Remove your shoes.
. Expect to be treated with great honor and respect.
. Dress modestly and well.
. Do not discuss business. Czechs separate their business and personal lives.
. Table manners are rather formal in Czech Republic.
. Remain standing until invited to sit down. You may be shown to a particular seat.
. Table manners are Continental — the fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right while eating.
. Do not begin eating until the hostess starts.
. Unless the meal is formal, the napkin remains folded next to the plate. At formal meals, the napkin is unfolded and put on your lap.
. The oldest woman or honored guest is generally served first.
. Always refuse second helpings the first time they are offered. Wait for the hostess to insist.
. Compliment the meal while you are eating. This allows the hostess to discuss the food and the preparation.
. Indicate you have finished eating by laying your knife and fork parallel across the right side of your plate.
Wow, quite a list. It would be wise to follow it though if you desire a nice evening.
Visiting DWW’s Gloria’s warm memory has been very nice.
Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.……..Confucius
According to our favorite naming site sheknows.com the name Gloria is defined as having Glory. They add, “People with this name have a deep inner need for quiet, and a desire to understand and analyze the world they live in, and to learn the deeper truths.”
Female Competition International would like to thank Gloria for her hard work, passion and willingness to wrestle with conviction.
In terms of results, Gloria most often had the “Thrill of Victory” and gloriously lived up to her name.
