Forests have long been mystical, magical and magnificent places of lore in the human experience. So many of our important, ancient fairytales like Little Red Riding Hood, Bambi, Hansel and Gretel and many others take place deep in the forest.
Every time I have some moment on seashore, or in the mountains, or sometimes in a quiet forest, I think this is why the environment has to be preserved.……Bill Bradley
The beautiful, young fresh faced blonde DWW novice competitor Silvia had a face and name right out of the fairy tale forest.
The name Silvia in American and Latin means from the forest. Our friendly naming site sheknows.com sheds more light through the forest canopy.
“People with this name have a deep inner desire to use their abilities in leadership, and to have personal independence. They would rather focus on large, important issues, and delegate the details. They are excellent at analyzing, understanding, and learning. They tend to be mystics, philosophers, scholars, and teachers.
Because they live so much in the mind, they tend to be quiet and introspective, and are usually introverts. When presented with issues, they will see the larger picture. Their solitary thoughtfulness and analysis of people and world events may make them seem aloof, and sometimes even melancholy.”
I loved watching Silvia’s matches which were filled with youthful energy and passion but I knew there was so much more to our Danube darling.
Silvia was unusual in that virtually all of her matches took place at events. Many of the DWW girls wrestled on the dark blue mats in private.
Though she wrestled a short time, Silvia clearly had her fans. Here are a few of the reviews.
“The competition DWW offered was provided by two pretty teenagers who started recently, in Silvia and Orsi. Each girl on this video is fighting from within a team of supporters, in front of whom she wants to win.”
She is admired by another reviewer as well. “Featuring novices and some one-sided wrestling, fans of fresh faces, very long pins and domination will find much to enjoy here. Silvia N. and Monika T. are two newcomers who try their best and show ambition in every move. They have a future but currently are untrained but beautiful “girls next door”. But they are not as easy to beat as it looks. First, Silvia gives experienced Lenka a tough match and you must look twice to tell these cute blondes apart.”
When Silvia fought Monika and Delores where she seemed to be the main attraction, a third reviewer expressed his excitement. “Many fans like watching not just good, strong wrestlers but novices going at it for the first time. Here they are! Three gorgeous, slim, fit teenagers, who don’t know each other, taking each other on in the first wrestling matches of their lives. As different as they are, they have one thing in common – all want to find out what it’s like to fight another girl and try to win.”
Silvia was very young and beautiful at the time she wrestled, just like she was right out of a forest fairytale. FCI has traveled with you to many countries and fascinating places around the world so now it seems time to return home. Return to one of mankind’s oldest most loved and feared habitats.
You can’t stay in your corner of the forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.……A. A. Milne
It’s time to travel into the forest.
The informative site news.mongabay.com story tells, “There is almost nothing left of Europe’s famed forests, those that provided for human communities for millennia and gave life to the world’s most famous fairytales. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t forests in Europe, far from it: approximately 35 percent of the EU is currently covered in forest. But almost all of this is either plantations or secondary growth, having been logged sometime in the last few hundred years and in many areas logged in the last couple decades. This is why, according to author and guide, Lukasz Mazurek, the Bialowieza Forest is so special: “You really feel here like you travelled back in time some hundreds or thousands of years.”
Moreover, most of Europe’s forests are now bereft of their megafauna: bears, wolves, red deer, moose have all seen their ranges squeezed considerably in the last few centuries. Other species have vanished altogether: it’s hard to imagine that Europe’s forests used to include lions, hyenas, elephants, rhinos, and giant cattle known as aurochs, which only went extinct in the 17th Century.”
Fortunately there is at least one country that has made a strong effort to preserve their beautiful forests and it happens to be where many of our DWW tales have taken place.
The park like country of Austria.
It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.….Robert Louis Stevenson
A spectacular 41 percent of Upper Austria is presently covered by forests according to fao.org run by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture. They now help us see the forest and the trees.
“About half of Austria’s area is covered by forest land. Therefore, the right use of sustainable management can only be done by a natural oriented forestry. This guarantees a continuous supply of timber, a steady flow of income for the owners – the employers as well as for the employees of the forest industry – and it is also the basis of settlement and agricultural utilization of our environment. Natural oriented forest management can only be a compromise between ecological conditions and economic objectives. The conflicting interests of economy and ecology compel foresters to be flexible since they must deal with public interests more and more.
A basic principle of Austrian forestry is the principle of sustained yields to preserve the forests, their functions and social benefits. This does not necessarily mean to merely copy the regularities of nature but to think in economic terms as well. The strategy of a natural oriented forestry is to combine economy and nature. A well-planned forest policy could be applied to the high standards of environmental policy. However without the natural protective effects of forests – especially regarding avalanches, torrents and mud-rock flows – our Alpine region could not be settled and inhabited.”
One more fascinating site ghostwoods.com guides us to the spiritual side of the forest in a very revealing way.
“For centuries, forest has marked the edges of mankind’s domain. Across Europe, North America and the Far East, humanity has had to carve living space out of the great temperate forests. Much of the world has a long history of being in close proximity to these green wildernesses. Forests are strongly symbolic of the cycle of life, from the growth of spring and the flowering of summer to the decay of autumn and the barren emptiness of winter.
Frequently trackless, inhabited by potentially dangerous animals, forests are places of danger and trickery.
Where the jungle is an unsubtle, all-out attack, forests are subtler – a familiar presence, outwardly calm and tranquil, but firmly marking the boundary of man’s authority. Where the desert is stark and revelatory, forests seemingly take joy in shading and dappling, defeating the sun, blurring and softening everything into uncertainty.
Accordingly, there is a long association between forestry and the unconscious mind, which is often seen as feminine – forests are home to fairy tales, legendary bandits and monsters, witches and wizards, and all manner of magical presences. The trees themselves are reminiscent of temple columns, but what terrifying god or goddess could need such a vast church? Children’s stories are full of forest dangers from the Big Bad Wolf on downwards, a symbolic journey into the frightening subconscious.”
I think I’m ready to go home, enjoy and revisit some fairytales shaded with their symbolism.
I certainly enjoyed revisiting Silvia’s memory. Very active as an athlete, Silvia enjoyed squash, tennis and swimming. Her favorite fighting style was to utilize school girl pins, grapevine pins and flat body to body press pins. She had very strong legs and was quick, flexible and very fit.
In our dreams and fantasies the forest provides us with a balance of pleasure and pain; fear and wonder and dreams of meeting fresh faced beautiful blonde girls like Silvia where we journey hand and hand together into a mystical densely tree covered world of magical new beginnings with no end in sight.
