November 15, 2024,
You have to try and be strong.
No one can help you like you can help yourself. Sometimes that means getting help from others but mostly it will fall on your shoulders.
When examining what is an issue for you or, stated another way, a problem, how much of it is real and how much of it is exaggerated and imagined? At times, very hard to tell. Part of the key is to try and not over think things.
Simplify.
Real problems demand our immediate attention, like these.
It is 105 degrees on the highway, your car broke down and your cell phone can’t get reception. You agree, that is a problem, right?
Your rent just went up from $1,500 a month to $3,000 a month. For us, that would be a real problem.
A major grocer has decided to close down the store in your location, you don’t have a car, and the next one is miles away. You can only shop at mom and pop stores at higher prices for so long.
Again, problems demand immediate solutions.
All of the above problems can be solved, but for the moment, they are problems.
Think about methods to solve problems.
Problem solving is the process of achieving a goal by overcoming obstacles, a frequent part of most activities.
Problems in need of solutions range from simple personal tasks to complex issues in business and technical fields.
Sometimes they involve more than one person but here, primarily we are speaking of problems that you can solve yourself.
Are you the source of the problem?
The key to answering that question is looking at your defined behavior.
As the expression goes, it is time to be honest with yourself.
Time for an example.
We have an associate who had a relatively successful life, and like us, had elite success in the high school sports world. He saw himself as a moderately successful and confident person. Then he had issues with his company and went into a Workers Comp process. The company had their therapist analyze him. In her final report she described him as a person of extremely low self-esteem.
He was shocked.
Then angry.
He filed a complaint with the appropriate board.
Then he re-read the report.
She stated things like he was eager to please, puts others before himself, let’s others take advantage of him, gives far more in relationships than the other party gives to him and more. And you know what?
She was right.
Our associate had to take some time, analyze his past and begin to make changes. Many people of the past, he ended their relationships.
They didn’t really care.
The examples that often happen in real life is when people get conned into relationships where their money is stolen and their lives are ruined.
So many life lessons can be learned on film. Time to turn the screen on. This is a good one.
House of Games is a 1987 American neo-noir film about con-men and confidence scams by David Mamet, his directorial debut. The film’s cast includes Lindsay Crouse, Joe Mantegna, Ricky Jay, and J. T. Walsh.
Here is the storyline.
Psychiatrist Margaret Ford has achieved success with her recently published book about obsessive-compulsive disorder, but feels unfulfilled. Margaret visits a pool hall called House of Games.
What in the world does she expect to happen there?
She spends the rest of the night socializing with the con men. The experience excites her and she returns the next night. She asks one of them named Mike to teach her about con games so she can write a book about it. Mike appears skeptical, but agrees.
Margaret is enchanted by Mike showing her simple con tricks. Eventually, the two sneak into a hotel room and have romance. Afterward, Mike tells Margaret that con artists take a small token from every “mark” to signify their dominance.
So it begins.
Does he con her? Of course.
Eventually she needs to analyze herself to see that the problem started with her. Not him.
Let’s walk over to the bookstore.
This one intrigued us.
Fixed.: How to Perfect the Fine Art of Problem Solving Hardcover – December 14, 2021
By Amy E Herman (Author)
“With Amy Herman’s Fixed., we now have access to what the FBI, NATO, the State Department, Interpol, Scotland Yard, and many more organizations and their leaders have been using to solve their most intractable problems.
Demonstrating a powerful paradigm shift for finding solutions, Herman teaches us to see things differently, using art to challenge our default thinking and open up possibilities otherwise overlooked. Her unexpected, insightful, and often delightful methodology is sought after by leaders and professionals for whom failure is catastrophic. Luckily for us, these tactics work— no matter the problem’s scale or complexity. And we don’t need an art degree or previous knowledge about art to benefit from her approach, only a willingness to open our eyes and our minds. Yes, things go wrong all the time. What matters most is what we do to fix them.”
Especially when they go wrong within ourselves.
You simply have to get your mind right. In the present.
We can’t say enough about how adult children still have issues with their parents, even though the latter group has not lived with them in over 15-20 years. At what point is there a statute of limitations on how long you can blame your parents for what occurred from childhood and your teenage years?
Life is about now.
Problem solving is about right now.
Right now, it seems like the world is on fire. Symbolically and literally. There is not a lot you can do about that, but there are some things that you can do, like donate to the Red Cross.
In your individual life, from our experience, the important thing is to identify the source of where the problems emanate, that are bothering or affecting you. Typically, painful as it may be, it starts with you. With us.
If we get our mind right, instead of blaming others, but instead take responsibility, that is the starting place of change.
