Sink or swim, make it, break it (the habit), or be broken. Completely.
Often the world of the Independent film is a jaggedly framed mirror that we can safely look at from a distance but still see our reflection in the side corner.
The powerful little Aussie Indie film entitled Little Fish starring the stellar actress Cate Blanchett is a tale as murky as some of the waters off of its shores where Ms. Blanchett’s character Tracy Heart, a 32-year-old recovering drug addict who manages a video store in Cabramatta, a Sydney suburb nicknamed Little Saigon for its large Vietnamese population and known as the heroin capital of Australia, may suck her back into the life.
Penetrating into the fascinating world of the shapely model in general and Bianca Mitsuko Davies life in particular, yes in life we are all unique but her story especially during her teen years is eerily similar to most other shapely models that we have researched and written about.
It’s like a step program to potential self-destruction.
First there are the innocent but unkind words from family and relatives about how they are a little pudgy or slightly overweight…ha, ha, ha.
Step two is where their school mates pick up on the theme and mercilessly tease them into low self-esteem oblivion.
Then follows the self-destruction of eating disorders and all that goes with that including the potential for very real and permanent health damage.
Some sink. Some swim.
If you have a positive attitude and constantly strive to give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater challenges.….Pat Riley
Like Kate Blanchet’s character in Little Fish swimming laps in the pool, Bianca is swimming just fine at the moment but it wasn’t always that way.
In her honest accounting to plusmodelstoday.com she speaks to her past.
“My name is Bianca Mitsuko Davies. Born July 21 1989 in San Diego, CA. I am a mixed with Latina/African-American/Japanese. Growing up I played basketball, which fulfilled most of my time, yet there was something missing. I was the “chubby” sibling of my sisters and I wasn’t happy with my body.
When I was in high school I began the journey of my “eating disorder”. I was told by my assistant high school basketball coach every day that I was fat, this began daily routines of binging and purges, skipping meals, and constantly in the mirror searching for flaws.
It wasn’t until I graduated college that I met plus size model Katie Halchishick, who told me it was okay to be a size 12, I’ve always wanted to be a model but thought I was too “BIG” , finding a healthy balance in my life has been my greatest success. Now I am proud to say I am a plus size model, a curvy woman, and I’m ready to take this industry by storm.
I encourage girls everywhere to embrace their curves, I’m in love with mine. I am a part of a great movement called “Healthy is the New Skinny” founded by Model Katie Halchishick and photographer Bradford Wilcox, which promotes healthy body images for women across the world. I look forward to being a positive image in the plus modeling industry and an advocate for curves.”
Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.……..Booker T. Washington
Bianca has overcome a challenging childhood to model for Torrid, Lane Bryant, Nordstrom’s, Bonton, Kohl’s, as well as work as a part-time administrator for an adult day care program in California.
Very good. She’s clearly swimming upstream.
Healthy is the new Skinny is a company dedicated to helping girls find their wings. HNS was created by husband and wife team Katie and Bradford Willcox.
At their blog healthyisthenewskinny.com they follow up on and embrace their unified theme with Bianca. “We are so happy to work with Manhattan Beachwear to showcase some of the beautiful swimwear lines that they manufacture for all different body types and sizes! This rash guard top is from Hobie Girl Swim. We love this colors and stretchy fabric.
At Healthy is the new Skinny we are focused on showing all types of beauty! We feel authentic joy and happiness is what makes a woman beautiful. When you are on the beach in a swimsuit it is easy to fall victim to negative self-talk and we want girls and women to understand that everyone is deserving of a good life. No matter what size you are, you are worthy of happiness and joy!”
Themes about swimming and the beach seem to be everywhere. The ending of Kate’s Blanchett’s film takes place where else?
The beach.
Where are some great places near San Diego for Bianca to show off some of her swim wear collaboration? Many. The beach that we always loved and possesses its own character is none other than Del Mar Beach.
Completely adorned in swimwear the informative site delmar.ca.us guides us to the sand and grand. “The beach in Del Mar is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable in San Diego. The two plus miles of sandy beach offers a great place to relax, walk, or run. Two coastal parks, Powerhouse and Seagrove Parks, are located just above the 15th Street surf break; providing a great spot to picnic with friends and family. The Powerhouse Park also features a barefoot friendly, dog free “tot lot,” where kids can play on swings, slides, and climb.”
That sounds like fun.
Wearing a nice pair of sandals dreamdelmar.com agrees on Del Mar for good reason. “Ranked #4 in Time Magazine’s “100 Greatest Beaches in the World,” Del Mar’s 15th Street Beach is quintessential small town San Diego, California. The expansive Del Mar Beaches are situated along coastal bluffs and provide a stunning backdrop for vacationing families, local surfers, swimmers and sun bathers.”
Hey, if we go, maybe we can get a glimpse of Bianca?
To me, obstacles in life build character. You have to be able to overcome adversity in order to succeed and appreciate the simple things life has to offer… that’s where most of my inspiration for writing and singing comes from.…..Elliott Yamin
Bianca has certainly come a long way from her days of being ridiculed.
She’s wonderfully curved, face gorgeous, bright, intelligent and strong. More important she is a wonderful ambassador for young girls that all roses don’t have to be red to be beautiful.
Internationally famous, brimming with confidence, successfully swimming upstream for Bianca is now the norm.
