September 20, 2023,
What is the first step in a process of getting what you want?
First, is knowing what you want.
That is the hard part.
Especially when you are young.
Now, there is a short-term goal in knowing what you want, like going to college.
After that, it can get a little more complicated.
What do you want to do with your life? How do you want to live your life?
A friend of ours, while sitting at a San Francisco coffee shop posed the question, “If you could take a week off, completely away from your work, family, responsibilities and usual activities, what would you do with that time?”
Very good question.
How would you answer that?
Some people would be uncomfortable with the concept as they have to stay busy.
For us, not writing articles and forwarding female sports and entertainment into the future, for an entire week, would be daunting.
The good news for us is that we are doing what we want but it took years to get there. Too long, as a matter of fact.
One of our associates was faced with that question at 25 and he didn’t know what he wanted, got heavily involved in an organized religion, and in a devastating way, his life was never the same.
In the interest of serving who he believed to be the creator, he allowed others to tell him what he should do, how he should think and the like.
When you are young, this is a tough question because you just don’t have the experience.
But you should take the time to think about it.
Maybe a week is not long enough.
If you save some money, are single and independent, what would you do with one month off?
Maybe three?
This is not about finding your way back from self-destruction. It is more about emotional life planning. What pathway will make you happy?
As we often do, time to turn to film.
Into the Wild is a 2007 American biographical adventure drama film written, co-produced, and directed by Sean Penn. Given his bad boy past on film, we were a little surprised this gem about internal struggles would emanate from him.
Our mistake.
It is an adaptation of the 1996 non-fiction book of the same name written by Jon Krakauer and tells the story of Christopher McCandless (“Alexander Supertramp“), a man who hiked across North America into the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1990s.
The film stars Emile Hirsch as McCandless, Marcia Gay Harden as his mother, William Hurt as his father, Jena Malone, Catherine Keener, Brian H. Dierker, Vince Vaughn, Kristen Stewart, and Hal Holbrook.
Here is the basic storyline.
In April 1992, Christopher McCandless arrives in a remote area called Healy, just north of Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Noting McCandless’ unpreparedness, the man who drops him off gives him gumboots.
McCandless sets up camp in an abandoned city bus that he calls “The Magic Bus”. He is content with the isolation, the beauty of nature, and the thrill of living off the land. He hunts with a .22, reads books, and keeps a journal as he prepares his new life in the wild.
One of the first things that struck us here, in relationship to you, when you are thinking about a new life, plan for it. Find the balance. Don’t plan so much that you become paralyzed but do so before you move forward.
Our take on the film was that he was running from something. So many of us often are. In our case, organized religion and truthfully, the Bible, and all that goes with it.
Once you leave those things behind, what are you running towards?
Our suggestion?
Start with what you love.
That is why taking a week off or months may be valuable. Without all of the clutter of family expectations, societal competition and important obligations, at some point you will gravitate towards something that you like very much.
We strongly suggest to do this while you are young. Before you get married or tied down. Do it then.
In the above film did he find out what he really wanted? You have to watch the film but we would say, he found out more about what he didn’t want.
The film premiered during the 2007 Rome Film Fest and opened outside Fairbanks, Alaska, on September 21, 2007. It received critical acclaim and grossed $56 million worldwide. It was nominated for two Golden Globes and won the award for Best Original Song: “Guaranteed” by Eddie Vedder. It was also nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Editing and Best Supporting Actor for Hal Holbrook.
Let’s get one more suggestion by walking over to the book store.
