Michael Jackson, the legendary Pop Icon did it when he transitioned from his Gary, Indiana family hit making machine, The Jackson Five. The family would eventually rename themselves the Jacksons before Michael went on to a stellar solo career. His good friend and masterful singer Donny Osmond did it based upon Michael Jackson’s recommendation to change his name. As a result his moving song, Soldier of Love, was a smash hit.
Born out of necessity and wisdom, Corporations do it, Colleges and individuals do it as well in an effort to thrive and in many cases survive.
At least once in a lifetime, we all need to reinvent ourselves to make things work better, to grow and in some cases, to emotionally and financially survive.
Simply put, to reinvent yourself is to change so much that you evolve into someone entirely new.
As a female submission wrestler when you chart your financial and work procurement trends, be it with sessions, modeling or wrestling assignments, are things getting better or worse? Do you see a need for strong improvement? Sometimes denial can be our most powerful and limiting force field.
Just as established products and brands need updating to stay alive and vibrant, you periodically need to refresh or reinvent yourself.……….Mireille Guiliano
What are some signs that indicate you need to reinvent yourself as an industry performer?
- Rebirth. You’re at a new phase in your life, wrestling or modeling career and you want to be known for something different.
- Goal Setting: It’s been a while since you’ve set new attainable goals.
- Sagging Sales. That says it all.
Many in the business and motivational world acknowledge this. Let’s share a few thoughts.
These are thoughts from Mr. Josh Linkner, a best-selling author, venture capitalist, entrepreneur and keynote speaker found at http://joshlinkner.com/the-road-to-reinvention/
“Companies, communities, and individuals fall for many reasons, but one of the most common—and easily avoidable—is the failure to reinvent. When people and organizations rest on prior successes rather than driving purposeful transformation, they discover too late that they have lost their market position altogether to competitors and external forces.
The most successful companies, brands, and individuals make reinvention a regular part of their business strategies.”
“Japan’s very interesting. Some people think it copies things. I don’t think that anymore. I think what they do is reinvent things. They will get something that’s already been invented and study it until they thoroughly understand it. In some cases, they understand it better than the original inventor.”……………..Steve Jobs
As of this early January, 2015 writing, due to sagging sales, the global fast food giant, McDonalds is re-inventing its marketing campaign by focusing on the power of love.
As the saying goes, there’s nothing older than yesterday’s success.
So, what are some proven methodologies that can be applied to jump start your re-emergence? Let’s view a few suggestions from an expert. We’ll start with the sensational Motivational Communicator, Mr. Robert Chen.
1. Define in Detail a Better Identity
Think about the identity you want to step into. What are the inner qualities and outer appearances that make up this identity?
A good place to start is to look closely at the people you admire and isolate the qualities that you admire about them. What is their demeanor and personality?
- How would they carry themselves in public and in private?
- What is their view on handling disputes?
- What clothes would they wear?
- How would they treat waiters, their boss or the President of the US?
- What good habits would they have?
Once you have a clearer picture for how this new identity thinks, looks and acts, organize this information and create a profile for this “new” you. Hone in on three key characteristics that define this new identity and highlight them in your profile.
2. Step Into Your New Identity
To mentally prepare, visualize yourself adopting the thought processes and mannerisms of this new identity. Rehearse in your mind typical scenarios you face and how you would act with this new set of qualities. Notice the differences between how you would have handle the situation before and how you would handle it now.
3. Make Your New Identity Stick
This is probably the most challenging step.
“To make your new identity stick, other people must acknowledge it. This is tough because those around you know you as you and it’s common to believe that people don’t fundamentally change. Think about your own experience with people you knew when you were younger who have changed dramatically. Weren’t you a bit skeptical too?
Tell those close to you what you’re trying to do. You can even show them this article to help them understand. They can support you if they want but at the minimum they should not sabotage you.”
In researching and working with the colleges of the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA), we found that many of them went through a major re-invention including renaming themselves as Universities and removing the name college from their signatures.
The fully competitive female wrestling industry has experienced the need to re-invent as well. The days of snail mail orders and video shoots are declining due to many factors including slumping sales and online piracy. At Female Competition International (FCI), our decision to focus on an article driven format to attract readers and college educated females to deliver a powerful market to corporate advertisers was born out of that need to change.
When things are bad, it’s the best time to reinvent yourself.……….George Lopez
Some competitors have successfully added tone and muscle to their form to compete in the new MMA influenced competitive female wrestling world. They are also willing to fight outside of their familiar safety zones to face new talent and improve. Other industry stars that refused to change or learn mixed martial arts are no longer with us.
You as an Independent Contractor have a lot of power in your ability to restart or reinvent your career if needed. If you can effectively do so, the future of increased sales and session revenue could be a desirable outcome.
