September 9, 2020,
Though not the way it was drawn up, when you can get a victory against a top player, even if she retires, be glad to get it.
We’ve heard of the whole idea of “to be the best, you have to best the best” theory.
We prefer the “last woman standing” is the champion theory.
In her match against Alize Cornet, the great American star Madison Keys lay flat on her back. In the end. She had to retire from the match, as Ms. Cornet won 7 (7) – 3 (4) and 3-2.
At usopen.org they share, “Alizé Cornet advanced to the fourth round at the US Open for the first time as Madison Keys was forced to retire in the second set, trailing 7-6, 3-2, due to injury. The No.7 seed, a 2017 runner-up in New York, couldn’t manage to convert any of her six break points in the match, as Cornet, the World No. 56, hung tough against Keys’ blistering pace and continued to keep pace with the powerful American.”
So, at the end of this match, Alize was still standing and as a result she will move on to the round of sixteen.
Alize reaches the Round of 16 at the 2020 US Open for the first time, in her 14th appearance in the tennis year’s major tournament.
Alize will next face Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova in the Round of 16 as she attempts to reach her first quarterfinal on her 57th lifetime Grand Slam appearance.
So, who is Alize Cornet?
Alizé is a French professional tennis player.
Our French luminary has won six singles and three doubles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as three singles and three doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.
The 2020 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s World Tennis Tour is a second-tier tour for women’s professional tennis.
It is organized by the International Tennis Federation and is a tier below the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour.
The ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour includes tournaments with prize money ranging from $15,000 to $100,000. The ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour is the product of reforms designed to support talented junior players in their progression to the senior game, and target the prize money effectively at professional tournaments to enable more players to make a living.
What a great idea.
On February 16, 2009, Alize reached her highest WTA singles ranking of world No. 11.
In 2014, she made headline news after defeating the world’s then number one ranked Serena Williams on three occasions.
At the Dubai Tennis Championships, she recorded a straight-set win over Williams in the semifinals, which resulted in Cornet’s reaching her biggest singles final in almost six years. In July, at the Wimbledon Championships, she came back from a set down to upset Williams in the third round, handing the American her earliest exit at the tournament since 2005.
You can see why she made the news and at this year’s Open and why she was talented enough to take the first set of the hard hitting Madison Keys.
Ms. Cornet also has an impressive junior’s record, reaching a career-high combined junior ranking of world No. 8 on June 11, 2007. She also won her sole Grand Slam junior singles title at the 2007 French Open.
That our friends is quite a resume.
We also noticed something else about Alize making news.
She really is a gorgeous girl and is happy to let her fans view her in sexy outfits online.
Kind of reminds us of another sexy French Canadian girl. Maybe you’ve heard of her? Especially her life off the courts.
That would be Eugenie Bouchard. The beautiful Eugenie has her critics regarding her lack of focus.
Alize on the other hand, a dedicated tour veteran, is very focused and will need every bit of that intensity in today’s Round of 16 battle.
Alize is playing her 54th consecutive Grand Slam at the US Open. That accomplishment makes her the leader among active players on the Tour.
Our Road Warrior’s next match is against Tsvetana Pironkova, who is playing her first event in over three years but is someone Alize has known and played with for a very long time.
It is hard to believe a player has not competed for three years, makes a comeback and finds herself in the third round of the most prolific tournament of the year.
Who is Tsvetana?
Ms. Pironkova is a Bulgarian professional tennis player.
She was the highest ranked Bulgarian tennis player for more than a decade.
Pironkova is considered to be one of the best grass court players of her generation and has been noted for her “cerebral” skills on the surface.
That certainly showed against Alize today.
Dubbed as a dramatic ranking phenomenon by media outlets, she is also known for upstaging higher ranked opponents at Grand Slam tournaments.
True to form she has done that too.
Tsvetana started playing tennis at the age of four after being introduced to the sport by her father.
She made her WTA Tour debut at the İstanbul Cup in 2005, and achieved moderate success earlier in her career. That changed in 2010, when she entered Wimbledon with a 1–4 career record at the event, and went on reach the semifinals of the tournament, becoming just the second Bulgarian tennis player in history to reach the semifinal stage of a Grand Slam in singles.
She amazed tennis fans around the globe.
Our Bulgarian luminary won her first WTA title at the 2014 Apia International, defeating three top-10 ranked players in a row. She defeated the world No. 2, Radwańska, in the fourth round of the 2016 French Open, reaching her first quarterfinal at a Grand Slam other than Wimbledon.
She has a total of twelve wins over top-10 ranked players. She also holds a long streak of consecutive Grand Slam appearances at 47. Ahead of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, a cerebral girl launched her own women’s clothing and lifestyle brand, Pironetic.
Well, it appears Alize has her hands full.
When we prepped for this story, all indicators were that Alize should win this match. Handily.
She didn’t.
This is why you play the games.
Here is the preface to her match against Alize as reported by usopen.org, “While the most celebrated mother at the US Open, six-time champion Serena Williams was winning in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday, the most astonishing, feel good ‘mom’ story of the tournament—that of Tsvetana Pironkova—kept growing.
Playing in the shadow of Arthur Ashe Stadium on Court 5 on a sun-splashed afternoon, the 32-year-old Bulgarian and mother of two-year-old son Alexander continued on her amazing comeback journey with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Donna Vekic for a spot in the fourth round.”
Everyone is feeling good about her story, except Alize who had her opportunities but lost to Tsvetana.
The WTA shared, “Unranked Tsvetana Pironkova continued her surprise US Open run with a dramatic upset over Alize Cornet, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 to reach her first quarterfinal in Flushing Meadows.”
It was a back and forth affair. Both players had chances to solidify and runaway with the match but couldn’t.
After watching Serena fight off and barely survive the incredibly fierce Maria Sakkari, what we noticed in their match in comparison to Alize’s was the difference in power.
It was vast.
In a cerebral hitting affair, graced with well-placed and coordinated shots, Tsvetana out smarted and out lasted Alize.
Will that approach hold up against a power game?
Given Tsvetana’s incredibly magical run, it appears we are about to find out.
