February 26, 2023,
It is hovering over our heads.
All of our heads.
No matter where you live, if the unthinkable happens, virtually none of us can escape it.
Given how the earth will look and feel when it is over, maybe none of us will want to.
According to thebulletin.org, “The Doomsday Clock is a design that warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making. It is a metaphor, a reminder of the perils we must address if we are to survive on the planet.
This year, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moves the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward, largely (though not exclusively) because of the mounting dangers of the war in Ukraine. The Clock now stands at 90 seconds to midnight—the closest to global catastrophe it has ever been.”
What a sobering thought.
As much as we would like to close the door and curtains to make it go away, we can’t.
Having said that, thinking about that and all of the other social problems can make us ill from stress.
We still need to escape.
Even if it is only in our minds.
We love to do so through entertainment. Let’s stay on a theme. If there was ever a beautiful woman who could help up escape, it is the captivating actress Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, model, and singer.
Famous for playing comic “blonde bombshell” characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s, as well as an emblem of the era’s sexual revolution.
She was a top-billed actress for a decade, and her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2021) by the time of her death in 1962.
Long after her death, Ms. Monroe remains a major icon of pop culture.
In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her sixth on their list of the greatest female screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Apparently we are not alone when we want to escape into the magical realm of Marilyn Monroe.
Hundreds of books have been written about Monroe. She has been the subject of numerous films, plays, operas, and songs, and has influenced artists and entertainers such as Andy Warhol and Madonna.
She also remains a valuable brand.
Her image and name have been licensed for hundreds of products, and she has been featured in advertising for brands such as Max Factor, Chanel, Mercedes-Benz, and Absolut Vodka.
Ah, the power of the Marilyn escape.
Shall we escape some more?
How about through celluloid dreams. Recent ones.
The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes is a 2022 American documentary film directed by Emma Cooper for Netflix. It is centered on the life and untimely death of American actress and cultural icon Marilyn Monroe and is told through archival footage and unseen interviews with friends of the star.
The film was released on April 27, 2022.
Now that she has long passed, can there be anything new to her story?
Maybe.
Anthony Summers, the author of the book Goddess (1985), explains he began researching Marilyn Monroe after he learned that the Los Angeles County District Attorney was reopening the case of her death.
Mr. Summers subsequently spent three years collecting 650 tape-recorded interviews with people who either knew Monroe in her lifetime or had knowledge concerning her death. The audio of the interviews is original, but actors perform lip-synced reenactments.
As Monroe began acting, she had affairs with multiple powerful men who helped advance her career. Fellow actor Jane Russell notes Monroe had a particularly strong work ethic. However, Monroe suffered from poor mental health stemming from a troubled childhood.
That has been well-chronicled.
Still. We need an escape so we are interested.
We are interested in this other Marilyn Monroe offering as well.
Blonde is a 2022 American biographical psychological drama film written and directed by Andrew Dominik, and the second adaptation, with the same name, based on the 2000 novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates.
The film is a fictionalized take on the life and career of American actress Marilyn Monroe, played by Ana de Armas. The cast also includes Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Xavier Samuel, and Julianne Nicholson.
Interesting. Big time players indeed.
Artistically, the film plays with shifting aspect ratios and alternates between color and black and white.
Now for the storyline. A great escape.
As a child, Norma Jeane Mortenson grew up being raised by her mentally unstable mother Gladys.
On her seventh birthday in 1933, she is given a framed picture of a man Gladys claims is her father. Later that night, a fire breaks out in the Hollywood Hills, and Gladys drives Norma Jeane up there, claiming that her father lives there, but is forced to go back home at the orders of the police.
An enraged Gladys tries to drown Norma Jeane in the bathtub when she asks about her father but lets her go. Norma Jeane flees to the house of her neighbor, Miss Flynn, who promises she will be fine.
Days later, Norma Jeane is sent to an orphanage while Gladys is admitted to a mental hospital, having been declared unfit to raise a child.
Marilyn escapes.
Into another realm.
In the 1940s, Norma Jeane becomes a pin-up model under the stage name “Marilyn Monroe”, featuring on magazine covers and calendars.
So it begins.
For her performance, de Armas received nominations for the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, and SAG Award for Best Actress.
Impressive.
With so many growing social problems, around the globe, it can be overwhelming. At times, there are so many issues, it is hard to determine which ones are solvable. All we can do is hope they don’t come crashing into our personal life.
That is why we choose to escape.
Into celluloid paradise where dreams come true. Platinum blonde and shining bright.
We are certain that you have your favorite actresses to escape with. Into their realm.
Marilyn is ours.
