May 6, 2024,
Sometimes, like in life, they last a long time, other times they do not.
Television series.
We all have our favorites, the problem is, sometimes they are not the favorite of the masses and we have to accept that we might suffer.
This series falls into the category of, we wish it was renewed, over and over.
Gypsy
Gypsy is an American psychological thriller web television series created by Lisa Rubin for Netflix.
Naomi Watts stars as Jean Holloway, a psychologist who secretly infiltrates the private lives of her patients. Billy Crudup co-stars as her husband Michael.
The first season comprises 10 episodes and was released on June 30, 2017.
Stevie Nicks re-recorded an acoustic version of her Fleetwood Mac song “Gypsy” to serve as the show’s theme song. Nice touch.
Academy Award-nominee Naomi Watts stars in this Netflix-original psychological thriller as Jean, a therapist in New York with a successful practice and a life that seems picturesque.
Or at least we thought so.
Well we still think so. The problem is she doesn’t think so nor recognize what an incredible life that she has.
Why place a life that most of us would dream of at risk? Maybe that’s the thrill.
As Jean starts to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives, the borders of her professional life and personal fantasies become blurred. Jean descends into a world where reality and the forces of her desires are disastrously at odds, which impacts her life and the lives of those around her.
We were waiting for this one to blow up in her face but she always seemed to be one step ahead of the grenade while planting one foot one inch away from the landmine.
Tricky business indeed in high heels.
She’s not the heroine but Naomi’s heroic effort makes this one binge watch worthy.
We were greatly disappointed the series was not renewed by Netflix for a second season.
BATWOMAN – FIRST SEASON
The temptation is to selfishly experience them once and never see them again. Mostly at night. Rarely in the morning. Even if we do remember their name.
You’ve done that right?
We sure have. More than once. In fact, most of the time. There is ten to take their place.
Tomorrow.
Or later in the week.
In order for a new television series to get a second date with us, and heaven forbid, keep us coming back, begging for more, it is all about how it makes us feel.
There’s tons of exceptional writers out there and the unemployment lines are filled with them.
It is the stellar writers that make us feel something that keep us coming back.
So, when we first heard of the Batwoman series, we weren’t sure what to expect.
Chick stuff? Eye candy in tights?
Batwoman is an American superhero television series developed by Caroline Dries and Greg Berlanti. It is based on the DC Comics character Batwoman, a costumed crime-fighter created by Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, and Keith Giffen, and is set in the Arrowverse, sharing continuity with the other television series of the universe.
The series premiered on The CW on October 6, 2019 and is primarily filmed in Vancouver.
Too often in the past, the female driven comic book heroine’s TV and film storylines relied heavily on their looks and sensuality to drive the series. Often right into the cancellation graveyard.
Batwoman is different. Very different.
She made her debut in Elseworlds, almost teamed up with Super Girl and has been a force ever since.
Yes she is sensuous. In fact her ability to fly in and out of relationships is as skillful as her sailing around dangerous rooftops in the dark.
Fortunately it is not the driving force of the series.
Family relationships seem to be important here, though not in a Father Knows Best sort of way, in part because her father knows bad best, very well, and tries to protect Gotham from it. All the time.
He’s really busy.
We love her tension because it pervades so much of the storyline. It permeates between her and her father, mostly centering on her long lost sister and her dissolved relationship with a former lover that’s not resolved.
Okay, we’re starting to feel something.
Give the lead actress Ruby Rose credit.
She carries Batwoman with the depth necessary to keep us puzzled, curious and engaged. Her desire to carry on her cousin Bruce Wayne’s work is admirable. She was looking for a calling in her father’s private army but initially he didn’t want that and eventually neither did she.
When she finally was down in the Bat cave and saw Bruce’s vacated Dark Knight Suit, she knew what her calling was and what she could do for Gotham.
So, sad Ruby was gone after one sensational season.
As posted by hollywoodreporter.com, from Roby Rose’s Instagram, “To my dear, dear fans still asking if I will return to that awful show, I wouldn’t return for any amount of money nor if a gun were to my head.”
If only Ruby was Batwoman in real life, she could fly in to save the day.
SMILF
SMILF is an American sitcom starring, created, written, and directed by Frankie Shaw.
It was based on her short film of the same title.
The series premiered on Showtime on November 5, 2017. The series’ name, SMILF, is a play on the term “MILF“, with the “S” standing for “single”, or “Southie” (a nickname for South Boston), or both.
We loved the funny moments of this show which chronicled the life of this single mom living in Boston and her up and down (mostly down) relationships with her mother and friends.
The show lasted two seasons and then was cancelled due to more off screen conflict. Word has it On December 17, 2018, The Hollywood Reporter published an exclusive report that cast and crew members were alleging misconduct on the set, including “inappropriately handled sex scenes”, and that co-star Weaving had left the production over breach of contract in the filming of a sex scene.
Simply put, they wanted nudity and Frankie did not.
Too bad it didn’t work out. There was never a dull moment.
Well, there you have it.
No doubt you have you a favorite TV series that were cancelled way too early as we have ours.
A life lesson on thoroughly enjoying right now.
It is all we have.
Tomorrow is promised to no one.
