September 18, 2022,
It is finally complete.
The 2022 US Open is over.
We would say finally over but it didn’t feel that way.
It was over before we knew it. Another year has come and gone.
The most exciting story was Serena William’s last participation at the Open.
The first week was brimming with excitement and once Serena was ousted, the second week became more ordinary but necessary.
Iga Swiatek, the world’s number one, did follow through and win it all.
Sometimes, an intriguing but quieter story was who was not there or who exited early.
What in the world has happened to Sofia Kenin?
Sofia, age 23, is an American professional tennis player.
She has a career-high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of No. 4 in the world, which she achieved on March 9th 2020.
Remember this?
She was the 2020 WTA Player of the Year, an award she earned by winning the 2020 Australian Open and finishing runner-up at the 2020 French Open. Ms. Kenin has won five WTA singles titles and won two WTA doubles titles, including the 2019 China Open at the Premier Mandatory level with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
With her title at the 2020 Australian Open, Sofia became the youngest American to win a Grand Slam women’s singles title since Serena Williams in 1999. At the end of the season, she followed up her 2019 WTA Most Improved Player of the Year award by being named the 2020 WTA Player of the Year.
Having said all of that, guess what?
Her current ranking is 337.
Hard to believe.
She parted ways with her father as her coach and sustained numerous injuries.
This is a reminder to us how tough the women’s tour is.
One day you’re up and soon you can be out. Of the top 100 that is.
Then there is Amanda Anisimova.
Amanda is a Russian-American professional tennis player.
She has a career-high WTA ranking of No. 21 in the world, and has been ranked in the top 100 since shortly after turning 17 years old.
Ms. Anisimova has won two WTA Tour titles and reached three WTA finals in total.
Her impressive results in 2022 was competing into the fourth round of the Australian Open and surging into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
At this year’s US Open, she was knocked out in the first round by Kazakhstani’s Yulia Putintseva.
How fortunes change.
The former Canadian super star Eugenie Bouchard, once ranked number 5 in the world in October of 2014, is now ranked 902.
According to the press, Eugenie spent a lot more time partying than practicing and focusing on her tennis when it really mattered. This year, she couldn’t make it through the qualifiers to get into the 2022 Open.
No wild cards given to her.
She had her time and appears to have squandered it.
So, now it is Iga’s time.
We sense she will make the most of it.
