September 17, 2023,
There are some people, who can make us smile, even in the direst of circumstances.
We have an associate, who like most of us, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. When he was kid they use to have earth quakes drills at his elementary school, E.R. Taylor. When the drill began, the kids would push their desks together and hide underneath.
It was a scary moment.
Understandably, the kids were terrified of a building falling down upon them.
One day, when they pushed the desks together and hid underneath, a little stressed, one of his friends, who was incredibly funny, looked our associate in the eyes and pointed to a cracked in between the tables and they roared with laughter. They weren’t that safe after all.
Nothing like a sense of humor.
How about your personality? Do you have a good sense of humor?
It can certainly make tough situations better.
The informative team at psychologytoday.com share, “According to Freud, humor is one the highest levels of adaptive defense mechanisms, which allows us to maintain a healthy perspective in the face of misfortune and adversity.”
How true.
The article goes on to add, a number of psychology theorists surmise humor is a most dynamic way to deal with life’s struggles, hardships and everyday challenges.
We have certainly found that to be true in our own experiences.
One of the most powerful life lessons with that, don’t use humor to make fun of others and make them feel bad, especially in front of a group, while you exalt yourself.
In terms of friendships, people are drawn to others who can make them laugh. Isn’t that one of the more enjoyable aspects of being young?
We saw that a lot on early television.
Gilligan was incredibly funny on the show Gilligan’s island.
Gilligan’s Island is an American sitcom created and produced by Sherwood Schwartz.
The show’s ensemble cast features Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells.
It aired for three seasons on the CBS network from September 26, 1964, to April 17, 1967.
Now for the storyline.
The series follows the comic adventures of seven castaways as they try to survive on an island where they are shipwrecked. Most episodes revolve around the dissimilar castaways’ conflicts and their unsuccessful attempts to escape their plight, with the ship’s first mate, Gilligan, usually being responsible for the failures.
That is what made it so funny. Gilligan’s misdeeds.
Of course you had to use your imagination but it doesn’t get much more dire than being lost on a deserted island, especially when all of your wonderful creature comforts are gone.
That group absolutely needed a sense of humor to survive that plight and fortunately they took us along for the swim.
So, how do you develop a sense of humor?
In our experience, with a smile, look for the irony and absurdity in situations, especially as it pertains to yourself.
Then make a joke about it.
It certainly can be attracting to potential love interests.
You have to watch this film and see if you agree.
Roger Dodger is a 2002 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Dylan Kidd.
It stars Campbell Scott, Jesse Eisenberg (in his feature film debut), Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth Berkley and Jennifer Beals.
The film follows Roger Swanson (Scott), a womanizing and somewhat bitter ad executive, who takes his nephew Nick (Eisenberg) out for a night in the city after the young man asks him for advice on seducing women.
With a storyline like that, you know you are in for some great laughs and this film delivers in diamonds.
Let’s dig a little deeper.
Cynical New York City advertising copywriter Roger Swanson, a self-styled lothario (behaves selfishly), is dumped by his on-again and off-again strong girlfriend, Joyce, who is also his boss.
Ouch.
His workday is further complicated by the unexpected arrival of his sixteen-year-old nephew, Nick, who came to New York City to do a college admissions interview at Columbia University.
After asking to spend the night at Roger’s, Nick reveals that he has come to ask for help in the hope of ending his status as a virgin.
For many of us as male teens, make that, dreaded status.
That evening, an embittered Roger takes Nick to an upscale singles bar and gives him guidance in pickup artistry. They meet two women, Andrea and Sophie, and have a lengthy conversation.
And a lot of fun.
Both Scott and Eisenberg received awards notices, with Scott winning a National Board of Review Award for Best Male Lead and Eisenberg earning a Gotham Award nomination for Breakthrough Actor.
That was film. Let’s walk over to the book store.

Are you smiling yet? We looked at television and film.
How about song?
From the legendary Nat King Cole.
“Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through for you”
Now, if that doesn’t make you smile, we’re not sure what will.
