January 14, 2025,
The big names and huge matches are starting to play out early. Very early. Like the first round.
Coco Gauff against Sofia Kenin. An American rematch and showdown.
Their fortunes have changed as they met here at the Aussie Open before. It as 2020, when Sofia would go on to win the Australian Open and defeated Coco along the way in 3 sets, winning the last set 6-0. This time Coco steadily defeated Sofia in 2 sets.
She has a higher ranking. No real surprise there.
Coco has a career-high WTA rankings of world No. 2 in singles and of world No. 1 in doubles. She has won nine WTA Tour singles titles, including the 2023 US Open and 2024 WTA Finals, and nine doubles titles, including the 2024 French Open.
Extremely impressive. There’s more.
Coco made her WTA Tour debut in March of 2019 at the Miami Open at the age of 15. She received a wildcard into the qualifying draw at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, where she became the youngest player in the tournament’s history to qualify for the main draw.
Amazing.
In 2023, Coco won her first WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open and her first Major singles title at the US Open.
For some time, many thought Coco could not win the big one as she often faded in the thirds set against top players. Given her rise in the rankings and winning a Grand Slam, no one would think that now.
Her challenger Sofia Kenin has a career-high ranking of world No. 4 by the WTA, achieved on March 9, 2020, and a doubles ranking of No. 26 which she reached on August 12, 2024. She was the 2020 WTA Player of the Year, an award she earned by winning the 2020 Australian Open and finishing runner-up at the 2020 French Open.
Ms. Kenin has won five singles and four doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including the 2019 China Open and 2024 Miami Open at the WTA 1000-level both with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
As you can see, the 2025 Australian Open is heating up in the first round pitting super stars against one another and this match proves it.
