April 10, 2020,
If only she had known.
An associate in our circle we’ll name Paula once volunteered at two different hospitals in the Sacramento, California area for over two years at each facility.
While working there, never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that in the future, workers at the hospitals would be the first line of defense to essentially prevent a nation from collapsing.
When she was there, at both places, they were stable environments that took care of the ailing.
Now some of those very same people could be on the verge of or have already died due to being infected by the Coronavirus.
No matter how much you look into the future, it is impossible to see it with precision.
Speaking about the current plight of hospital workers, the global news leader CNN reports, “A Detroit hospital has been so overwhelmed by the influx of Covid-19 patients that at least 2 people have died in its emergency room hallways before help can arrive, health care workers there told CNN.
Conditions are so drastic at Sinai-Grace that on Sunday night, all of the emergency room’s night shift nursing staff –seven in total — staged a sit-in, where they refused to work and demanded that more nurses be sent in to help.”
It sounds like they are very overwhelmed.
Kaiser Hospitals of Northern California add, “As the U.S. battles to limit the spread of the highly contagious new coronavirus, the number of health care workers ordered to self-quarantine because of potential exposure to an infected patient is rising at an exponential pace. In Vacaville, California, alone, one case — the first documented instance of community transmission in the U.S. — left more than 200 hospital workers under quarantine and unable to work for weeks.”
We now have ordinary people being asked to perform extraordinary duties that are placing their very lives at risk.
This truly is a war against an unseen enemy.
The United States Center For Disease Control advises, “Healthcare facilities and clinicians should prioritize urgent and emergency visits and procedures now. These actions can preserve staff personal protective equipment (PPE) and patient care supplies; ensure staff and patient safety; and expand available hospital capacity:
- Delay all elective ambulatory provider visits
- Reschedule elective and non-urgent admissions
- Delay inpatient and outpatient elective surgical and procedural cases
- Postpone routine dental and eye care visit.”
Much needed help is on the way. Much needed thanks is in order for Front Line Service Providers.
